Aeon was seated at his desk by the front of the class as his third years filed in, a large glass tank containing multiple frogs taking up most of the desks surface space. The books and writing equipment he usually kept on it had been cleared away, shoved carelessly into a drawer to make room for the amphibians terrarium. Once everyone had taken their seats, he rose from his so the could all see him more clearly, rather than through glass, and began. "Hey guys! So, today we'll be starting on Animate to Animate Transfiguration for the first time. I hope you're all excited. We've completed all of the easy stuff and now we're on to the intermediate areas. As you can see, we will be beginning practice using some frogs. I ordered too many for the Magical Menagerie so I don't have the space for them until they're given homes. In the mean time, we can use them for your studies." The professor stated, always happy to mention his store and urge people to buy from it. Everyone should have a pet. "Anyway, you'll all be learning how to transfigure these guys into grasshoppers. Some of you might be a little reluctant because you claim to be against animal mistreatment or whatever else, but transfiguration is not a painful process to undergo, even if its muddled up. I don't advise doing that though, its still uncomfortable and awkward to be stuck between species. Here's an example of what a mistake might look like." The man tapped his wand in the air, projecting an image of what appeared to be both a frog and a rabbit. ![]() "But again, being transfigured into a state like this does not actually cause pain, it's just awkward. Moving on. This type of transfiguration is referred to as Cross-Species Transfiguration, so keep that in mind. Naturally it requires a lot more concentration and visualization when performing this type of magic, so make sure you concentrate." He stopped speaking, making sure that everyone was paying close attention to what he was saying. He didn't want to have to deal with any mistakes. Once he was sure that he had everyone's full attention, he stepped back over to the terrarium and lifted out a large brown frog and set it on the little free space he had on his desk. It hopped from end to end, but seemed unsure as to whether or not it should try jump off of it. "So, first of all we'll start with the correct wand movement. With this spell, you simply need to make sure you have a straight arm and point your wand directly at the frog. Like so." He stated, extending his arm toward the amphibian so that his wand hovered just inches away from it. "Be aware they'll be hopping about, so just adjust accordingly. Once you're sure you've got it...Locusta!" Summers incanted, shifting the frog into a small, bright green grasshopper. It hopped towards the floor and he quickly motioned with his wand again, freezing it in mid-air. "Whoops. Just be sure to keep track of your froghopper, whichever species it is at the time. Avoid creating an actual frog/grasshopper hybrid though. I don't want to see anyone leave their seats for the entire duration of this lesson. Can't have you stepping on the animals you're working with. The incantation if you missed it is Locusta, which I'll write up on the board behind me. As soon as you're ready, come grab a frog. We have about thirty minutes, let's go!" Transfiguration,3,2 |

The term was well underway, and already Mervyn had homework coming up to his eyeballs. It was all these stupid classes he'd agreed to take. His only consolation was that Leda was struggling alongside him. Sharing every class with her was a lot of fun it was one of the perks of being a third year, and being able to pick his own electives. He sat down beside her, trying not to chat too much. He didn't want to miss the lesson introduction, after all. The sight of the frog/rabbit hybrid made him grimace slightly. Even if it wasn't painful, it sure looked uncomfortable, and suddenly Mervyn was afraid of messing up. If that wasn't bad enough, they also had to hold frogs. Real, slimy frogs. Mervyn held his at arm's length as he carried it back to his desk. He'd picked a particularly lively one of course and had some trouble getting it to sit still long enough to concentrate. Eventually, after accidentally casting the spell on his book several times, he managed to hit the frog. In its grasshopper form it was no less lively, and immediately launched itself onto the desk of the person sitting next to him. He didn't bother trying to rescue it: his work here was done - and besides, Professor Summers had said that nobody could leave their seats. |

It was only week two but Leda felt like she'd been taking these subjects for years. How was she meant to come up with fun ideas to enjoy herself and help others out when she was taking as many classes as she was? At least she was able to spend more time with Mervyn though, and she was glad that their disagreement from a few weeks ago had been settled. It wasn't the same when he wasn't around and even though she knew that they shared similar opinions on the current workload, she was quietly grateful for the company. Watching as they'd be transfiguring a few creatures, Leda wondered why they hadn't just done that to Mr Prickles. If they could have turned him into a cat or a rat or something that would blend in the rest of the school creatures, maybe they could have kept him on the grounds longer. The Slytherin sniggered as Mervyn attempted to get his frog to hold still, having no issues herself in taking hold of one of the creatures, although she was unaware that the frogs may not have wanted to be carried upside down by the legs, it felt like the easier option. Once she dropped it onto her desk, she whipped out her wand to transform it into grasshopper, managing it before it jumped straight off the table. The Slytherin stood up quickly, although upon recalling that they weren't allowed to move, checked her seat nervously before sitting back down, leaning back, and sticking her feet up on the table as she realised there was nothing more to it. Easy. |

Gabriella enjoyed being at Hogwarts, and was glad lessons were starting in earnest now. Attending lessons and doing homework made her feel productive, which she was happy about. She wrote her dad a few daysa go, though she neglected to mention her talk with Frankie and the letter from her mother. She still couldn't help feeling like any interest in a relationship with her mother would be seen as a betrayal by her father. Though she also wondered if he wouldn't want to hear from Frankie. Maybe she should ask him that in her next letter. Family problems were pushed tot he back of her mind the moment she walked into the Transfiguration classroom. The Hufflepuff was eager to see what they would be learning today, though a part of her still hoped it would simply be anther lecture. As she took her seat, she listened to the professor and learnt they would actually be attempting a transfiguration spell today as well. She felt a little nervous, but it wasn't too bad. Though she wished they could use something less slimy than a frog for this. Gabriella took a few notes on what the professor was saying, writing down that an animal could be stuck between two species. Then she focused on the spell itself. She watched as the professor showed them how to do it, though she leaned back in her chair when the grasshopper hopped off the desk. She wasn't sure if she liked grasshoppers any better than frogs. Once Professor Summers finished talking, Gabriella headed to the front of the class to get a frog. She returned to her seat and tried her best to make the spell work. It didn't turn into a grasshopper on the first try, or the second. But by the third, she had managed it. Gabriella was relieved she had managed to avoid creating a hybrid, though she also wasn't sure what to do with this grasshopper now. Unlike the professor, she didn't know how to make it freeze in midair. The Hufflepuff trapped the insect on her desk by placing her books around it like a wall. That way, it wouldn't be able to escape before the professor could see her work. |

Len was ready for the second lessons of period one. She was still energized from her holiday and there wasn't a lot of homework. Everything was going okay and Len felt safer around the Gryffindor girls. Mitchell had taken the news of her being a goblin very well and that put Len in a very good mood. Len walked down the stairs to get to the classroom. Len sat down and waited for the class to start. Transfiguration wasn't easy and Len knew the subject didn't knew the word easy. They were probably learning another spell and Len was ready. The Professor started talking about how you could splice animals and that if you didn't focus enough you could turn them into mutants. It scared Len, but she was sure she could do this. She wrote it down so she knew not what to do. Len recited the spell with the rest of class and then Len was ready. She walked to the front of the class and grabbed a frog. It was rather slimy, but Len didn't mind. She liked animals including toads and frogs. ''Locusta'' Len said while focusing on a grasshopper. It had worked and Len didn't create a hybrid. It looked like a regular grasshopper with all its skills. Len tried to catch it with a make shift prison of books and hoped it wouldn't escape before the Professor could see her handy work. When the Professor came to get the grasshopper Len packed her items and left the classroom. |

The lecture last week had been pretty boring, but Charlie was excited at the thought of actually getting into the Transfiguration work they would be doing this year. Changing something into something else would pretty much always be cool, no questions. She took her usual seat at the back of the classroom and got her wand out hopefully, setting it on the desk next to her ink. Hopefully there wouldn't be too many notes to take today. To her delight Charlie wasn't disappointed, and she listened eagerly as the Professor showed them what they would be doing today. She couldn't hold back a quiet giggle at the sight of the hybrid creature. It was weirdly cute, in a gross way. Once it was time she got up and went to the front to get a frog, grinning slightly as she picked up the little creature. The frog was pretty cute, she couldn't help but think as she returned to her desk. It would be a shame to turn it into a bug. She set it on her desk, making sure it wasn't going to hop away, and picked up her wand carefully. Taking a deep breath, Charlie made sure she was doing the wand movement right, pronouncing the spell carefully. "Locusta." To her pleasant surprise, the frog shifted forms at once, leaving in its place a locust bearing the same colours as the frog beforehand. |

The ravenclaw was thoroughly enjoying the semester so far. He was doing a lot to ensure that he was actually taking part in things, and he had put together, what he believed to be a rather good costume for the halloween celebrations. It wasnt odd for him to take part in that, hed done it several times before but he felt this costume was less lazy than the others, hed gone out of his way for it. However, more importantly were the exams that he had upcoming, the classes he was doing currently, and the fact he had to be the best in all of those classes before he could start adding on other things, even if they were little silly events the school held. He was enjoying the semester, the classes and the lesson were good and a little more challenging, the spells a little more complex and just allowing Simon to do and be better than the years prior. Happily the teen was getting ready for the day. Gathering what he would need for the day and figuring out what bits and pieces he needed too. He got ready with plenty of time and left the dorm for the first class of the day. Simon walked into the transfiguration classroom, looking forward to what they would be be doing, since he had enjoyed the last lecture. He took out his notes and his books and was ready to continue writing about it. However, this turned out to be unnecessary since they would actually be doing a spell. Though the spell came after a lecture. It was a shorter lecture than the one in the previous class. He didn't have to concentrate nearly as hard to get it. The boy made sure to get all the little pieces written so that when they started doing the moving and saying the incantation he wasn't behind. He repeated words with others, and did the motion too, pleased when the lesson was finally handed over to them and they were allowed to just get started. He took the frog and after imagining it become a grasshopper, did the motion with his wand and said, "Locusta," it did transform, and it took several more attempts before he was able to get the spell to work. He had to work at spells, though whenever he got one wrong he immediately wanted to give up. This could not be the case when he was learning spells. The lesson was wrapped up and Simon was able to leave the room. |

Patrick had enjoyed his first week back at Hogwarts. The boy had joined the quidditch team again and was excited for the games that he could hopefully play in, wanting to try his best, even as an alternate on the team. He didn't care what his family thought of him playing quidditch anymore and was just happy to be enjoying himself at Hogwarts and getting a break from his studies every now and then. A distraction was always good as Patrick did not like to stress himself out too much. He was just happy to be representing his house whilst having good fun at the same time. The boy had a smile on his face as he packed his bag with everything that he needed for the day before heading out of his dormitory and heading to his classes. Patrick entered the Transfiguration classroom and proceeded to head towards a seat near the back to isolate himself from everyone once again. He felt that he learnt more when he wasn't around others and was looking forward to what they would be learning that lesson. He listened as the professor began the lesson by telling them that they would finally be heading onto the more challenging stuff. The professor demonstrated turning a frog into a rabbit and he made it look quite easy, despite the fact the frog tried to run away at first. Wondering if he could actually do it, Patrick made his way to the front of the room to collect a frog and placed it on his desk, taking out his wand. "Locusta." he said, tapping his wand three times on the frog. But it seemed like the frog really didn't want to be transfigured. It leaped forward and Patrick quickly tried to grab hold of it without trying to hurt it. It took quite a few tries but eventually the frog had turned into a rabbit and Patrick was happy for this. He left the classroom exhausted but was nevertheless quite proud of his efforts. |

Frankie immediately grew more enthused about her Transfiguration lesson when she heard that they would be doing practical work and she sat up straighter at her desk to listen to the professor explain more about the type of transfiguration they would begin today. The first part was kind of boring, and Frankie slumped back into her seat as the lecture stayed more theoretical. Halfway through she wondered if she should have been taking notes and so half-heartedly scratched 'concentrate' and 'visualize' down on her parchment, with both words underlined. Nothing else made it to the sheet, however; Frankie only became enthused again once Professor Summers began showing them the wand movement they should be using. It was simple, and the incantation wasn't much harder, which left Frankie feeling ready to begin working with a frog straight away. She was one of the first to head up and grab one from the terranium, not particularly caring what kind of frog she grabbed, and was soon back at her desk to begin practising. She had managed not to pick one that was too keen on jumping, which made aiming her wand at the animal easier. "Locusta", Frankie said, making sure to concentrate and visualise the transformation she wanted to occur. Her mind's image of a grasshopper was a bit hazy, but she persisted in her attempts until she managed to transform the frog into something that definitely looked like an insect. She hoped that wouldn't be considered a mistake like the one Professor Summers had shown them on the board. She didn't really want to cause the creature any unnecessary discomfort for the sake of learning a spell. It looked okay though, Frankie thought as she bent over the insect with the intent to examine it more closely. But as soon as she moved, the grasshopper leaped away from her and off the desk. "Shoot!" Frankie hissed, and leaned sideways out into the aisle to try and see where the insect had gone. They weren't supposed to move from their desks, so how was she supposed to catch it back? The summoning charm would definitely work, but how would she bring back only her grasshopper, and not all the other ones in the class? Frankie didn't want to bother the professor just yet, so instead spent the rest of the lesson trying to devise a single-grasshopper-specific descriptor to attach to a summoning charm. She wished she better remembered what the frog had looked like before she transfigured it. In the end, the lesson came to a finish and she had to enlist the professor's help after all. At least she had managed to correctly transfigure it, Frankie decided as she left the classroom. At least, she hoped she had. |
