Professor Summers greeted his students from behind his desk as they entered the classroom, gesturing for them to take their seats. "Good morning, and welcome back to Transfiguration. For those new students who have transferred over, or the old ones who are simply just forgetful, I'm Professor Aeon Summers. Now, let's get started. As I'm sure you all remember, first year was centered around Inanimate to Inanimate Transfiguration. We're completely done with that branch. This year we're moving on to something more complex; Animate to Inanimate. It's a lot more challenging than what we've done so far, but I'm confident that most of you won't have too much trouble." The wizard glanced around the classroom, happy that the majority of them had seemed somewhat capable from the previous year. There were a few who were rather disappointing, but he couldn't have a perfect class. "If you all remember back to first year, we went over Transfiguration terms and their meanings in your first lesson. If you can't properly recall, Animate to Inanimate transfigures something living into something that is not. For example, a hamster into a rock, or a flamingo into a lawn flamingo. Of course, as always Transfigurations are permanent, and transfiguring an animal into something else indefinitely is usually against Ministry regulations, with some exemptions. You will be learning how to perform Animate to Inanimate Transfigurations, but it is for educational purposes, and all of them will be reversed. Anyway, as with Inanimate to Inanimate Transfiguration, you're still using the three-tap method, so nothing changes there." He stopped to make sure everyone was following along, continuing when he was sure at least most eyes were on him. "A few people have some difficulty understanding how Animate to Inanimate Transfiguration works. We don't take the life away from the animals, it's more like we suspend it. They still have some small degree of awareness and thought, but are incapable of movement, speech, seeing or hearing. If you were to turn a person into a couch, they essentially are a couch for that period of time. They're very barely aware if you were to sit on them, yet aren't able to do anything but provide you with comfort." Summers got to his feet and walked around to the front of his desk as he spoke, suddenly feeling uncomfortable to be sitting in his own seat. The reality of it was that anything had the potential of being something else. A book thrown into a fire may very well have once been a human, transfigured into an object as a punishment or prank. Which brought him to his next step of the lesson. "There was once a time where Transfiguration was used to punish dark wizards and other rule-breakers. Before Azkaban, wizarding authorities had few places to hold wizards and witches. As such, they resorted to changing them into a stationary figure. Statues. Their bodies were turned to stone and became their prisons." His face was far more serious as he spoke. There were depictions of this punishment in old books around the library, and it wasn't pleasant. "Wizardkind has always had questionable methods of punishment. This method has not been used in a long time, but it wasn't that long ago that we still had Dementors roaming Azkaban. Thankfully now we have a less cruel system in place. Which brings us to your homework." Summers waved his wand toward the board, the chalk quickly scrawling their task onto its surface before they were dismissed. Homework Essay: In your opinion, does transfiguration make a good punishment? Why or why not? (Whatever length you want it to be, just show your characters opinion) Transfiguration,2,1 |

Jacob stepped into the Transfiguration classroom, glad to see Professor Summers. He quickly changed his mind about how glad he was when the professor dove right into a lesson. He'd forgotten how lecture based the class was. Hoping the lecture portion would be short lived, Jacob slouched in his seat as he listened. Animate to Inanimate. That was interestinf, but not enough for him to sit up straight. Jacob remained in his position. Thinking about what the professor was saying, the Gryffindor found that he did not like thinking about how anything would feel if they were transfigured. It made him not want to do it. His dad had once told him about Transfiguration as punishment just like Professor Summers was explaining, about people who were turned into statues, and from then on, he'd always looked at statues suspiciously, especially the ones at the Ministry. He knew his dad would never do that but it didn't mean the old Ministers wouldn't have. He was glad thag his father was part of the 'less cruel system his professor was explaining. Copying down the homework, Jacob wondered if he'd have time to ask his dad some questions for it. |

Sapphire made her way into class. She was a bit eager for the lesson, but much less eager because she knew it was a class shared with Gryffindor. She spotted Jacob and slid in behind him. Maybe being close to her other friends would make Onyx behave himself. Of course, it wasn't long before her brother showed up and slid in next to her. She focused on class, listening in interest as Professor Summers was describing Animate to Inanimate Transfigurations. It was an interesting theory, she supposed. She thought as a punishment it was extreme. Why not just kill them? It's not like they were going to have time to reflect as a statue and have a change of heart. Isn't that what jail was for? Taking the dangerous away from society so they could correct themselves without hurting others? She thought the homework assignment was an interesting concept and decided to do more research at the library before turning it in. Once class was over she gathered her things and headed that way. With any luck she'd be able to snag her favorite Ravenclaw to help her study for it. |

Diana was pleased by how well known the Holland name was becoming around the school. Not only was her mother now one of minister candidates, and her older cousin Grace had just started as a professor at Hogwarts. Sometimes she wished she could get away from it all, but she did like the relative fame associated with her name. It was with more than a slight air of superiorty that she made her way around the school now, pleased with herself. Transfiguration wasn't the best class, but it wasn't the worst either. Sometimes they got to do interesting spells, though long and boring lectures seemed more common. Diana rolled her eyes when she saw Sapphire and Onyx sit together. She supposed she would have to get used to that. Finding Domi, she sat next to her other friend and gave her a small smile before looking at the front. The professor told them they would be learning a more complex form of transfiguration, Animate to Inanimate transfiguration. She hoped that didn't mean they had to work with a lot of animals like insects. Diana took a few notes on the lesson, writing down a few of the examples. She also wrote down they would use the three-tap-method, even if that seemed obvious. She was slowly losing focus, wondering how anyone got through a lecture like this without falling asleep. She listened as the professor explained they weren't taking life away from animals, but figured she would remember that without noting it down. The talk about the ministry and old forms of punishment made her think of her mother's election. She would be against anything like that, of course. The lesson was over after that, and Diana felt relieved. She gathered her things and left the classroom with a group of Slytherins. |

Anastasie quite enjoyed her holidays as it was a time away from many people that annoyed her, but now that she was back at Hogwarts, she tried her best to be conservative, not speaking unless spoken to, and tried her best to keep her opinion to herself. She knew it was too late now to try to keep making friends and so didn't bother talking to people and looked down as she walked through the corridors, not really knowing what else to do. She was glad when classes began as that meant a distraction from her thoughts, and so happily packed everything she needed for the day into her backpack, hoping that this year they would be learning useful and interesting things. As Ana entered the classroom and took her usual seat at the front of the room, she was glad that they would be sitting and listening to a lecture for their first lesson. Moving onto animate to inanimate transfiguration would be interesting and Ana was glad that the professor could trust the students enough to let them do such a thing, hoping this would really help her in the future. She listened as the professor told them how turning people into statues was used a form of punishment and she thought that was quite a good alternative to punishing people today. It surely saved space in cells and she wondered why it was stopped. At the end of the lesson the Slytherin packed everything away and headed out of the classroom to her next class. |

Gwen was happy to be back at school for a new year. She was no longer part of the youngest group and was happy to finally be moving onto bigger and better things. The girl had even tried out for quidditch, but to no avail, and even though the girl was quite disgruntled about that and began to hate the Gryffindor quidditch team for it, she tried her best to stay positive, whilst also giving the Gryffindor co-captains dirty looks whenever she saw them. The Gryffindor packed everything she needed into her backpack before heading out of the classroom, ready to take on anything her lessons had to offer. Gwen entered the Transfiguration classroom and made to sit at the back of the classroom, figuring it was a great way to isolate herself. She did not want to accidentally yell at anyone and so figured it was the best thing to do. She listened as the professor spoke, sighing at the fact that they had to sit through a long lecture. Luckily, they would be moving onto harder topics this year and this excited the girl. As the professor told them that they had to do some homework, Gwen pushed it to the back of her mind, hoping she would get around to doing it later. It was horrible to have to do homework during the first week back, but she knew that if she wanted to do harder things then lots of homework was definitely required. When dismissed, Gwen thanked the professor before packing her belongings away and heading out of the classroom. |

Sam was more than ready for the year ahead, she had organised everything and feeling refreshed and rested from the holidays, she couldn't wait to begin her second year at Hogwarts. Last year had gone really well and she wanted to keep impressing her father and teachers, with everything new she learned. Now that she knew Hogwarts a little better, it was her chance to improve her magical skills without having to worry where everything was. Sam liked to think she was a quick learner and had inherited it from her late mother. That, and her great time management. The Slytherin checked her timetable and smiled attentively as she saw that she had Transfiguration, so she packed all of her necessary books for the class and promptly arrived to her lesson. She doubted she would forget Professor Summers' creative introduction to the subject last year. She took a seat and laid everything out in front of her as the professor began, Sam having already suspected this would be a lecture. Most classes were like it, anyway, and the blonde loved lectures. It was the best way to learn, in her opinion. No one could convince her otherwise. She took notes, feeling as though time was passing too fast for her liking. She added the homework once it was given and when Professor Summers dismissed them she packed up and headed out of the classroom, not forgetting to thank the man on her way out. |

Mazikeen had spent a good while at home, rekindling old friendships. She hadn’t so much as left those people behind as much as contact had just been hard. The gryffindor girl was happy to be back, she was silent as others compared what they did, since her appeared mundane. The girl wanted to try and do better this year, make more friends, spend more time with those who were her friends, try new things, but she did also need to keep her grades up. Both her parents had been pleased with her grades and she knew she like that feeling when they were proud of her, and she did want to keep that going. She had to, so it meant between her action plan, she still had to go to classes, she still had to be working hard and doing all she could to pass her classes at a minimum. Speaking of which, the gryffindor finished brushing her hair and then gathering up her books and old notes, in case she’d need them. Maze made sure she had everything for the day before she left for class. She was eager to just get started and felt second year would just have to be better than first. Mazikeen had high hopes for what they would be doing in this transfiguration class. The professor was one of those that she had grown to get fairly frustrated by, bogging down lessons with his lectures that went on too long and giving them little time to do the spell. She sat down in the room and took out both her writing utensils and then also her wand, in an almost hopeful move that would make her more inclined to pay attention if she thought she might get an opportunity to cast a spell within the class. She was very wrong about this, as it became evident. It was the first class, so she should've expected a lecture, but it didn't make listening to the professor drone on and on about something that didn't particularly interest her any better. She took small notes, they weren't particularly good or accurate but she got the impression that it was nevertheless important. The gryffindor had no opinions on it, her mind shutting off, and just letting her hand do the writing until the professor finished up and unfortunately set them homework upon the subject that Mazikeens notes were fairly lacklustre in. She packed up her things and left the room, she'd get to the work eventually. |

Derek was very happy that school was back. He didn't particularly mind classes, and he knew his family had hoped for better things from him, but in Derek's mind he didn't need to start really working until he'd picked his electives since they helped decide his path for after school. The young slytherin didn't know what he wanted to do and had no clue what he might pick because he didn't know what he wanted to do. There wasn't anything yet that Derek wanted to do, and there weren't any subjects that called to him particularly clearly. He would just have to take a few and hope they were broad enough that they would help him do well after school, no matter what he decided to do. Perhaps he should talk to his head of house about that. However, there was still time before he'd pick his classes for the next year so he would do that closer to the time. Derek was just continuing to get ready for the classes he had that day, knowing he'd do a minimal amount of work in them before doing something more fun. But he'd go to them, and as soon as he was ready he left for it. Derek was far less excited for the transfiguration class as he was for his other classes that semester, owing almost entire down to the fact that he had a feeling there would be too many words spoken in the class and just not enough spells. He didn't mind too much but it dragged on. He still greeted the professor warmly before taking his seat. He took out his notes and his quill and looked to the professor where he was sure the man was about to start his long lecture. As it turned out her was right, but Derek who had heard a lot about old magical punishments couldn't help his keenness as the professor talked about the precursor to it. The ability to turn something living to something inanimate was a uniquely magical thing, especially since it could be done without killing anyone. The slytherin spent his time in that lesson writing down the interesting little bits of the lecture as it eventually got on to humans, and making sure that he was writing everything down as closely as he could so as to not make mistakes. Soon enough the lecture was brought to an end and Derek was able to easily pack up his things and leave the room. It had been a good lesson. |
