Mother of Two Girls | Astronomy Professor | HS Graduate Ravenclaw

[justify]Professor Harrington was looking forward to seeing her second years again, they were quite a nice bunch of students and already very professional in the classroom when compared to the first years. Letting them in she smiled as they began to take their seats, "Today, is the death of a star. Fascinating but also grim."

"So, how long a star lives depends on its mass. The bigger they are, the quicker they die. This might seem odd, but the more mass a star has, then the hotter it gets. The hotter it gets, the quicker it exhausts its fuel supply," Sarah said to her students taking a moment to pause. "Our nearest star, the Sun, will exhaust its supply of hydrogen fuel in around 4 billion years. Then the Sun's core will collapse under its own gravity. At the same time, its atmosphere will become unstable and start to expand. This will transform the Sun into a huge red giant star, we will look more into star types next lesson."

"This is not good news for the Earth. Closer planets like Mercury will be completely engulfed by the swelling Sun. Earth will be entirely vaporized and all life on our planet will end. But there's no reason for alarm – we have a few billion years to plan our escape!" Sarah said with a laugh, all of these students and herself would be long gone before the Sun started it's years of dieing. "Over the following billion years, the Sun will gradually die. As a star's core crashes inwards, it eventually becomes hot enough to ignite another of its constituent atoms, helium. Helium atoms fuse together to form carbon. When the helium supply runs out, the center collapses again and the atmosphere inflates. The Sun isn't massive enough to fully re-ignite its core for the third time. So it goes on expanding, shedding its atmosphere in a series of bursts." Professor Harrington told the class. "Now our Sun will turn into a white dwarf, most likely, as it is not large enough to turn into a supernova, which I shall describe further. When a star a few times larger than the Sun runs out of fuel, its end is far more spectacular. A massive shock wave radiates throughout the whole star, which heats up to around 1 billion°C. Then it explodes as a supernova. This flash is as bright as a whole galaxy and leaves behind a rapidly spinning neutron star."

"That is it for tonight guys, remember to stay safe and do the homework, and not to mention make sure you have enough notes."
Sarah concluded the class and departed from the classroom after the students all left. She thought it was a lot of information but she was sure her students could handle it all.

Homework:
-Roleplay the lesson and take some notes.
-Write a small essay about Supernova.

[justify]Simon was pretty happy with how the semester was going and he had particularly enjoyed the duelling. He knew that needed to work on his skills in it, but at the very least he had finally gotten the opportunity to try his hand at casting magic that he hadn’t been able to yet. In a way that was more challenging and was at it’s heart a competition, and boy did Simon love competition. The young ravenclaw had spent time practicing his spells and the wand movements, if this was to happen in the following year he was happy to try again, and again until he got good at it. He certainly knew from that, that when he left school he wanted to do something that involved him casting magic. He didn’t want to be duellest but sitting behind a desk at all times wasn’t going to suit him much at all either. There had been to be some balance he could reach. Simon had a small idea of what he wanted, but it was just an idea, he’d picked the classes for it, but he wouldn’t talk about it until he had gotten his OWLs at least. With that thought the boy knew he should get to class, so he packed up his things and left for that room.

Having really enjoyed how they did the previous astronomy lesson, he was looking forward to what they would be covering in the next. He took a seat in the room and looked up at the professor as the woman got started. It made sense to cover the death of a star after they had covered the birth of a star, even if it was something that was perhaps a little more grim. He wrote down some of the bits and pieces about what the professor was saying about it. He didn't like the lecture, it wasn't a particularly pleasant subject matter, but it was a necessary part of learning about stars. He made sure to write down everything that the woman was saying, getting the different names of the different things, getting the technical things and the temperatures, all in all, it was a rather complex lecture. It did come to an end, and the professor dismissed them with homework, which Simon wasn't happy about. It would just be more annoying to have to do more work on this subject matter, but he'd do it eventually. He packed away his things and headed to see if he could find Charlotte. He thought it would be nice to spend some time with a friend.

Athena knew that the duelling tournament was going on, but she had had no interest whatsoever in it. Maybe she would reconsider it next year, though she liked what activities she was doing already. Between homework and spending time with her friends, it didn't leave a lot of options open, but she knew deep down even that was an excuse. Still, she didn't want to be overly busy. She didn't think getting more involved would make others like her more, which was the reason she joined clubs - besides enjoying whatever she became part of, she wanted others to know the nice her, not the real her. That didn't always work out. She was in second year and already made one or two enemies she would rather not even see or think about.

Athena grabbed her books for her next lesson, which happened to be Astronomy. She sighed. As interesting as it sounded the girl did not think she would take it next year. It wasn't going to help her future. It didn't have anything to do with magic, after all and Athena was going to have a career than involved her practicing magic. She took a seat, sending a smile to the professor as they began the lesson. The death of a star was a little less fascinating than the birth of a star, Athena thought bemused. At first she didn't think it was very logical that the bigger a star was the quicker it died, but then Professor Harrington explained it in more detail and Athena had ‘oooohhhh‘ written all over her face. She tried to imagine what the teacher was explaining as she took notes. Once the lesson was over the girl yawned and packed up, before she thanked Professor Harrington for the lesson and left the tower with her best friend.
