Professor Styx knew that this lesson would be an easy one, which was no issue for him. Professor Styx entered the Defence Against the Dark Arts, and saw that the first years were all here and seated where they should be. They were going to be practicing dueling, and that would be a treat to them. Professor Styx waited for everyone to be silenced before he started, "Today, we will not be taking notes or enduring a lecture. We will be going over two spells, and then using them. One is called Stupefy, a stunning spell. All you would have to do is point and aim. The spell takes some concentration. Also, there is the simple blocking spell. It is Protego. It will block the spells that will be coming at you." He leaned against the desk, and he continued, "I want you to pair up with a partner, and stand opposite of each other in the front of the room. I want you to attempt to stun each other, while the other uses the spell, Protego, to block the spell." As stated in his first lesson it was part of the rules to bring their wands with them because they would never know when they were going to be using them. "Once everyone is ready, I will instruct you to begin." It looked as though all the first years had found a partner and they were away from the desks and in front of the room. "If someone gets stunned from not using the spell Protego properly, I will revive them. Now begin." Once the practicing began, and he had to revive those that were stunned, it was time to leave. He dismissed them, without homework this time. Assignment: Roleplay the lesson.Defence Against the Dark Arts,1,4 |

Gerry arrived early for Defence Against the Dark Arts. It wasn't her favourite subject, nothing was likely to unseat Potions, but it was fascinating. She pulled out her notes and was pouring through last week's lecture notes when Professor Styx walked in. Her eyebrows rose in delighted surprise when he said they were going to duel not listen to a lecture this time. She slipped her wand out of her pocket where she always kept it. She never passed up the chance to practice her magic. Standing up, she made eye contact with Hufflepuff girl and smiled her way into a partnership. They walked to the front of the room. Gerry stood opposite her partner, held out her wand and took a fencing stance. Or at least what she hoped looked like a fencing stance. She wobbled side to side, her wand shaking slightly. Gerry took the Protego turn first. She was a little slow and got through "Prot-" before her partner's Stupefy spell hit her chest. Gerry hit the floor. The professor revived her and her partner and her switched parts. Gerry shouted "Stupefy" and her partner responded with a faster "Protego" than Gerry had managed. Gerry scowled and then changed her mind. Her partner had succeeded. She should celebrate that. She reschooled her face into a smile. "Sorry, Good job! I'll get you next time.", she said the smile reaching her eyes. Gerry and her partner switched off casting Stupefy and Protego. She actually managed to catch her partner off-guard a few times, but slumped stunned to the ground more times than the two. Her reflexes were too slow. When it did appear, her Protego charm was adequate. She planned to practice on her own later. When the professor called the end of class, Gerry grinned happily. Feeling exhilarated, Gerry packed up her belongings and left the classroom. |

Arvel knew immediately that today's Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson was going to be a disaster. He was too distracted to focus properly on anything, and that included casting spells. Reluctantly, he paired up with another Hufflepuff, assuming an offensive stance. Maybe, if he got in there first, he could knock his partner out and not have to worry about trying to defend himself. Unfortunately, before he could so much as open his mouth, his partner fired a stunning spell at him. He raised his wand to deflect it, but in a panic completely forgot the incantation. The next thing he knew, Professor Styx was reviving him from a short nap. Arvel groaned as he stood up, rolling his sore shoulder to ease the pain. From then on, he focused hard, managing to block two more spells and even cast one at his partner, though he missed by some inches. It was good enough for him. Packing up, he hurried out. |

[justify]Though Analei wanted to be an Auror, the idea of having to do the practical side of Defence Against the Dark Arts panicked the young Hufflepuff. She had so far, during her year at Hogwarts, discovered she was much better at the written side of things. But this was important. As soon as Professor Styx said they had to partner up, Analei turned to Emilia, glad that she would always have a friend in class. The two girls stood opposite each other. Analei had seen the dueling matches, so she took the stance she thought was the best. The girls spent the time trialing the spells on each other, Analei found herself on the ground being awoken by her Professor once, and though her Protego wasn't perfect, she was feeling confident by the end of the lesson. She was going to have to practice a lot more, but it was a lot of fun, and she really enjoyed working with Emilia. Analei was surprised that they weren't given any homework, but she supposed that learning the spells and practicing them was going to be homework enough for her. She had to get them perfect.
