Professor Kalif Styx
Member Avatar
Patriarch of the Zhefarovich Family, Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor, Slytherin Head of House, Former Death Eater, Legilimens, Occlumens

Professor Styx seemed completely unaffected when he had to use the curses in class to demonstrate in front of the students. In his opinion, he thought that they needed to know about them to better guard themselves from threats from those that would gladly use these curses against them. Once the fourth years were in the classroom, they could see their professor leaning against the front of the desk, and in the jar next to him was a black spider, trying to escape through the glass. Professor Styx failed to notice if many of the students in this room were scared of spiders, though it was a common fear anyway. Once everyone had arrived and were counted for, Professor Styx stated, "We will be learning about the Cruciatus Curse. The word Crucio itself is a Latin word for torture and that is what this curse does. It tortures people by inflicting them in excruciating pain." They should all understand how severe this curse is, and in his opinion, he thought that this curse made Imperio look like a simple hex.

"This curse, if used, has a life sentence to Azkaban ready and waiting for its perpetrator." Professor Styx figured that would be what would make the students think that this curse is highly dangerous. He opened the jar containing the spider, and he enlarged it so it was near palm size so the class could see before he would have to demonstrate the curse. He put the spider on the desk, and he uttered, "Crucio." Instantly the spider began to shrivel itself with pain, writhing in agony on the table in front of the entire class. After a moment, he released the curse and reduced the size of the spider. He thought that the spider would scurry on, however the spider seemed to be recovering from the curse. It remained still on the table.

Professor Styx turned his onyx eyes to the students and he intoned, "This curse can render a personal mentally traumatized, which would cause them to spend their lives in Saint Mungo's due to irreparable damage to their brains. This happened commonly in the first and second wizarding wars. Those people were forever scarred, and that should give you a few clues on to how damaging this curse is. To use this curse efficiently, one must want to cause ill and harm. Righteous anger or justice will not complete this curse." Professor Styx tapped the board with his wand and the homework of writing an essay on this curse appeared. "Have this turned in by next week. Class dismissed." The doors opened allowing the fourth years to leave.

Assignment: Roleplay the lesson and do the homework assigned.

October was rattled after last week. Experiencing that curse had been unlike anything she had ever experienced before, and just the thought of facing Professor Styx sent a shudder through her. October had never found the professor especially intimidating before, but after experiencing the imperius curse at his hands, even having signed up for it willingly, the thought of what he could do to her if he wanted to was downright terrifying. She chose a seat nearer the back than her usual, setting her things up to take notes and hoping for once that she wouldn't be called on for anything.

October had read ahead in her books and knew which curse they would likely be covering next, but it was another level of intimidating to hear Professor Styx say it. She took notes as he spoke though, doing her best to take in the necessary information. She hadn't prepared herself for the possibility of a demonstration though - when she had read ahead, October had assumed that the lesson on this curse would be theoretical only. Her stomach sank as she watched Professor Styx withdraw the spider and she was torn between her skin crawling at the sight of the creature, and the horror of knowing what was going to happen to it next. Gritting her teeth, October tried not to recoil as Professor Styx demonstrated the horrible spell, stomach turning at how much pain the spider seemed to be in. It was a relief when the spell was over and she did her best to put herself back together, finishing off her notes. She wrote down what the homework assignment was, relieved when class was finished, and packed up her things lightning fast, hurrying out of the classroom quickly.

Defense Against the Dark Arts Lesson Three

The incantation for the Cruciatus curse, Crucio, translates to 'I torture', and that is precisely what this curse does. It inflicts intense, agonising pain on the target. Though the curse leaves no visible marks whatsoever the pain it causes is immense, to a degree that someone subjected to the curse for too long can lose their mind forever. The spell was invented in the early middle ages, and deemed unforgivable in 1717, along with the other two unforgivable curses. The sentence for using it on another person is life imprisonment in Azkaban. It has been used by many dark wizards throughout history, including during the wizarding wars. The curse must be cast out of malice and hatred, it will not function correctly as a tool of justice.

After Valentine's day, Tristan was starting to focus on the end of the year. With the last school event over, the exams were looming ever-closer. And after the exams, he would soon start his fifth year. Tristan still remembered how he had looked at the prefects in fifth year when he had just started at school, they had seemed impossibly old and wise to him. He hoped to show that same kind of confidence to new first years in the future.

The previous Defence lesson had both been interesting and sort of horrifying. He felt bad for October and hoped she was doing okay now. He took a seat and looked at Professor Styx, then at the black spider. Spiders didn't bother him, and it looked especially unthreatening right next to the professor. The professor told them they were going to learn about the Cruciatus Curse in this lesson, which was definitely more intimidating than the Imperius curse had been. At least, it wouldn't be used on a student. That did make a difference. Tristan assumed that was what the spider was for. He watched in distaste as the professor demonstrated the curse for them. It didn't look very fun for the spider, but also didn't look in any way different than he had expected. Was there really any value in them seeing this? It didn't feel like they were really learning much from this. When it was over, he started taking a few notes on the things the professor said about the curse. He spoke about it very casually, for something so awful. But Tristan supposed he was used to conveying information like this. When the lesson was over, he gathered his things and left the classroom. He hoped to catch up with October, though that didn't seem likely as she was one of the first to leave.

Questioning Everything | Honeydukes Assistant | fifth year

[justify]Jerara felt bad about not sending ellie a red rose, having only sent her a pink one, he was thinking that perhaps that had been the wrong choice because of the rose that she had sent him. Jerara was just glad that Ellie was so understanding about it. This was his first relationship, his first real…...love…..Jerara didn’t know. He liked Ellie a lot and he was sure he was falling in love with her, but he hadn’t yet figured out if he loved her yet. Though Roses didn’t really mean much? In any case, all of this worrying had led to spend his time in front of advice books, teenage books that he would’ve never picked up before. But it was time to put that aside for another week and focus on all the work and classes that he had. Jerara had a bunch of work that he needed to do, and that he would do after any of his classes. And later into the night. The teen double checked all of the books and homework he had put into his bag before getting himself dressed before then leaving the dorm room and heading to the class.

Since watching someone be put under the imperius curse, he couldn't help but think it would be interesting to see the other two. They were elements of magic that were wrong, and forbidden for good reason, but he wondered if the fact they were so easily forbidden didn't mean they wouldn't see the power of them, experience the power. He also though that while it was interesting to learn about the spells, they didn't really go into any other sort of dark magic. He knew that was a subject in other schools, and he couldn't help but wonder why they didn't do it in Hogwarts. He took his seat and looked to the professor as the man took out a black spider and put the curse on it. This curse was certain less fun than the one before. It didn't have the same elements that could be enjoyed as the one before. It wasn't a good spell, that much was certain. He couldn't take his eyes off it though, he couldn't help but wonder what it took to be able to cast that spell. How powerful did a person need to be for them to be able to cast that curse with it being nothing. The boy wrote down a few extra bits that the professor said about it. How people could be traumatised from it. well, it was torture. He packed up his things, with a note of the homework and left the room.

[justify]The blonde rushed into the dorm room, she had been at the library doing a last piece of homework when she had realised the time and had noted that she didn’t have that much time before her first class of the day. She ran a brush through her hair quickly before grabbing all the different books and notes that she could find for the day that she was about to face. All of the notes and homework that she would need to put in, taking about bits from the day before that she wouldn’t need. There were a lot of things that the hufflepuff needed to be sure she had before she left for the class. Eventually the girl was sure she had everything and she got herself dressed. She was sure that she looked presentable, despite the fact that she had very little time ahead of her to do so, the hufflepuff didn’t want to turn up to class looking a state. Signy rushed out of the room and headed to the classroom. She hated being late, it was just never a good thing, she knew that working hard meant always being on time and not being on time was bad.

Signy had thought about skipping class, knowing where this semester of defence against the dark arts would take hadn't left her feeling particularly enthused by the prospect of any of the lessons. Which was such a stark comparison because she liked learning about everything. There was no class that Signy didn't work had in and yet for this one she didn't even want to attend. Never had she thought about skipping class before. The girl had however made herself go, knowing that it would be better to attend than to not. She didn't want those coming up on her school record. She sat down, and looked at her books and notes and didn't look up at the professor. She only briefly glanced up when he gave them a brief introduction before doing the spell. She didn't want to look at a spider as it suffered. She didn't particularly feel anything towards spiders but she wouldn't want that sort of torture to be upon anyone. It was over fairly quickly and the professor began to give them a little more information about it. Signy listened and made a few notes, but the moment they were allowed to leave, Signy packed up her things left. She'd rather never think about that again, and she knew she would go to the next class. School record be damned.
