Professor Styx was in the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom earlier than the rest of the first years. They were going to be arriving at once point. Professor Styx leaned against the desk and he stared at the open doors to see that some of the first years had arrived, and this was another lecture that they were going to have to endure. They were all soon seated and then they were going to be learning more about the Dark Arts today. He began the lesson, "Whilst we have been talking more about the general idea of the Dark Arts, we will be learning about some specific usages and their effects as well. These are rather famous usages which Death Eaters and Aurors alike use them in combat." Professor Styx paused for just a moment for the time being, wondering if they were getting any idea of what he was speaking of. "Who can tell me the three most famous Dark curses are?" Students rose their hands, and he nodded at one, and the student answered correctly. "Precisely. These curses are powerful and relentless. The person who would be casting the curses must want ill and harm to come in order to use these curses properly. However, if used enough, they will overwhelm the caster with anger, frustration, everything you can think of that is wicked and evil." Professor Styx gazed around the classroom to see everyone that was wrapping their heads around this subject. "Aurors are allowed to use these curses against dark wizards or witches and have a license to kill. They are, regardless, illegal and wrong. They corrupt people when used enough, even Aurors." Professor Styx tapped on the board and the homework wrote itself on the board for the students to copy down. "List the Unforgivable Curses and write an essay on their effects. You are to have this finished for the next lesson." Professor Styx looked at the time and they were almost going over the time that they had for this period. He told the class, "Class is dismissed just a little early. This will give you more time to get done with the assignment." The doors opened and the class was free to leave. Assignment: Roleplay the lesson and do the assignment in the lesson.Defence Against the Dark Arts,1,3 |

[justify]Analei had enjoyed doing the homework for the previous lesson, and though they had learnt about something terrible, the Hufflepuff was looking forward to learning more. However, the back seemed like a good spot to still sit, so she sat there with Emilia, giving her a smile when she arrived. Analei took out all her equipment, expecting another lecture. She was right, as Professor Styx began to talk. As he asked what the three dark curses were, Analei raised her hand tentatively. She still wanted to impress the Professor, as scary as he was, but she knew the answer and couldn't just let the opportunity pass. "The - the killing curse, the Cruciatus Curse and the Imperius Curse." Analei answered. A small, proud smile lingered on her face as the Professor continued, and she quickly wrote down the notes as he was speaking. It was surprising to her that Aurors were allowed to use the curses, she didn't think she'd ever be able to use them; but as soon as that thought crossed her mind, she remembered how angry she did get at times, and would probably use it if she was angry enough. Just feel incredibly guilty afterwards. Analei excitedly wrote down their assignment, and hurriedly packed up her things, saying goodbye to Emilia before rushing to the library to get it done. Gerry entered the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom and sat down. Last class had been fascinating and terrifying. Such evil in recent wizarding history had been an unknown to her. She pulled out her notes ready for another lecture. Gerry frowned as Professor Styx began his lecture. She had done reading in preparation for this class, but she felt the weight of not growing up in the wizarding world sometimes. Several students raised their hands to tell them their guesses. A Hufflepuff girl answered his question. Gerry carefully wrote down the three curses. The killing curse was easy to understand. She hazarded a mental guess about what the other two did from her basic understanding of Latin. They were not pleasant. Gerry wondered why the dark curses filled the casters with wickedness and evil. Was it an inherit part of the magic or did doing things that your soul knew was wrong twist you no matter whether you were already on the path to darkness or not. She could not understand why Aurors were allowed to use any of them. Not only could they be corrupted, but them being able to use use dark magic did not make any sense. Why would Aurors need to torture, mentally control and kill criminals? Didn't criminals have rights like in the muggle world? And the risk of corrupted Aurors did not seem worth it. She wrote down her homework assignment and headed off to the library to research. Homework

Jacob was scared that they had to do spells in this class today. He wasn't good at any spells or magic, so he was a bit scared. He walked into the classroom and soon found out that they were just getting lectured. Thus a win for Jacob, he grabbed his stuff and starting writing things down. It was odd that they were learning the worst curses at there in their first year. He didn't want to know them, he never needed them anyway. He wasn't going around killing random people whenever he desired to. It was odd that Aurors used them, but they corrupted people. Why would something like that get used then. It seemed a bit vile and horrid. Jacob shrugged and wrote everything down that was being said in the lesson. He wasn't going to fall back behind. Jacob noted down the homework and left the classroom when he was done. |

Kira came to class a bit later than she liked. She found an open seat next to Jacob though, and she sat down quickly. Professor Styx said they would just be listening to a lecture so she pulled out her quill and paper and took careful notes throughout the class. She had already read about this so she had the homework assignment done before class was dismissed. She turned it into the tall man and headed out the door, on her way to the next class. |

Defence Against the Dark Arts was one of the few classes Arvel really paid attention in - not because he liked the subject any more or less than the others, but because he'd heard a rumour about the sorts of punishments Professor Styx gave disobedient students, and he didn't want to find out if it was true. Today's lesson was another lecture, and though Arvel felt like writing a story that had been circling around his head for the last few days, he decided instead to take some proper notes. At least he could be sure he wouldn't fail this class. It was all so easy, though. Memorising information wasn't difficult. It was the practical stuff Arvel really wanted to get on with. At last the class was dismissed, and Arvel headed off without making a note of the homework assignment. He could remember it. Probably. |
