Mother of Two Girls | Astronomy Professor | HS Graduate Ravenclaw

[justify]After staying up late the night before to study the skies, Sarah was feeling tired that evening for her next class. She vowed to stop feeling as though she needed to be present for breakfast each morning as it was far too early for her after being up more than half the night to focus on her own studies of phenomenon in the universe. Preparing the lesson had been rather easy which pleased the woman. She hoped her students would be just as prepared for the lesson as she was. Hearing voices and footsteps coming up to the door she waved her wand and the door swung open.

"Kia ora*, hello come on in," Sarah said letting the students enter and get settled before starting with today's topic. "Today were are going to take a look at the Andromeda Galaxy, it's also called M31 for more advanced astronomers," she said with a smile. She liked giving them little facts like that they could write home about. "Now, Andromeda is about 2.5 million light-years away, that means it takes light 2.5 million years to travel from the Andromeda Galaxy to Earth and vice versa. The galaxy is about twice the size of our own Milky Way with an estimated 400 billion stars."

"Now Andromeda is a spiral galaxy, like a giant pinwheel of stars, gas and dust. And there are two satellite galaxies similarly to the way the moon is a satellite of the Earth around Andromeda," Sarah added pausing from a moment. "Now, not wanting to scare you, but Astronomers have discovered that galaxies are racing apart, the distance between us and other galaxies is always growing. However that's not the case for us and Andromeda, we are actually racing towards towards, the two galaxies are closing in about 500,000 kilometers an hour. This pace will grow faster the closer the galaxies become as their gravity's pull each other in. However, this will hardly be a worry for us as the collision will happen in about three billion years from now," Sarah added in.

Looking at the clock she noted the time and the Professor smiled at the students. "Well it seems we have run our time talking about Andromeda. There is homework this week so please complete it!" Sarah said over the students packing up and getting ready to go. She waved her wand once more and the door reopened to let the students out. She had wished to let them view Andromeda that evening but the time had run just too short.

After Valentine's day, April knew she had to make up with Kauri. She just wasn't sure if she had the right gesture yet. She missed her friend, though she still didn't understand why he insisted on dating that stupid boy. They were way too young to date, in her opinion. But it seemed like less of her classmates agreed with that every day, couples were starting to pop up more consistently. But she was happy to just focus on friendship, that was way better than smooching.

April was never really excited about Astronomy, though she thought the professor was nice enough. The lectures just made her twitchy, as she had to listen for a long time. But she would try, as she usually did. She took her seat, smiling at Professor as she took out her parchment and quill. She took notes on the lecture, writing down that Andromeda was a spiral galaxy, which meant it was like a giant pinwheel of stars, gas and dust. She also wrote down about the satellite galaxies. It was strange to think that the distance between galaxies could grow. The lecture didn't take very long at all, which was good. April was happy to leave the classroom, though she stopped to take note of the homework first.

Valentines day was over and Elly was focused back on lessons again. She was such a nerd and wanted to do good in the classes. Elly sat down in her least favourite class and waited for it to start. Astronomy wasn't hard, it was just boring. The new Professor was more fun so that made the class a tiny bit better.

Elly walked into the tower and sat down. She grabbed her stuff and was ready for a long lecture. Elly tried to keep up and wrote everything down she thought was useful for the coming exams. Well they were halfway, but Elly knew things were going quickly. The Andromeda Galaxy sounded like all the other ones and she wasn't sure why it was so special. The Professor said everyone would die in about three billions year, which sounded like fun.

That was like the third thing that could kill us. The sun could die, supernovas and now this. Space seemed dangerous and a giant murderer. Elly smiled and waited for the lesson to end so she could leave the classroom.
