![]() Professor Harrington looked at the front of the room from the back admiring her display of the phases of the moon. Hearing some smaller voices outside the door she quickly cleaned up the room and opened the door allowing the first years in. This week was special, she had finally managed to get all the snacks the students listed during their first week over onto a snack table. During the first semester this week fell perfectly close to Halloween, but she didn't want these second semester first years feel like they were missing out on anything. "Come on in, you'll find if you completed the first homework with a snack listed over on the snack table. Now there is enough to go around so don't be afraid to take a little of everything, I included some healthy options of a veggie tray and fruit as well!" Sarah said as the students came into the room. She hoped they liked the snacks, some were hard to find. "So this week, if you can't guess, we are going to be exploring the moon. Not in person of course, but in details. We are going to look at the different phases of the moon. At the times of a New Moon, the moon is located between us and the sun. This isn't the same as an eclipse, it just means that the side reflecting the Sun's rays is facing away from us. Waxing Crescent is when the moon appears to be less than half light up in direct sunlight. The First Quarter, half of the moon is visible in the night time sky, lit up by the Sun's light. All the phases of the light appear to be increasing," she said looking around the class making sure the student's were understanding what she was talking about. "At Waxing Gibbous the moon appears to be more than half fully lit by sunlight....during a Full Moon, the side facing the Earth is fully visible. This is the time when the Earth is between the Moon and Sun, but not in a position where it is blocking the light of the Sun." Professor Harrington paused with a smile on her face. "Now at this point the Moon is start to lose area that is lit, this is called the Waning phase. The first is the Waning Gibbous, the moon appears to be more than one-half, but the opposite side from the Waxing Gibbous. The Last Quarter, only half of the Moon's Surface is reflecting the Sun's rays. Waning Crescent, the Moon appears last than one-half illuminated by the direct Sunlight. We then fade back into a New Moon, where the Moon is not visible in the nighttime sky." She took a pause after reading that out loud from her notes for the lesson. "That is all for today, if you have questions on anything we've worked on so far, feel free to stop by in my Office or ask me now on your way out! There is a short bit of homework to do, very easy if you were taking notes today, also feel free to take a moment and gaze up at the moon and stars before leaving as we have a beautiful clear sky tonight," Professor Harrington said dismissing the class and sitting down at her desk while the students all left. She hoped they did enjoy their snacks and the snacks others enjoyed. Homework: RP the lesson and complete the homework for extra points. Homework + Code for Homework Astronomy,1,3

Zoe walked into the Astronomy classroom with her friend Lavinia, and her eyes widened as she spotted a table piled with an assortment of snacks. Look, she pointed. Chocolate frogs! The Professor elaborated and said that those who had completed the homework before and specified their favourite snack would find them on the snack table. Zoe immediately darted for them, and did not bother with anything else. She settled down in her seat as the Professor then started talking about the phases of the Moon. Zoe listened intently before deciding to write them down after polishing off her last chocolate frog. The moon had somewhat been a topic of her interest, but it was not one of her favourites. After pointing out each phase, the Professor then gave the class homework before dismissing them. Zoe had thoroughly enjoyed the snacks - and in her opinion, they had kept her awake through the lesson. Homework Assignment

Though Astronomy wasn't her favorite, or best subject, Analei's face did light up when the Professor mentioned snacks. That was definitely bound to make the class go faster - or at least keep Analei awake. The blonde managed to find some popcorn quickly, taking some for herself before sitting down at a table, getting her things out, ready to take notes. Analei took down the notes as the Professor was talking, but it just wasn't sinking in. She didn't quite understand what she was writing or what Professor Harrington was saying. The moon was just pretty - wasn't that enough? As the Professor finished the lesson, she invited people who had questions to go and ask, but Analei was way too embarrassed to do that. She could feel her face flush, angry at herself for not understanding. The Hufflepuff didn't finish her popcorn, or even take it with her as she quickly packed her things away and stormed out of the room. She wanted to go straight to the library to work on her homework, but it was going to have to wait until the morning. Just great. Homework

Jacob was finding Astronomy rather enjoyable. It didn't require as much effort as some of the other classes did, and he thought Professor Harrington was pretty nice. Hearing that there were snacks, Jacob rushed to the back. "Yes, Sprite! " he exclaimed, pumping a fist into the air as he piured himself a glass and grabbed a pack of jelly slugs. The boy gave little thought to what this much sugar this late at night was going to do. Jacob was careful not to bump into anyone as he made his way back to his desk, pointedly ignoring only one student. He'd noticed the moon pictures in the front so he nodded as the professor explained what they'd be learning. Jacob jotted down notes as he enjoyed his snacks, making note that there were two waxing, two waning, two crescent, and two gibbous. It was going to be tricky to remember which was which, that was for sure. Soon enough, the lesson was at an end and Jacob packed his bags before leaving, making sure to toss his trash basketball-style on the way out. |
