Mother of Two Girls | Astronomy Professor | HS Graduate Ravenclaw

[justify]Sarah waited for all the 7th years to enter. This week she had out a fair amount of muggle sodas, Orange Cream, Birch Beer, Root Beer, Shirley Temples, all in bottles waiting for the students. She assured them the ones labeled as Beer weren't alcoholic in anyway before beginning the lesson. "Could anyone name two muggle astronomers for me?" Sarah pointed out towards the student raising their hand and got back the responses of "Galileo" and "Nicolaus Copernicus" which she smiled to and have the student extra house points for getting good answers. "Today we will talk about Copernicus." She said looking at her students with a smile.

Sarah cleared her throat and took a sip of the root beer she had picked out for herself while the students prepared for note taking. "Nicolaus Copernicus was born in 1473 and raised in Poland. He created the Copernican Theory, the belief that the Sun is at the center of the universe. Which for his time was a revolutionary thought and not too far from reality. This theory is also referred to as 'sun centered'. He is famous also for writing a book on astronomy called 'De Hypthesibus Motuum Coelestium a se Censtitutis Commentariolus', more commonly known as Commentariolus."

"Moving on to another: Claudius Ptolemy is probably the most famous astronomer and mathematician - despite the fact most of his theories were proved wrong and incorrect later on in the future." Sarah said with a wave her hand for dramatic effect.

"At first, Ptolemy began to accept that the earth was at the center of the universe, but in later studying, he began to believe that the earth and planets moved in circles around larger objects. He created the term epicycle, which was used to describe the circular paths that objects in space moved around. Ptolemy was the first person on Earth to create the horoscopes." Professor Sarah grinned and said, "Not exactly astronomy but it was a good try."

"Our last person, today, is Edmund Halley: he was the first famous British astronomer and he was the first to calculate a comets orbit. He wrote a book called Astronomiae Cometicae Synopsis (Synopsis on Cometary Astronomy). Which was started in 1682 and published in 1705. In this he mathematically demonstrated that comets move in a elliptic orbits around the sun and how over time they would pass the same point. He had such an accurate prediction that when the comet- now named Halley's Comet- returned in 1758, it validated his theory."

After all that Sarah was glad to be finished. It had been quite the lecture and she was happy it was over. "Alright, please start studying for your exams, I'd like everyone to just review what we've learned so far so you don't happen to forget anything, that's your homework!" She said as the students began to pack up, waving her wand the door opened and she smiled watching them go.

struggling artiste | class of 2046, former head boy

[justify]The head boy was feeling quite stressed about the semester, just because it was his last ever semester it didn’t make him any less stressed about it. In fact it was possibly more stressful, he had a quidditch game at the end of the week, and the boy had so much homework to do too. It was just so much. He had just come in from a quidditch practice and was trying to figure out what homework he had left to do in the week, which bits he would have to do after class and which bits were ready to be handed in. The teen worked hard to sort through all of it to quickly sort out all he needed. He deeply regretted taking so many classes at this NEWT level. It was just a lot of work and a lot of revision. The teen finally got everything together and was able to take a shower and actually get himself ready for the day. Tholomyes took his time getting himself ready, allowing some of the stresses to wash away a little before getting himself dressed and took his bag and then headed out to the class, he just needed to get through this week.

Tholomyes walked into the astronomy classroom, looking forward to what they might be covering. As the term was reaching it's midpoint, he was increasingly enjoying what they were teaching him. It was almost like he was making the most of what he would be taught, in the last few lessons that he would ever be doing. He was looking forward to not having to go to class each day or having his head stuck in a book. As much as he had enjoyed that before, he knew since it was coming to an end how good it would be to be free of it. The boy looked up at the professor as the woman began the lesson, by asking them if they could name any muggle astronomers. Theo raised his hand and when picked to answer said, "Galileo," He pulled his notes towards him as someone else gave another name and then they got started on the latter man who'd been brought up. Tholomyes made sure to get the names of the astronomers that the professor was listing, and was sure to get the important theories which they created. So he would be able to look them up later. However, after the professor had listed the final one, one which Theo could vaguely remember learning about in his muggle classes before hogwarts, the class was wrapped up and he was able to leave the room.
