Mother of Two Girls | Astronomy Professor | HS Graduate Ravenclaw

Professor Harrington wondered how the fifth years were fairing, they seemed to all being doing well in their lessons. "This week we are moving on from the moon and going further out to comets. They are a rather rare sight but we are effected everyday by them. They have tails that stretch across the solar system as they come close to the sun, warming their icy cold centers," Professor Sarah started on this week's lecture. She hoped the students wouldn't be bored by another, but she knew next week would be full of exciting lessons if they only make it through this year. "Comets are often during their formation created nearer to planets and as smaller planetary bodies they can be referred to as planetesimals. Made of small specs of dust and ice fuzed together forming larger bodies. Comets are these planetesimals that were pushed to the brink of our solar system during the time of formation," Sarah spouted out feeling as thought it were all a lot to say. She hoped the students understood.

"Think of them as very giant dirty snowballs, and that's basically what they are in a simple sense. They come from two places The Kuiper Belt and the Oort Cloud, as you can imagine they come from a very great distance away," Sarah said to the class. "Now occasionally one of these planetesimals will be nudged or kicked from their typical orbit causing them to head towards the center of the solar system, those are what we then would refer to as comets. This is when the tails will form as the inner section is much warmer from the Sun than the farther reaches of the Solar System," Sarah said with a smile, she found all this talk about great travel very exciting indeed.

"Now, a comet doesn't live forever once it's begun this new orbit that brings it close to the Sun. While on the rare chance a comet runs into any of the planets, it's more likely the comet will continue to circle the Sun for thousands of years each time melting within the Inner Solar System becoming smaller and smaller until it is nothing at all," Sarah said commented on the life of the comets. "Now on average a major comet can be seen from Earth around every five years, however each comet is different including the length of time it is visible and the Hemisphere you can see the comet in varies. Also depending on where the comet is coming from the time between visits will vary greatly."
"Oh, looks like we've run out of time for this week, uh, no homework! Enjoy your time off of that by studying the skies!" Professor Sarah said waving her wand to open the door and see the students out.

Homework: Please roleplay the lesson.

Flavio's valentine's day had been the best one of his life so far, making him feel happy and content throughout the week and burying the stress he felt about his OWL exams, at least temporarily. It even allowed him to feel comfortable arriving to his astronomy class, rather than feeling anxious as he had for most of the semester. He sat down near the front of the room instead of the back and got out his notebook and quill, readying himself to take notes as professor Harrington explained the subject of the lesson. They would be moving on from moons and eclipses, to learn about comets. He wrote down every word she said, trying not to miss any information out. It was interesting to hear how comets formed and where they came from. When the professor began to speak about how comets could be seen from earth roughly every five years, with variances on where it can be seen, it made Flavio wonder if he would ever see a comet himself. It was a sight to behold, he was sure, and he wondered if there was a way to predict when and where a comet could be seen. He was tempted to raise his hand and ask the professor, but chose not to and instead kept taking notes for the remainder of the lesson. When the professor dismissed the class, Flavio packed up his things and left the room alongside November.

Part-Veela | Chaser | Hogwarts Monthly Writer & Assistant Editor | Heta Omega Secretary

Noemie was enjoying her new position on the monthly, while it had been tricky for her to get the hang of it, she was enjoying the new challenge of what it was presenting to her, she had a quidditch game at the end of the week which was complicating her life slightly but she was more than certain that she had a handle on all of it. She had sent the morning practicing on the picture and done some light exercise before heading back up to dorm room. She was sweaty and hot and just needed a shower. The part veela was quick to jump in the shower so that she could begin getting ready for the day ahead. It would be awful if she wasn’t able to shower with all the other things that she had to throughout the day. Noemie began getting ready for classes as soon as she was out of the shower. She tied up her hair, and began getting dressed. Throwing on the cleanest uniform on. She grabbed her homework, her books and her notes as well as the last few things she would need before heading out of the dorm and going to the classroom.

Noemie had been enjoying learning about the little different aspects of the astronomy that they hadn't covered before. It was a lot of different things that she needed to learn but it would be more than enough for her to feel like she'd revised some information and have actually learned new things too. The girl walked into the astronomy classroom and took her usual spot in the room. Her gaze shifted up to the professor at the front of the room as the woman began her lecture. She had known a little about comets but was keen to learn more. She pulled her work towards her to be able to take notes about what the woman was saying. The teen wanted get all of the information down, and be sure she wasn't lacking anything when it came to revising for the OWL. it was a rather long lecture as it turned out, but Noemie preferred that sort of lecture and kept up with all the professor was saying with ease. Something she was pretty proud of herself for. However, eventually the class was wrapped up and Noemie was able to leave. They didn't have any homework which was certainly good, so she had more study time. With that she packed up her things and left the room.

Valentine's day was something Amber had always seen as a day for friendship and family over romantic love, but had been very different now that she had a girlfriend. She had enjoyed going to the dance with Ainsley a lot, it was so different with an actual girlfriend. The yule ball had been magical, and the Valentine's dance had been fun as well. It was almost sad they only had two more of each to enjoy together. The dance had made her feel very happy, and she carried that feeling with her for the rest of the week

She took a seat near the front of the class, eager to get started. Astronomy never failed to give her new and interesting information, so she was eager to get started. Professor Harrington told them they would be moving on from the subject of the moon and heading over to the subject of comets. Amber took notes about the tails of comets that stretched across the solar system, that was something she hadn't known. She also noted down that they grew bigger and bigger like snowballs and came from two places. The Kuiper Belt and the Oort Cloud. She hadn't known most of these things and took eager notes, smiling slightly. The lesson was over before she knew it and she was glad to have no homework to note down. She gathered her things and left the classroom with her friend Noemie.

As usual, Ainsley found herself looking forward to her Astronomy lesson for the week. As she made her way up the stairs to the classroom she wondered what incredible things they would be studying this week. She smiled at Professor Harrington as she entered the classroom and took her seat, getting her things ready to take notes. Ainsley secretly hoped that today would be another practical lesson, but she figured it was more likely they would have another lecture. She enjoyed lectures too, but it was so much easier to learn by really getting involved in something.

As Professor Harrington started speaking Ainsley took notes, disappointed that her lecture prediction had been correct. The subject material was fascinating though, Ainsley had never seen a comet herself, but they played large roles in a lot of fantasy stories she had read. It was fascinating to learn more about what they really were and how they could form. It was such a strange thing to picture, an enormous snowball flying through space. She took notes all through class and when they were finished resolved to take Professor Harrington's advice to spend some time watching the skies this week, packing her things up and heading back to the common room.
