Mother of Two Girls | Astronomy Professor | HS Graduate Ravenclaw

[justify]Professor Sarah Harrington had just gotten back from popping home to tuck her youngest child into bed and by looking at her watch she noticed that it was nearly time for the second lesson for the first years. They seemed like a bright bunch and not too troublesome. Though there had been a few who hadn't played along during the first lesson she hoped things would be better now this week. Sitting at her desk in the front of the class she was beginning to hear the whispers and footsteps coming down the hall. The door was open and students began to come in. She tried to greet each student as they entered. "Welcome back first years, I hope you are ready for some note taking this week."

"Today we are going to be looking at the Solar System." Professor Harrington said as her students settled into their seats. She tapped a piece of paper that was sitting on a projection and images began to pop up on the front wall. It was the Solar System starting from the center and moving outwards on a loop of about a minute. "Solar System is what we call a star and all the objects that orbit around that star. That includes planets, rocks, debris, comets, and so on. Our Solar System has nine planets, the closest being Mercury and then Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and...Pluto." Sarah could see some confused faces, especially those who might have been raised with a muggle school system or muggle parents, though as a teacher she wasn't aware of any blood status for any of the students.

"Yes Pluto is a planet for as long as you study Astronomy in the Wizardry World." Professor Harrington was enjoying going over the basics with these students. She hoped they were paying attention or it might come back to get them later when they had exams that featured this information. "The first four planets are mostly of a solid material, the next four planets exist in a gaseous state and finally Pluto is of solid material like the first four planets." She could tell who was doodling vs. taking notes. Even could see a few who didn't seem to care at all. She knew Astronomy wasn't for everyone, but for their basic understanding of the wizardry world this was a required class so they needed to pay attention regardless.

"When muggles first started to look up into the night sky, they believed Earth was the center of all things, everything else simple revolved around us. It wasn't until about 400 years ago when a Wizard family leaked the truth about the Solar System and how it truly works. Since then Muggles have managed to accelerate into the first space age." Professor Harrington paused a moment to glance at the clock. Today's lesson was over and it was jam packed with information and she hoped her first years weren't too tired as it was late in the night now. "Well, that finishes today's lesson. Pack your things away and take note of this week's homework on the board here," she said pointing towards the board where the homework was written out for them.

_________

Homework:
Pick a planet of your choice and write a short essay (100 word) on that planet. Remember to cite where you get your information, remember if you plagiarize you will earn yourself a T.

Working on restraint.

[justify]Night time seemed like a weird time to try and get students to learn, but she supposed it made sense because they were studying the sky after all. Analei huffed quietly, not really feeling in the mood for the class. She just wanted to go sleep. Analei stood outside the classroom with the other students, waiting for the Professor. When she finally got there and they were allowed in, Analei forced herself to smile at the Professor. She felt bad; she was a nice Professor, Analei just didn't think she was going to enjoy the class that much.
Luckily, they were going to be taking notes. One of her favorite things. She hadn't learnt too much about the Solar System, and hadn't even studied ahead during the week. She had been too stressed about Potions and Defense Against the Dark Arts to worry about the stars. However, Analei still took notes as the Professor spoke about the Solar System. She made notes that Mercury Venus Earth Mars and Pluto were solid material, and Jupiter, Saturn Uranus and Neptune were gasses. She didn't quite understand what that meant, so she knew she'd have to look it up. Analei was surprised that someone from the Wizarding community had leaked information, but she supposed it was only fair that the Muggles also knew about the planet - space wasn't a secret that should be kept. Analei sighed as she wrote down the homework; as much as she loved homework, she wished she didn't have to write an essay about planets. Analei figured Earth would be too easy, so she decided to find information on another planet, to at least try and entertain herself.

Jacob was glad the walk to Astronomy was an easy one for him and he settled into his seat easily, waving good bye to some of his friends. He always liked having class with the Hufflepuffs. After Gryffindor, they'd become his favorite house. He wasn't exactly sure what to think of Astronomy yet, but the professor hadn't docked him points for his 'fact' last week so he figured he was doing ok.

Hearing they'd be learning about the solar system made Jacob smile. He knew that much and found it was nice to feel like he was ahead. In most of his classes, he was either on a level playing field or behind. Except flying and they'd never have that class again. Jacob quickly jotted down the planets beating the teacher to the end. As he looked around, he was surprised at some of the looks the students had given the professor. She hadn't said anything wrong even as he'd sniggered at her mention of the seventh planet.

Jacob kept up on notes, writing solid next to the first four, gas next to the next four and then solid again. And that's when he got distracted drawing pictures to help him remember the gaseous planets. He kept listening but he didn't look up until the end of the lesson. It hadn't surprised him at all that wizards had helped Muggles learn something new and then they'd gone with it, learning on their own he was sure. Jacob's grandfather was fully muggle, and he always enjoyed showing them what Muggles had learned to do without magic. It was always fascinating. Jotting down the homework, Jacob packed his bags and left the room.

Zoe walked into the Astronomy classroom all set to listen attentively. The Professor said nothing she was not familiar with, but she jotted down a few facts she thought to be noted for future reference.

She knew fully well that Pluto was a planet - but so was the case recently in the muggle world too. Pluto had been redeclared a planet - even after much debate - even though some books and websites were not quite up to date.

But her favourite planet was Jupiter - the biggest one in the solar system. So she decided that was to be her topic for the homework assignment. She took it down from the board and gathered her things, before exiting the classroom.

Emilia was settling back in to the school life, even if she still felt a little bit homesick. She tried to mostly focus on the good, like the friends she was starting to make and the fun events coming up. Valentine's day seemed exciting, and she wondered if she would get a rose. She would certainly send a few.

She headed up to the astronomy classroom and gave the professor a shy smile before seeking a seat next to Analei. She took out parchment and quill as the professor said they would be taking notes, then listened to the lecture about the Solar System. Emilia wrote down what a Solar System was and the nine planets theirs contained. She knew them, but it still felt best to write them down. She finished up her notes, then gathered her things to leave the classroom. She hoped next week would be as interesting.
