Sarah smiled as the students came into the room that night. She was glad to see them all alert and awake and after last week’s lesson with the seventh years going well with passing out snacks she decided to have snacks out for the fifth years as well. A couple warm drink choices and a few goodies to eat while they listened and took note this week on the lecture. "Welcome back 5th years, I have a few snacks there to the side if you'd like to take some before we get started," Sarah said pausing to allow the students to move around the room to get a drink and food before sitting down for the lesson. "This week we are going to discuss Eclipses. But, I'd like to just remind you all to keep practicing with the star charts," she said with a smile. Walking up to the front of the class Sarah cleared her throat and began the lecture. "A Solar Eclipse is when the moon passes between the Sun and Earth and the shadow of the moon is cast onto Earth," Sarah said having an image displayed on the board as an example of the Solar Eclipse. "This happens only when the moon is in a New Moon stage of its cycle but not every time it's in the New Moon cycle. When you stand in the line of totality, the moon will completely block the sun." Sarah looked around the classroom hoping the students caught that bit of information and understood it. "After hundreds of years of studying, we have come to know not just one type of Lunar Eclipse, but three: The Penumbra Lunar Eclipse, the Partial Lunar Eclipse, and the Total Lunar Eclipse. Now a Lunar Eclipse is when the Earth blocks the light of the Sun and casts a shadow on an otherwise brightly light moon. This is not the same as a New Moon, as you'll see here in comparison the moon is on the other side of the Earth from the Sun in these photos," Sarah said pointing out the differences in the two images now on the board. "For many years these eclipses have fascinated muggle and wizard alike. I remember growing up in the States and when I was 17 years old thousands of people traveled all over America to be in the shadow of the moon as it passed across the USA for a Solar Eclipse, at that time I was at Hogwarts Scotland and missed the moment but I have been able to see my fair share of both since, as traveling around the world is easy for us, isn't it?" Sarah said with a big smile and laugh. Clearing her throat she looked at the time and realized she needed to get back on track instead of recollecting her own experiences. "Now as the Moon passes through the Earth's shadow it takes on a full range of colors, the most famous being a bright red coloring during the Total Lunar Eclipse. Now what does all of this have to do with witches and wizards? I'll tell you now, but fair warning, we won't be covering any of these in this class, as this is Astronomy. There are plants that are effected specifically by the eclipses, some can only be planted, grown, and/or harvested during one. There are also charms and spells which can only be performed correctly during the eclipses, which is all just fascinating and there are books in the library you can read about those, or ask your charms and herbology Professors if you have more questions about those. Now, you all are dismissed, don't forget homework!" Sarah said with a wave of her wand the door flew open, probably waking up some of the more tired students. Solar Eclipse Image & Lunar Eclipse Image Homework for Extra Credit Please do one or more of the following: Option 1: Role play the lesson and research and write an essay on Solar Eclipses (150-300 words is acceptable) Option 2: Role play the lesson, Write a journal entry of a person watching a solar eclipse (150-300 words is acceptable) Option 3: Role Play the lesson, make your own graphic of a solar OR lunar eclipse, find out about the parts and label it and add some detail. Though Flavio was always excited to learn and wanted to learn as much as possible, the thought of attending another astronomy lesson and being taught by his girlfriend's aunt again was not exciting in the slightest. He still felt nervous that she was judging his every move, the quality of his work and his overall grades and not in a good way. The woman seemed nice and he was sure she would treat everyone in the class fairly but he could not help but still feel self conscious knowing his professor was part of November's family. He did not know if his worries would change as the semester continued but he did know that as he arrived to his second astronomy lesson of the year with November, he felt as awkward as he had the previous week. Even so he tried not to show how uncomfortable he was, despite choosing a seat at the back of the classroom rather than his usual spot at the front and ignoring the snacks the professor said were available. As she went on to introduce the lesson he got out his notebook, quil and ink and began writing, trying to focus on his work as that was what was most important. The lesson was about eclipses, of both the solar and lunar variety which Flavio found interesting. He had never seen an eclipse in his life, but had read about it when he was going through his astronomy textbook and ever since then the subject had intrigued him. He wrote about the solar eclipse and the components that went into it, then listed the three different types of lunar eclipses and compared them to each other. Overall it was very interesting, and Flavio was so enamored in taking in the information given to him in class that he almost forgot who was teaching him. However as the class was dismissed and he packed up his belongings he did remember. In an effort to not draw attention to himself, Flavio left the classroom with a group of his peers thinking that was the best way the professor would not notice him. |

After last week's fun with the star charts, Ainsley was looking forward to Astronomy more than ever. She made her way up to the classroom and took a seat, though as she was getting her quill and parchment ready Professor Harrington pointed them towards some snacks. Excited to get something to eat during class, Ainsley got up and quickly grabbed a small bun and a little cup of juice, sipping her juice happily as she resumed her seat. This week's lecture was fascinating to Ainsley, and the bread she had been picking at was quickly abandoned as she got absorbed in taking notes on everything Professor Harrington was saying. Ainsley always loved going out to watch eclipses with mum whenever there was one... the view from her home was beautiful, with no lights of the city around to brighten the sky. She had never seen a full solar eclipse though, and as Professor Harrington talked about them Ainsley wished that was different. Ainsley had never thought about the effect eclipses would have on magic before, but it certainly made sense that there was one. She was especially interested by plants that could only be tended during the eclipse, and was disappointed that they weren't going further into the subject. Maybe she could ask Professor Welch about them, if she could get up the nerve to talk to an unfamiliar professor. Or maybe an older student in the Wild Patch would know, or there would be something in the library. Ainsley was still thinking about plants when class finished and she packed up her things and thanked Professor Harrington, nibbling at her bun as she made her way back to the Hufflepuff common room. |

After being back for a while, Amber was used to having classes again. She enjoyed school and enjoyed learning, but mostly liked the social aspect of her life at Hogwarts. She spent most of her time with her girlfriend, but made sure to also still make time for her friends. The girl was the type of person to surround herself with others, and Hogwarts was a good place for that. She greatly enjoyed being a prefect so she could help younger students too. Amber was surprised to see snacks and drinks waiting for them as they entered the Astronomy lesson. She grabbed some tea and a biscuit before taking her seat. She took out her parchment and quill to take notes on today's lesson. Professor Harrington told them they were going to learn about eclipses today. Amber noted down that a Solar Eclipse meant the moon passed between the Sun and the Earth, causing the shadow of the moon to be cast onto the earth. She also noted down that this could only happen when the moon was in a New Moon stage of its cycle. Then she moved on to writing about the three different types of Lunar Eclipses. First writing about what a lunar eclips actually was. The professor talking about her own life was fun to hear, even if she had missed the moment itself. She took notes for the rest of the lesson, but when she was done she realized she had forgotten all about the tea and the biscuit was only half-eaten. The lesson had been absorbing, though it was a shame about the tea. When the lesson was over, she packed her things and left the tower with Ainsley.
