Professor Kalif Styx
Member Avatar
Patriarch of the Zhefarovich Family, Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor, Slytherin Head of House, Former Death Eater, Legilimens, Occlumens

Professor Styx entered the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom to see that some of the students had already arrived but not all of them. He went to the front of the class and turned to them. After the rest of the students had arrived, he shut the doors using magic and took attendance in his mind. He told the class, "You all were made aware that in our last lesson, we will be learning about the Imperius Curse." Professor Styx had chosen one student, just one, to be placed under the curse to demonstrate, but this was the only curse that he could demonstrate on the students unless he wanted to torture and kill them. There were a few he could live without, that was a fact. He waited for the class to get this information sunk into their brains before he continued on with the lesson.

"As you all know, the Imperius curse allows the caster to control whomever the spell is cast upon with no limitations. With the consent form that some students approached me with last week, I have chosen only one to perform this curse upon." His onyx eyes fell on the student that he chosen, and with his left hand, he motioned with his fingers to get out of their seat and come to the front of the classroom. "Come up here and let's get this over with." Professor Styx did not seem so pleased about having to do this, but it was inevitable. His voice and expression was cold, and may even give the volunteer an eerie feeling knowing that Professor Styx will place him under the curse to do whatever he wanted. Professor Styx would not have the student do anything bad, but it may give the students some enjoyment.

Professor Styx flourished his wand and he pointed at the student. He intoned, "Imperio." A bolt of light burst from the wand and hit the student dead on the chest. Professor Styx had the student completely under his control. "Jump on this desk," Professor Styx ordered and the student did just that, on the desk of another student. Professor Styx continued on, "Now, come down and show the class how many push ups you can do for us." Professor Styx continued to see the student obey his words without even a second thought. After three push ups, he ended the curse and told the student to go back to their desk. Professor Styx did not want to prolong the spell more than what was necessary. Perhaps next year, he could have the students do something even more foolish to show just how much control he had over them while under the curse.

Once it was all sunk into their minds, Professor Styx turned his eyes to the student, and he inquired, "Tell the class how you felt while under the curse, so they will know." Once the student was finished, he nodded at them to tell them that they were finished. He continued on with the lesson, "This curse is not unblockable. It can be resisted even after being cast, and it can be blocked using certain shielding charms. Your ability to block it by either method is very dependent upon the strength of your will against it, and for the latter your magical ability. However, none of you will be able to block the curse in any manner as of yet. For assisting us, you," his eyes on the student that helped him demonstrate, "have earned your house an additional ten points." Professor Styx thought that it was reasonable considering how the student had to make a fool of themselves anyway. "I want a detailed essay on the Imperius curse, and the effects. This is to be due next week. Class is dismissed." The doors opened to let the students go out and finished up their homework up. Profesosr Styx went behind his desk and finish up on some other things that he had to do.

Assignment: Roleplay the lesson and do the homework assigned. First poster, be the student that is put under the curse.

Since signing the consent form for Professor Styx last week, October's heart hadn't stopped racing every time she thought about Defense Against the Dark Arts. Part of her worried that it was a mistake, that volunteering to be the subject of a spell deemed unforgivably awful by law was dangerous and reckless, but she had done it now, and didn't intend to back down. Arriving early she took her seat, resisting an uncharacteristic urge to fidget while she waited for class to start. Even the stress of exams last semester didn't compare with how anxious October felt now.

Her heart raced with fear as Professor Styx arrived and began the lesson. Her mouth was dry and her hands felt shaky. When Professor Styx gestured to her there was a brief, terrified moment in which every instinct in October's mind told her to bolt, to run and not stop. But she was in class, with a teacher. She had volunteered, in the interest of learning what this spell was really like, and she did not intend to go back on her word. Hiding her shaking hands behind her back, October stood up and approached the professor, feeling even smaller than she usually did. She took a nervous breath as she saw her teacher raise his wand, and was fighting the urge to scream in terror as the green bolt shot towards her...

...And then the world fell calm. What had October been so afraid of? This was wonderful - this was like a dream! Everything was so good. This was so nice. In the soft, haze of niceness that filled October's mind she heard from somewhere Professor Styx's voice saying she should jump on a desk. What a good idea! Then she wouldn't have to worry about feeling small anymore. October was well practiced at jumping high for ballet, and leaped up onto the desk with a flourish, standing tall with a proud grin having accomplished her task. This was so lovely, being so high up like this. What a brilliant idea that had been! October was still smiling when the voice relayed another absolutely brilliant idea to her. She was going to jump back down and do some push ups! October could do lots of push ups, she did them all the time for dance. Everyone would be so impressed. She quickly hopped back down off the desk and dropped to the ground, starting to do push ups. What a terrific idea!

October felt like she had barely started doing pushups when suddenly the rough floor of the classroom and the gazes of her peers and the embarrassing nature of everything she had been doing rushed into sharp relief. She jumped up, looking around in fear as all her senses came flooding back in at once. It was horrifying, not just how completely she had been under her teacher's control, but how easy it had been, how no part of her brain had even considered resisting such silly demands. The thought of what someone with crueler intentions could force people to do with such a spell was absolutely terrifying, and October scurried back to her desk, embarrassed and frightened. Her hand continued to shake for the rest of the class, struggling a little to write down the homework assignment. It was a relief when they were allowed to leave, and October didn't think she had ever left a room so fast in her life, desperate to get away from the prying eyes of her peers.

Last week Tristan Collins had sat next to Corrine in class. She hadn't been able to react at the time, but after class, everything kept going through her head. The smile he'd given her, his voice so very near, and glancing at him in her periphery whenever she could. It had been a little overwhelming to say the least. He'd given no intention if this was a one time thing or not, though Corrine knew it didn't mean much. She had seen Tristan talking to plenty of other people, older, younger, all the different houses. He was just one of those guys.

As the lesson began, Corrine began to jot down notes on the Imperius curse. She wondered which student had volunteered, and soon discovered it was October. Watching her head to the front of the room with a frown on her face, Corrine wondered what the professor would make her do. She knew of the effects of the spell but had obviously never seen it in action and was a bit surprised that it was allowed. Sometimes she wondered about this school and the things that were taught.

Watching October twirl like a ballerina, Corrine only just contained an eye roll. Of course she was great at it. October seemed like the kind of girl who was great at everything. Even exercise as it turned out. She was the kind of girl Corrine wished she could hate except that she was also kind and smart so it was pretty darn impossible. Happy when it was all finally over, Corrine frowned again as she watched the professor. He hadn't seemed to enjoy it, but considering this was what he chose to do rather than a lecture on the curse, she couldn't help but wonder if he'd enjoyed it. Packing up, Corrine wondered what he'd do for the other unforgiveables.

After being back for a week, Tristan was feeling right back at home at Hogwarts. He was excited for Valentine's day that was coming up, already looking forward to the roses he would receive and the ball. He was planning to go with Kauri, though he would have asked October instead if he thought he made a chance with her. For now, Kauri was fine though.

Not even the idea of Valentine's day could alter Tristan's focus on his classes, though. He wanted to be the best in his year, though October gave him a run for his money in most classes. He sought her out as he entered the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom, though he made sure to shoot Corrine a smile as he passed. For some reason, the Ravenclaw seemed nervous. He couldn't figure it out until the proefssor reminded them they would be learning about the Imperius Curse. Was she afraid of seeing an Unforgivabl curse in front of her? She hadn't seem the type to be squeamish before. But then Professor Styx lookedright at her and told her to come up there, and Tristan finally understood.

His own consent form had remained empty and in his dormitory, as he had decided against filling it in eventually. The loss of control in front of classmates seemed to harsh a price to pay for some acknowledgement by a professor that would probably not remember his name anyway. But somehow, he hadn't expected October to volunteer.

He watched with some horror as the spell was placed on her and she was made to do things. It wasn't funny, even if the motions she was doing was silly. There was an undeniable dark undertone, and a part of him hoped she would resist every time he commanded her to do something. When the curse was lifted, he looked away. Feeling embarrassed for her. He took a few notes on what the professor said after, then noted down the homework.

Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson 2

The Imperius curse is one of the three curses classified as Unforgivable . Someone under the influence of this curse will be at the mercy of the caster, as they are compelled to obey their every command. They will act out the orders without question or reasoning. The victim does not feel bad under the curse, as it doesn't feel unpleasant while it is happening. It's only after the curse has been lifted that the person feels any real feelings about their actions while under the curse. The curse can be resisted after being cast on a person. The ability to resist has to do with your strength of will, as well as your magical ability. Not many people are able to resist the curse at all, and the ones that can have to train themselves to do it. Students of our age wouldn't be able to resist it.

Questioning Everything | Honeydukes Assistant | fifth year

[justify]Jerara was left in a bit of a jam, the rose celebration had never mattered so much to him, well, it wasn’t really that it mattered so much to him but more he had to make the right choice with Ellie, what if he sent her a rose she wasn’t happy with, or it didn’t say the right thing. Jerra couldn’t say he was good at grand gestures of love that this would then be. He had gone with a pink rose and hoped that it plus the message inside would make up for anything that wasn’t part of the rose. The boy had never had to actually offer anything like that before, never in a serious capacity, so it felt nice but he was ultimately just nervous about it. However, he also didn’t have much time to waste to being nervous, certainly he was learning that doing all of the classes was a lot of work, and it took up a large chunk of his time. He didn’t have much time to spare or remember to do other things. Of course, so long as he worked hard during this week he would find the time to spare to go to the dance he just had to work hard. So without much further thought the boy packed up his things and left the dorm for the class.

Jerara was very excited about this lesson of defence against the dark arts, he knew what would happen in this class and though it wouldn't be done with him, he was still very much looking forward to what he might see during the class. Jerara eagerly took his seat in the room and let his gaze sit at the front of the room the few moments before the class itself got started. Jerara watched as the professor brought up October to do the curse to. It was interesting to watch her do that. It was curious to see that she just did it so willingly. The boy couldn't help but wonder what it felt like to do that to someone. To cast such a spell and see it's effects on someone. He was so enthralled by it. He didn't think he'd want to loose control like that in class, but he wanted to make someone else do so. He listened to what October said about how it felt, being sure to write that down, as well as the additional information that the professor was giving. He took a note of the homework and headed to the library to do a little more reading on it.

[justify]The second week of classes were upon her, and Signy was looking forward to the prospect of being able to give out roses at the end of the week, it was something she’d been doing for a couple of years now, she just found it so nice to do. It was a little gesture that she was sure went a long way for most people around here. It was just such a good thing to do for people such an easy thing too. The girl was looking forward to it, and she was sure it would be the highlight of her week to do so. She had an outfit for it already planned and one planned for the well deserved party afterwards. Well, the ball that was after it. She thought about asking if Xavier wanted to go with her, but she figured that he probably wouldn’t want to and she was a little nervous to ask him too. But she’d see him after it, and could still enjoy the evening. Signy was getting herself ready for the school day. Putting her books into her bag and then getting the homework and everything else she would need for the day, till she was all ready and able to leave for the class.

Signy had not been looking forward to the next lesson of defence against the dark arts classroom. She sighed heavily as she stepped into the room and took her usual spot in the room. She glanced up at the professor and couldn't help her disappointment that they really were going to be continue to learn about the unforgivable curses. There wasn't going to be anything good about it. She watched as one of the ravenclaw girls was made to go under the spell. She had probably signed the consent form for it, but the hufflepuff couldn't imagine anything worse about it. Having to suffer in front of everyone. She watched it though, with a little curiousity as the girl was made the preform tasks that the professor set on them. Signy had her quill and books out ready for the second part of the lesson, where they would be able to learn more about the spell itself. She was attentive to how it was, it felt according to her and then what the professor said about the spell. It wasn't a good spell, she couldn't imagine what it felt like and hoped she would never. With that and knowing that this was likely the easiest of the three to both learn about and see.
