Professor Styx was leaning against his desk, the windows were covered by shades to give the room a darker feeling. He preferred the darker environments, and the subject that he was going to be teaching them this year was surely a dark subject as well. Professor Styx waited for the fourth years to arrive though the open doors, and once they were all seated, he counted heads and took role. They were going to just go over the curriculum of this year today, so there would be no need to have them take out wands or quills unless they feel the need to do so. Once they were all silenced, the doors closed and the lesson began. "This year, we will be focusing on the Unforgivable Curses, examples and theories that goes along with them as well." The former Death Eater assumed that they would know what these curses had done, and what they are capable of. Professor Styx started off, "This will be reviewing of what was taught in your first year, so you will have no excuses to not know these questions. Let's begin, who remind the class how many Unforgivable Curses there are?" One student raised their hand, and Professor Styx nodded at them to give out the answer which was correct. "Correct. What are the incantations for each?" He gestured to another student to answer the question. Once that was also answered correctly, he continued on, "Finally, what does each curse do?" He motioned for a student to answer that did not raise their hand, and they answered correctly as well. The Slytherin Head of House folded his arms across his chest and he paused for a moment seeing that some students were taking notes which he did not see the point in. "Next lesson, we will learn about the Imperius Curse, and if you wish to assist with the class with a presentation of the curse, see me after class for a consent form. You may leave." Professor Styx waved his hand at the doors and they opened to allow the students to leave the class. He had other classes to teach as well, and get ready for. For the first time ever, Odette hadn't celebrated Christmas at home. It had been strange to stay at school, but not entirely unpleasant. At least she'd had a lot of time to be alone, which is what she preferred at the moment. Things were confusing enough without others making it worse. Her encounter with Harley was never far from her mind, and the embarrassing scene she had made in front of Professor Pendleton wasn't either. She still hated that she had cried in front of him, it had made her look weak. One professor she would never cry in front of was Professor Styx, her head of house. She had no illusions about how much he would care about her personal problems. Perhaps that made him not the best head of house in Hogwarts, but she was kind of glad he wasn't a meddling busybody. If she wanted support from a professor, she would go look for it. Just perhaps not this one. She took her seat in the back of the class and leaned her head on her hand as she listened to the professor. She didn't bother raising her hand for the questions, she didn't feel like trying so hard. Lately, she just didn't see the point. She took a few notes, but she actually remembered the curses pretty well. With a sigh, she noted down they would learn about the Imperius Curse next week. She didn't really feel like assisting, so she didn't even glance at the consent form. That just sounded like trouble to her. Shouldering her bag, she |

It was always nice to come back to the castle aftet the holidays. She almost always had a fun time at home. Her parents often held parties leading up to the New Year, and this year had been no exception. She'd returned to New Zealand only just in time to rush around and purchase her schoolbooks and then heading to the castle. Listening as Professor Styx began his lecture, Corrine was happy to hear they'd be reviewing for the first lesson. She raised her hand and replied when she was called on. "Three" she stated easily, her accent soft on the word. She was content to remain silent the rest of the lesson. Corrine hadn't become more studious or anything but she knew that it was smart to start the semester on the right foot. Although the idea of something that would require her parent's consent intrigued her, Corrine wasn't sure she trusted Professor Styx enough to participate. So she walked past the few of her classmates who remained behind. She was brave but not that brave. |

Being back at school and in the magical world always felt like a relief to Tristan Collins. More and more, the muggle world felt like a trap, something that constricted him. He couldn't be himself there, he no longer fit in. But here he did. He was good at his classes, had friends, a boyfriend (or rather, two), and just generally did well. He felt confident about himself, and was reasonably sure he had a good reputation. Defence Against the Dark Arts always seemed like an important subject to him. He entered the classroom and looked around, wondering where to sit. He smiled as he spotted Corrine, he had promised to sit next to her sometime hadn't he? He sat down next to her and gave her a smile before looking at the front of the class. He raised his hand at the first question, but his neighbor got picked instead. Thankfully, he could make up for that with the second question. "Crucio, Imperio, and Avada Kedavra." He said calmly. Tristan noted down that they would cover the Imperus Curse in the next lesson, and considered the consent form. It didn't seem like something he wanted to do, but it would probably at least score him some points. He sighed and took a form. Maybe he would consider it. Then he left the classroom. |

Quite asides from its necessity to be prepared in a potentially hostile wizarding world, there was something strangely fascinating about Defense Against the Dark Arts to October. As much as she didn't want to think about it, the lengths of what you could do to someone with magic were really incredible. She took her usual seat at the front of the classroom and got her things ready to take notes, wondering which facets of dark magic they would be covering this year. As long as there was nothing else on dark creatures, she was excited to learn it. When Professor Styx began to speak, October was quickly intrigued. She had done a little bit of reading about Unforgivable Curses in the past, and it would be fascinating to find out exactly what made them so unforgivable. She took notes as Professor Styx spoke, too distracted for once by her notes to raise her hands for the questions. It was a pleasant surprise to be selected for the final question, and October spoke up quickly. "The Cruciatus Curse is a form of torture, it inflicts extreme pain on the target. The Imperius Curse is a mind control spell, it forces the victim to do whatever the person who cast the spell wants. And the Killing Curse... kills the target." Thinking about something so morbid was nerve-wracking and October returned to her notes quickly. It really piqued her interest though, when he asked for a volunteer for next week. Did that mean what she thought it did? Unable to resist her curiosity, October's heart raced with nerves as she made her way up to the professor to ask for a consent form. Surely if it was anything truly dangerous, they wouldn't be doing it in a school, and the curiosity of what that would feel like was too much. |

Being with Ellie had given Jerara ample things to think about. He found her of course interesting, she was a loving and warm soul, he loved the way she smiled, but he was faced with the knowledge that she would soon be out of the school, and they would have to decide what to do. He knew that was still a whole year and a half away but he couldn’t help but think about it. Jerara was not much of a free spirit in that sense, he always made sure to find what he needed to, and he could just dig deeper with books, but a relationship that was far trickier. The boy was reading at that moment, having woken up early to get a head start on the reading for this semester. He had a good number of classes, as he always did, but he knew that this year was important, it would give him the foundation for his OWLs, which he needed to do well in. Jerara would accept nothing less than perfect, he would prove himself and learn all he could. However, upon realising the time the teen put down the current book and put the books he would need for the week into his bag before leaving the room. Jerara walked into the defence against the dark arts classroom and was pretty eager to find out what they might be doing in that lesson. What they would be covering over the semester, he always found that he enjoyed Defence against the dark arts class though it was somewhat limiting. The teen looked up at the professor as the man got started. Telling them that they would be studying the unforgivable curses. These were things that had been briefly touched upon before, but Jerara was keen to know what they were really like. To learn more about them. He listened as others answered questions about what each of them were. About what they did, all of which didn't sound pleasant but boy was Jerara curious about them. Not so curious as to want the curse of control placed on him by the professor, but certainly it was something he would maybe want to try at some point. Just to see. Or even to cast it. Surely there were cases when it was allowed? Surely there was a little grey area surrounding it, why would they learn indepth about them if there wasn't. They strayed away from most other dark spells. With that however the lesson was brought to an end and he left the room. |

Working hard had always been a strong suit of Signy’s and it had been good over the last few years at Hogwarts, her mother always asked her to try harder and do better, but Signy was happy with the amount of work she put in and the results from it. She didn’t have many high hopes for after school so it didn’t altogether matter how well she did. The girl was excited to be back at school and was already looking forward to spending more time with Xavier, and she was looking forward to the roses too. It was her favourite part of the school. Hands down. The teen was getting ready for the day, brushing her long blonde hair. Putting it up and out of the way of her eyes. She put on her uniform and began putting all the necessary books back into her bag. She sorted through the important ones and the ones she wouldn’t need for this first week and then left the dorm room heading for the first class she had that day. Signy was looking forward to all she would do during this semester, the work had been getting harder but it was satisfying to do well in them in the end and that was all she needed. Signy stepped into the defence against the dark arts class with a bright expression upon her face. She was certainly looking forward to this class and all that would be involved in it. Defence against the dark arts was a class she could work hard at and be good at. it also had useful spells. The teen looked up at the professor as the man got started telling them about the curses they would be learning about, and Signy was a little disappointed though she could agree that it was good to learn about such spells, she knew they wouldn't really get to practice them nor would they really learn to defend any more against them, so it wasn't particularly fun. The classes after this in defence against the dark arts would just not be fun. She listened to the questions by the professor and the answers given by the other students in the class about it. She wasn't looking forward to this semester now, it just wouldn't be fun. It would be necessary yeah, but fun nope. With that however the lesson was brought to an end and Signy packed up her things and left the room. She hoped that the other lessons wouldn't be too bad. |
