Professor Styx entered the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom earlier than the students, and he leaned against the desk. His arms folded across his chest and he opened the doors to allow the second years to enter the darker classroom with the windows blocked by shades. Professor Styx did not think that they would enjoy this class any longer. However, he would ensure that they all would learn however. He made sure that everyone was present before he said in his cold, monotone voice, "I am Professor Styx in case some of you all transferred in, and the rest of the students should remember me from the previous year. To begin, this year you will be learning the effects of prank-like jinxes." His thin lips almost curled up into a sneer when he thought of that, as he personally did not enjoy the effects and childishness that sometimes resulted in jinxes. "And you will also learn how to defend against them though many will be similar to last year." After explaining the syllabus of this year to the students, Professor Styx continued to remain where he was, and he continued, "Can anyone tell me what a curse is?" A student raised their hand, and Professor Styx gestured his gloved hand toward the student to allow them to continue. Once they answered the question correctly, he continued to question the students, "Now who can explain what a jinx is and the difference between it and a curse, if one applies?" Another student raised their hand and Professor Styx motioned for them to answer, and they got the question right as well. Now everyone should know what a jinx and a curse is. The former Death Eater turned to the blackboard and the chalk wrote up their homework which was list three curses and three jinxes as well as their effects. After the chalk finished, it dropped to the holder, and Professor Styx turned his eyes to the class. "I want you to copy this down, and turn it in to me by your next lesson. You are dismissed." Professor Styx waved his hand at the doors and they parted open to allow the students to leave the classroom. Professor Styx watched them leave, and thought that they should be thankful that the assignment was all that they received. Luckily, he was in a good mood enough to not torture them - for now at least. Assignment: Roleplay the lesson, and do the homework assigned. You all should know the proper heading to use.Defence Against the Dark Arts,2,1 |

The Christmas Holidays were over, and it was time for Fleur to head back to school. She enjoyed being at Howarts, but she had also been glad to be home for a bit. It was still strange to go to school in a different country, and she had missed her siblings quite a bit. It had been nice to be able to tell her family about what she had learned at Hogwarts during the year, though it was a shame she wasn't allowed to actually do any of the magic outside of classes. Defence Against the Dark Arts was one of the better classes, in Fleur's opinion, at least based on the lessons from the previous year. Professor Styx was a grump, but the topics they covered wre pretty interesting. Fleur took her seat and listened as the professor started to speak. It was fun that they would learn about prank-like jinex, though the professor hardly tried to hide his distaste. At the professor's first question, Fleur raised her hand reluctantly. She wasn't expected to be picked, and cursed herself for trying to participate when she was. "A curse is like, a bad spell, right?" She said with a shrug. "A spell used to hurt someone, the kind of stuff we're going to be learning to defend against." She lowered her hand and sighed. Maybe it wasn't the best answer, but she figured she had the basics down. She listened to another student explain the difference between a jinx and a curse, which she wouldn't have known, and took a few notes. Then she wrote down the homework and gathered her things when they were dismissed. Slinging her bag over her shoulder, Fleur left the classroom with her fellow Gryffindors. |

Len her holiday had been lovely and Len was sad to leave home, but Hogwarts was fun as well. Defense Against the Dark Arts was not her favourite subject and Len dreaded to go back. She didn't want to hear about bad people that did bad things. Nor did she want to defend against them, Aurors should be there to do that not Len. The Professor made the subject more fun and that was one of the reasons Len still went. Although he looked like something that ran out of a horror movie he knew his stuff. Len arrived at the classroom and seated herself. The Professor started to speak about the outline of this year. Len was scared that they were learning jinxes. What if people wanted to try them on other students, that would be dangerous right. Len looked up and wrote the information down. The first question was answered by Fleur. Who slept in a dorm with her, Len smiled and was happy for her. At least it meant more points for Gryffindor. The second question was for Len. Her hand couldn't go any higher, she was still as small as a child. ''A Jinx is somewhat milder than a curse, the damage done by a jinx isn't lasting and a curse is usually way worse.'' Len was right and she smiled, it meant more points for Gryffindor. When the homework was called the lesson ended and Len was glad she had contributed something in this class. |

Athena was ready for another semester at Hogwarts, especially now that she had improved her grades and the success of her plan from last semester put her in the best possible mood you could find the girl in. She arrived to the dorms and quickly gathered her books for Defence before she made her way to the classroom, hopeful to take a seat in the front as usual. Perfect. There were still a few seats available. Despite her liking what they were learning in the subject, Athena had not missed her head of house although she had to admit he was a good professor. But she tried not to let his gaze and the tone of his voice get to her as he began the lesson. Athena tried putting up her hand but annoyingly enough she wasn't picked - not getting attention in class was something she was not used to and it aggravated her. It didn't matter that much in the end she knew, because it was only the first week back, but still. The people who had been picked weren't even in her house. In all of this the Slytherin didn't forget to write down notes in detail, and when the homework was given out Athena wrote it down and packed up as they were dismissed. She nodded once towards the professor with a small smile as she left. |

As Frankie made her way into the Defence classroom after a whole year after a whole year of not having stepped foot in it, she looked around at the unforgettable darkened environment with something that was almost like nostalgia and lifted the corner of her mouth in private amusement at the sight of Professor Styx standing grumpily at the head of the classroom once again. She had almost missed the unique experience of being taught in this classroom, she thought as she slid into a seat, though she was sure the sentiment wouldn't last for long once they actually got started with the lessons. Styx was particularly fond of essays - and Frankie hated them. Writing large amounts of words was something she had always found herself spectacularly bad at concentrating on, let alone doing in any way that was considered 'good.' If they could practice more practical types of defence this year, that would be much preferred in her mind. Not long after she had arrived, being one of the usual last-minute stragglers, Frankie was keen to hear that they would be learning about prank spells - that sounded awesome. Sure it was defence against them that they were supposed to be concentrating on, but she already knew that she was absolutely going to figure out how to perform every one of the jinxes that would be mentioned and try them out on willing participants. This was the whole point of magic to Frankie; if you couldn't do anything interesting with it then what was the point? Some questions were asked, but she didn't bother raising a hand to answer them. She vaguely knew the difference herself, but not enough to constitute giving anyone else a helpful answer, and was pleased to nod along and have each definition clarified for her by other girls in her house. Giving Fleur a quick thumbs up for her attempt Frankie settled back into paying attention, but quickly wished she hadn't. Homework, right on the first day - Styx clearly wasn't messing around. Frankie wished he would once in a while as that would definitely be a sight to see. She snorted at the thought. Scribbling down '3 jinxes effects,' on a scrap of paper she'd ripped from something in her bag, Frankie shoved that and the pen she'd used into her robe pocket and strode merrily from the classroom. She could worry about all of that later. |

After having seen her schedule for this semester, Lucinda regarded the Defence Against the Dark Arts class as her only refuge from the stupidity she would have to take part in during the rest of her classes in the remainder of the year. However, it had become one of her well-favoured subjects regardless, and as Lucinda entered the classroom she was once again noted with approval the dark interior Professor Styx was fond of. Her head of house was easily the only authority in this school she really respected, and she was certain that fact had an impact on her enjoyment of learning the subject. But Lucinda also knew that interesting things were mentioned in this class, and she hoped she'd get to hear more of the same this year. It seemed she was to be in luck - or sort of, at least. Professor Styx didn't seem too enthused about teaching them about jinxes, but Lucinda was already thinking ahead to all the situations she would be able to use them in. There were so many annoying people in this school, she'd be happy to jinx them properly for encroaching into her space without asking. Her hand shot up immediately to answer the question, but Professor Styx didn't pick her - nor did he pick her to answer the next. Miffed, Lucinda narrowed her eyes slightly and folded her arms together, particularly as she had to listen to that short pathetic Gryffindor girl answer instead. Reaffirming that particular grudge mollified her though, and Lucinda made a note of the homework without much fuss. She would be interested to look these things up anyway, she thought as she swung her bag onto her shoulder and left the classroom. |
