Professor was prepared for this day, this first lesson for the OWL levels. She opened the door so the fifth year could all pile into the classroom and begin the first lesson. This year was a big year for them and she hoped she would do well in teaching them and preparing them for the exam at the end of the semester. "Haere mai*, come in, kia ora* fifth years, welcome back to another year of Astronomy! I hope you are all ready for learning," she said as the students sat in their seats, using the native language greetings she used while teaching at a muggle school. She was glad it was the summer and bringing them out to the lawn wouldn't be as cold had she stepped in during the first semester. "I understand this is a very big year with exams for you so we are going to jump right into learning this semester. Please follow me out to the lawn!" She said while she gathered up the tools she would need to demonstrate for the students. "Star charts, these are what we will be studying today. Now, the idea of following the stars and their patterns is very old, I'm sure all of you are aware of that. They once were used to predict different times of the year, so you could plant crops and harvest them. But, they are very useful if you are traveling, and traveling by say broom, as you all are too young to apparate," Sarah said with a little laugh. Pulling out her star chart she held it above her head towards the sky. "Now, don't feel silly but this is how you'll aligned yourself with the stars. Face south and then hold the map up, so that the North horizon is towards your back. Should you want to face another way, say east," Sarah said turning herself in that direction. "You'll want to make sure you turn your map, so it always stays the same, not turning with you," Sarah said demonstrating as she turned the piece of paper above her head back in her hands so it was above her head the way it had been when she was facing south. "Now try to practice finding constellations to relate to your position and then turn in another direction and do the same, you'll notice the sky has many more stars than are on your charts, so take care when trying to find the stars you are looking for in the sky and I'm here to help anyone who needs it," Sarah said hoping the students would get a hang of the star charts fairly easily. Most of the students seemed to do fairly well and she was pleased with them. Once the time for the lesson was ended she sent them back to their dorms without homework so they would focus on the charts during the week in preparation for the rest of the semester. Flavio felt a considerable amount of awkward as he walked into his first astronomy class of the year a few steps behind November. Knowing that her aunt was teaching at Hogwarts was intimidating enough on its own, but also learning that the woman now taught all the years of astronomy which included the class he was sitting in that day was a level of uncomfortable he did not know he would ever experience while in school. It was not any fault of the professor herself, and just a fault of the circumstances but he could not help but feel odd about sitting in classes taught by someone in his girlfriend's family who would likely be judging him for the entire semester and the rest of his time at school if he chose to continue astronomy. It made him want to work hard yet avoid the class entirely all at once because the pressure was too much. But he knew that no matter how he felt he did need to treat the lesson that day like all of his other classes and focus on his learning because that is why he was there in the first place. Flavio chose a seat near the front of the room although only momentarily as the professor soon lead the class out to the great lawn. He followed along with the class, paying attention as the professor began to talk about the relevance of star charts. Flavio had the star chart he had purchased during the holidays with him in the lesson and brought it out as the professor demonstrated how to use the chart. He aligned the map properly in the same way she showed the class, making sure he did not turn it with him as he moved around. He spent the rest of the lesson attempting to find the constellations on the map, only stopping to put the star chart away when the lesson was dismissed. Flavio then left the great lawn alongside November, wondering what he would learn in his next lesson. |

Amber still sometimes forgot the yule ball had really happened, that it wasn't a dream. Now that she was back at school, it was easy to get back into the normal routine. The biggest difference now was that she had Ainsley as a girlfriend. It made her very happy to call her that, and she was excited to see what the future would bring for them. She headed into the Astronomy classroom, eager to find out what they were going to learn. She had seen the professor around before, but this was the first time she actually had a lesson from her. Amber gave her a smile as she found her seat near the front, taking out her supplies to take notes with. But then she immediately had to put them away again as they had to go out into the lawn. She furrowed her brow but followed Professor Harrington along with the rest of the class. Once they were outside, the professor explained they would be studying star charts. Amber tried to remember the information the professor gave as it was hard to take notes outside. She watched as the professor took out her star chart and held it up to the sky. She told them to do the same, so after a moment Amber took out her own star chart. As soon as the professor stopped talking, she started to try it for herself. It felt strange to hold the chart up into the sky like that, but she got the hang of it after a while. She spent the lesson trying to find different constellations on the map, though her arms felt sore when the lesson was over. She thanked the professor and then headed back to the dormitory. She was glad she had no extra homework to do. |
