Professor Kalif Styx
Member Avatar
Patriarch of the Zhefarovich Family, Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor, Slytherin Head of House, Former Death Eater, Legilimens, Occlumens

Professor Styx had entered his darkened classroom to see that he was right on time and all of the fifth years were already seated and ready for the lesson. Making sure that no one was here late, Profesosr Styx closed the doors with magic and he addressed the classroom with curses that he was sure that they would know about at this point, "We are discussing two curses, and why these curses are labelled as such and not mere jinxes. However the debate between the two being labeled as such are widely disputed as of right now." The chalkboard seemed to have a life of its own now, as it started to write down what he was going to be saying, just waiting on the key words. Professor Styx paused as he faced the class with his arms crossed over his chest.

"You'll be required to recollect the Jelly Legs Jinx from second year for this lesson, and once you have that in your mind, think about these two new curses; the Jelly-Fingers curse and the Sponge-Knees curse. The effects are rather obvious, as one causes the victim's fingers to become like jelly, and they are unable to grasp anything while the other causes the knees to become sponge-like and prohibit walking." The chalk barely kept up with how fast Professor Styx spoke to the class. Now this was more like an opinionated class once again with why this would be a curse and not a jinx. He decided to know what the class thought on what they would think on this debate. "Now, why are these two curses be considered more of a curse than a jinx wheras the Jelly-Legs Jinx is not considered a curse at all?" Professor Styx noticed that many students rose their hands. Professor Styx himself did not care, and he did not have an opinion on these matters.

Once he had called on two people who had shared their answers, Professor Styx nodded slightly to ensure that he too was listening to their opinions. Professor Styx said simply, "The theories are in speculation right now, and the clearly defined as either jinxes or curses but everybody seems to have different ideas as to why. I don't have my own theory about the two, as I simply just don't mind either way, a spell is a spell, and the effects are the same." Professor Styx shrugged lightly as he did not really care on how the Ministry applied things. It was as it was, and he did not care for the subject at all. "Your homework is studying for your OWLs. Dismissed." Professor Styx returned to his desk and the doors opened to free the students to do what they willed today.

Assignment: Roleplay the lesson. First two posters answer the question.

Fifth year was difficult for sure, but since Amber had dropped a couple of classes since the previous year, it didn't feel quite as bad to her as it could have. She was also very happy lately, as she was embracing and accepting who she really was. Defence Against the Dark Arts was still one of Amber's least favorite classes. She hadn't really started hating it until the previous year, when they had been taught about the unforgivable curses. It had been difficult for her to keep the subject, but she couldn't deny that it was an important one to have.

She took her seat in the front of the classroom, no longer jumpy about the door closing with magic. Professor Styx told them they were covering two curses today, though there was a debate on whether or not they should be labeled as jinxes. She took notes along with the chalkboard. She remembered the Jelly Legs Jinx and wondered why the Jelly Fingers spell would be a curse instead. Same with the Sponge-Knees curse as she also remembered the knees reversal jinx. She tried her best to keep up with both the chalk and the professor's lecture. For once, Amber didn't raise her hand as she had no idea. The whole curse or jinx thing started to feel a little arbitrary to her. Why was the Sponge Knees thing considered worse than Knee Reversal? It made no sense. But to argue about it seemed pointless. Funnily enough, Professor Styx seemed to have the same opinion.. A spell is as pell sounded logical to her. She was glad there was no extra homework aside from studying for their OWLs. That was more than enough work. She gathered her things and put them in her bag. Then she left the classroom with Ainsley.

[justify]Noemie had been going to the pitch increasingly often as the first game for her approached. She was nervous about it, not yet believing herself to be a good enough player, not thinking that she would manage to do well in the game. But usually when this happened, Noemie would resign herself to that fate, but with her grades also not improving in this all important year, she was driving herself more, practicing more, taking more shots, throwing and catching the ball, doing everything she could in the hopes of achieving a little more in the upcoming game. SO long as no one caught the snitch early. However, as she came in from the pitch, Noemie had to focus on her lessons. She gathered the clothes she would need and got changed after taking a quick shower, she had gotten fairly used to her routine, even with all the extra work she was doing, the base routine she had stayed the same. She would come in from being outside either running or quidditch, shower and then get ready and today was very clearly no different. The girl ran a hand through her auburn hair and gathered the last of what she would need before leaving the dorm.

Noemie walked into the defence against the dark arts class and took her seat. She felt very nervous about this class and the upcoming OWL with it. She didn't want to do badly in it, but she knew that the theory would definitely trip her up, she didn't want that, but things couldn't be helped really. She took out her notes and looked up at the professor at the front of the room as he began talking. They would doing more revision of curses, it was a tame year of this class, but she didn't mind after the last year she didn't really want to put her luck with it. The girl took her notes out and began writing down what the man was saying about the jelly fingers and sponge knees curse, both of which sounded less than fun. She didn't raise her hand to say anything, but listened as others gave their opinion on the matter. She had to agree with the professor, a spell was a spell, it didn't make it bad or good. She was glad with the notes she'd taken from the lesson as well as he own opinion on the matter. She packed up her things and left the room.

Sheltered and clueless | Chaser | Ollivanders Assistant

[justify]Rory’s school life was a little calmer when he didn’t go out actively seeking people to annoy, and when those who usually annoyed him appeared to stay largely out of his way. It was better for everyone, and though it didn’t mean he’d get any awards for his good behaviour he knew personally it was perhaps better just to ride this whole hogwarts thing out and instead focusing on getting himself some half decent grades he’d achieved on his own, or getting himself to be one of the best quidditch players in hogwarts. The slytherin was sat doing a piece of homework, which was odd, since even when he’d stopped going to Flavio or Annabelle for the work, he was still not really doing it himself, but he knew that since this was an important year that just maybe it would be benefical to do a little more work than he would usually do. Focusing heavily upon the classes he enjoyed and ignoring the ones he didn’t. There was no sense in going out of his way to be better. However, he stopped what he was doing when it was time to go to class. He bundled up the mostly finished work, and put it in his bag alongside everything else that he would need for the day and then left the class.

Rory walked into the defence against the dark arts class, as always with a slightly sheepish expression, he knew the head of slytherin house didn't like him, given his behaviour he could also understand why, but after all of it, Rory was desperate to not get into trouble again, as much as being kicked out of school would be great it wouldn't really change where his life was headed, upon that set path his parents had decided for him. He looked up at the professor as the man began his lesson, they would be revisiting certain curses, and he thought they all sounded like great fun to put on to other people, it would be interesting to watch but it didn't seem like they would be asking instead the professor briefly described them and then asked the class their opinion on their classification. He thought this was a little out of character for the professor who hated everything and likely didn't care about their opinion on the matter, but perhaps it was for the exam, where he had to treat things as impartial and people were meant to have opinions. In any case, Rory sat lazily in his chair, vaguely listening along until the class was brought to an end and he could leave.

Flavio Morales

Duckling • Ravenclaw Quidditch Captain & Chaser • 6th year • Gambol & Jape's Assistant

[justify]Flavio arrived to the defence against the dark arts classroom and chose his usual seat near the front of the room, which was where he sat as professor styx arrived to teach the lesson. Flavio prepared himself to take as many notes as possible and wrote down the Jelly legs jinx as the professor mentioned it, which he underlined and then listed the Jelly fingers curse and the sponge knees curse. Clearly both of the new curses they were learning about were similar to the Jelly legs jinx from second year and Flavio did not want to leave that information out in case it was mentioned in his exam. He then wrote the effect of the jelly fingers curse, finding it interesting although slightly surprising that jelly fingers meant the spell was a curse and jelly legs were defined differently. After that Flavio wrote down the effect of the sponge knees curse, also finding it interesting how both curses were defined as curses. Evidently there must have been some form of history surrounding both curses that caused them to be considered as curses as opposed to jinxes.

The professor soon asked the class why the spells were considered curses and two students were called upon to answer. Flavio wrote all of what was said down, still considering the answer himself despite not saying it aloud. A spell with a similar effect being seen as more of a joke than something largely harmful did not make much sense. But he did agree that all of them were spells and should be treated as such. Soon after Flavio wrote his final thoughts down, Professor styx dismissed the class. Flavio packed up his belongings to spend the rest of his day studying defence against the dark arts in the library, intending to read ahead so he was prepared for later lessons.
