Professor Kalif Styx
Member Avatar
Patriarch of the Zhefarovich Family, Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor, Slytherin Head of House, Former Death Eater, Legilimens, Occlumens

Professor Styx was pacing the front of the room when the fifth years had entered the classroom today. At least today they were going to be learning something that they did not know about this year. Professor Styx stopped pacing and stood in front of his desk, with his arms relaxed over his chest. The doors closed when it was time to settle in and allow the lesson to begin. He studied each of their faces, his mood not as foul as it was before and one would be able to tell that he was just back into this stone cold persona. "Fifth years, we will be discussing the Gemino Curse," Professor Styx looked over the faces to see who has read through their books and who has not. Seeing that it was rather obvious, Professor Styx would continue onto this very different type of curse that the class would be lucky to not encounter as it could be a fatal curse.

"This is different from the curses that you have learned awhile back. The reason being is because it does not necessarily cause direct harm to a person, and it cannot be cast onto a person. This curse causes, when used on an object, to multiply once touched, though the copies are all useless." The chalk seemed to have sprung to life and started to write down what Professor Styx was saying, to allow students to copy it down for notes. "This spell, may not seem like a very interesting or even useful curse alas, it is used as a defence for valuable items in Gringotts vaults. This spell should not be confused with Geminio which duplicates the targeted object as Geminio is not a curse, and it makes a double in appearance, and any magical effects it contains will not be duplicated. The doubling charm has the same name, yet, how to make it into a curse is a special case."

The chalk fell lifeless once more. Professor Styx seemed done with the lesson however he did have something up his sleeve. Professor Styx concluded, "I want an essay about this curse, and see why it could be dangerous. Remember the whole bit about Gringotts as well. I want this done by the time the next lesson begins. You may leave." The doors opened to allow the students to leave. Professor Styx was done with the lesson, and he wondered if anyone would think that the curse could in fact kill, crush or whatnot, but would they be smart enough to think of how? Only time would tell.

Assignment: Roleplay the lesson and do the homework assigned.

Ainsley wondered if the sense of unease she got approaching the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom would ever ease. It was just an uncomfortable, unsettling place to be. She took her usual seat with Amber, getting her things ready to take notes before Professor Styx began lecturing. She took careful notes as he spoke, relieved that she had taken the time to read ahead in their book. She had read a little about this curse, and unlike the kinds of things they usually studied, Ainsley actually found this one fascinating. She could certainly see how it could be... unpleasant to be subjected to, but the way it worked was really interesting, and she wondered what other kinds of applications it could have.

She took careful notes as Professor Styx spoke, noting the difference between Gemino and Geminio carefully. It seemed like an easy mixup to make, and not a mistake Ainsley was interested in repeating. It surprised her to hear that this was how valuables were protected in Gringotts, but thinking about the trouble it could cause a bank robber in case they opened one of the vaults, it made sense to her. Once Professor Styx was done with his lecture Ainsley took note of what the homework was and packed up her things, curious to do some more reading about this spell while she wrote her essay.

Amber was having a strange week. Saying some things out loud had lifted a weight off her chest she hadn't known was there, but it had also brought new scary things along with it. Talking to Clem had been hard, talking to Ainsley even harder. And while she was working on accepting herself, she couldn't help but wonder what anyone else would think. If she ever were to date a girl openly, everyone would know. Evelyn would probably think it was strange, November may be very mean about it... and who knew what others would think.

Amber took her seat next to Ainsley, giving her a small smile before focusing her attention to the front of the classroom where Professor Styx started explaining the Geminio Curse. She had read ahead and knew what the curse was about, though she had never heard of it before reading about it. It was a strange curse, but she copied the notes on the blackboard onto her own parchment. It made sense that this curse would be used for valuable items in a vault. She took notes until the chalk fell back down. The homework was an essay about this curse, and she wrote it down in her planner, underlining it.

Defence Against the Dark Arts Lesson 3

The Gemino Curse curse is different from the spell by the nearly
same name. Geminio the spell duplicates a targeted object, while the curse causes objects to duplicate with useless copies of itself with a simple touch. It's easy to see how the curse variant of this spell could be harmful and even fatal, which is why it is called a curse. It's often used in Gringotts vaults as a way to protect the valuables inside. If a person were to try stealing galleons that kept duplicating with useless copies, it's possible they could get buried and hurt by the metal appearing around them. This is even more easy to imagine with heavier or bigger objects. One could even place sharp blades around an desired object which seem easy to move by hand, only to have them duplicate if any thief tries and fill up the room around them.

[justify]After feeling uncomfortable about his recent transfiguration lesson, Flavio was almost relieved to be attending a defence against the dark arts lesson. Though the class was studying curses that year they at least weren't casting the curses on unsuspecting, defenseless animals and that thought was enough to make him feel slightly comfortable as he walked into the classroom. He chose a seat near the front of the room as usual and got out parchment and his self inking quill to take notes as professor styx spoke. The man said the class would be learning about the gemino curse that day and Flavio had read ahead in his book enough to know about the curse itself.

A piece of chalk wrote down everything professor styx said on the blackboard and Flavio took notes on what was written, writing that it was a curse that cannot be directly cast on a person instead causing objects to multiply once touched. He also noted down that it was similar to geminio but making it have a curse like effect is something unique. Flavio pondered what exactly would make the spell a curse and then thought about objects multiplying in a small room causing a person to suffocate or poisoned or dangerous objects multiplying. It made sense how the spell could be used as a curse but was of course interesting as the curse itself was still not completely direct. He wondered if someone that used gemino to hurt someone else would be caught as the spell could be used for mundane purposes too. Though the ravenclaw did not have much more time to think about the curse as the lesson was soon dismissed and a homework task was assigned. Flavio wrote down the homework task before packing up his belongings and leaving the room. He spent the remainder of his day in the library reading ahead on other curses in his book hoping to prepare himself for his next lesson.

Part-Veela | Chaser | Hogwarts Monthly Writer & Assistant Editor | Heta Omega Secretary

[justify]The part-veela was looking forward to the celebration at the end of the week, the work for her had felt non-stop, she had been doing a lot to ensure that she was ahead in her classes, an all new attempt to push up her grades. Though in the first week she had decided she didn’t entirely need to, this being her OWL year she had felt like just maybe she had to. Just try her hardest, the grades only needed to go up a little and she had been consistent in her grades so far. Noemie was doing her cool down stretches in the dorm room, it had began raining and she had decided to finish off her run by doing all the steps up to the ravenclaw dorm room. She shook her body a little as she finished that off and got into the shower. She was looking forward to the halloween feast that was coming up, a little something to do that wasn’t school or even quidditch. Noemie took a quick shower before getting ready for the school day ahead of her. She was looking forward to what the day would bring her, was equally as eager for it. She would prove herself, of course she would.

Noemie walked into the defense against the dark arts classroom and took her usual spot in the room, glancing towards the front of the classroom as the man got started. She was just eager to get started, sure enough, as soon as most had taken their seat. Noemie was curious about what they would be learning in this class and pulled her notes forward as soon as the man told them what they would covering. The gemino curse sounded interesting, dangerous but interesting. She couldn't imagine ever having to use it, but she could see herself maybe if she had things she desperately needed to protect but Noemie certainly didn't have any of that currently. She could see how it would be useful in a bank, where people did usually opt to send things they wished to protect, so there was an extra layer of it. She watched as the professor told them more about it before wrapping up the lecture, though these classes tended to be quite short, it wasn't like they didn't learn anything during them. She always left more curious than when she got to it. She took a note of the homework before leaving for the library to do more work.

Sheltered and clueless | Chaser | Ollivanders Assistant

[justify]Rory’s school life was a little calmer when he didn’t go out actively seeking people to annoy, and when those who usually annoyed him appeared to stay largely out of his way. It was better for everyone, and though it didn’t mean he’d get any awards for his good behaviour he knew personally it was perhaps better just to ride this whole hogwarts thing out and instead focusing on getting himself some half decent grades he’d achieved on his own, or getting himself to be one of the best quidditch players in hogwarts. The slytherin was sat doing a piece of homework, which was odd, since even when he’d stopped going to Flavio or Annabelle for the work, he was still not really doing it himself, but he knew that since this was an important year that just maybe it would be beneficial to do a little more work than he would usually do. Focusing heavily upon the classes he enjoyed and ignoring the ones he didn’t. There was no sense in going out of his way to be better. However, he stopped what he was doing when it was time to go to class. He bundled up the mostly finished work, and put it in his bag alongside everything else that he would need for the day and then left the class.

Rory walked into the defence against the dark arts classroom and took a seat in the room, his gaze shifting to the front of the room as he sat down. The lesson got started shortly after he'd sat down, and his attention was kept on the professor at the front as the man got started. They were going to be covering a curse that Rory was familiar with, they had used it for a few of the items that belonged to his family, not too many but certainly enough objects that Rory had seen the curse be preformed and had the audacity to touch one of the objects at the insistence of his older cousin. It had been a whole deal with his family, but given that he did know about it, he didn't feel the need to write any of it down, instead just vaguely listening along until the professor wrapped up the lesson and let them go. He made a mental note of the homework, but he knew he wasn't going to do it, there was just no way that he was going to do it. He packed up his things and left the classroom.
