Professor Styx was in the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom earlier than the rest of the first years. They were going to be arriving at once point. Professor Styx leaned against the desk and he stared at the open doors to see that some of the first years had arrived, and this was another lecture that they were going to have to endure. They were all soon seated and then they were going to be learning more about the Dark Arts today. He began the lesson, "Whilst we have been talking more about the general idea of the Dark Arts, we will be learning about some specific usages and their effects as well. These are rather famous usages which Death Eaters and Aurors alike use them in combat." Professor Styx paused for just a moment for the time being, wondering if they were getting any idea of what he was speaking of. "Who can tell me the three most famous Dark curses are?" Students rose their hands, and he nodded at one, and the student answered correctly. "Precisely. These curses are powerful and relentless. The person who would be casting the curses must want ill and harm to come in order to use these curses properly. However, if used enough, they will overwhelm the caster with anger, frustration, everything you can think of that is wicked and evil." Professor Styx gazed around the classroom to see everyone that was wrapping their heads around this subject. "Aurors are allowed to use these curses against dark wizards or witches and have a license to kill. They are, regardless, illegal and wrong. They corrupt people when used enough, even Aurors." Professor Styx tapped on the board and the homework wrote itself on the board for the students to copy down. "List the Unforgivable Curses and write an essay on their effects. You are to have this finished for the next lesson." Professor Styx looked at the time and they were almost going over the time that they had for this period. He told the class, "Class is dismissed just a little early. This will give you more time to get done with the assignment." The doors opened and the class was free to leave. Zoe scuttled into class rather later than usual, and offered an apologetic smile towards the Professor as she hurried to her desk. She did not think that he cared much for it. Punctuality is broadly appreciated, as she remembered. She then settled into the lesson, which was learning the Dark Curses. Zoe remembered them all from when her older sister had given her a pop quiz, but she was not called on to answer. She slumped in defeat, but knew that there would be other opportunities. Professor Styx went on to elaborate on the purposes of the Dark and Unforgivable Curses, before tapping on the board and presenting the class with their next assignment. Zoe eagerly wrote down a few key points for the essay that needed to be written, before the Professor announced that class would be dismissed a little early so they could work on their assignments. Zoe found this a little strange - not that she was not grateful - considering how much earlier he had been for the lesson compared to the students. But she did not complain.

For once, Sapphire was one of the first kids to class. She met Professor Styx's eyes as she came into the room, and she tried to smile. She usually didn't care about having an adults attention- or anyone's attention, for that matter. But for some reason she couldn't quite figure out she really wanted to impress this creepy as hell Professor. That would definitely explain why she was making an effort to be on time for this class. She looked to her usual spot and almost groaned- she had even beaten Alkander here, and that did sort of make her wish she had been a little later. She sat down quickly and pulled out her parchments, thinking she should be ready for anything Professor Styx might have prepared for today. The subject of his lecture today did catch her interest, a little bit. She had read a little bit on unforgivable curses, so she wasn't totally unprepared for class. Still, she took careful notes on his lecture. It really was a fascinating class, she couldn't deny that. She hardly noticed when Professor Styx let class out early. She had started her homework almost as soon as he assigned it, and by the time she had it finished most of the class had already left. Sapphire hurried to gather her things and then approached Professor Styx with a confidence she didn't quite feel. She handed him her assignment and then walked casually back out of class, letting out a breath she didn't know she'd been holding. Now that wasn't so bad, she thought.

What is life but one grand adventure?

Anora was one of the first people to arrive to class today, which was the first time ever that she had been one of the first to arrive for something. She just couldn't wait for the next Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson — she had had loads of fun in the past two! Anora realized that they were already half-way through the semester, which surprised her. It flew by really quickly! Anora smiled as Professor Styx entered the room. She was sure that he had another interesting lesson planned for the class today and looked forward to learning whatever he had to teach. Anora pulled out her parchment and quill, preparing to take notes on the lecture. She wasn't normally one to take notes on things, but Anora wanted to be sure that she remembered everything she was taught in this class. She leaned forward eagerly as Professor Styx began the lesson. Anora was looking forward to learning about the specific uses and their effects of the Dark Arts, though she was wondering if the lesson would take a morbid turn. It wouldn't be hard, after all, it was kind of hard to mention the Dark Arts without thinking of the weirdo-bald-vampireish-murderer dude that they learned about in the last lesson. Anora paid attention as the professor continued on to mention the Unforgivable Curses. Called it, Anora thought to herself. She knew that the lesson would take a morbid turn! When Professor Styx asked if anyone knew what the three Unforgivable Curses are, Anora was excited to find that she knew the answer so the raised her hand. To her delight, she was called on. "The Cruciatus Curse, the Imperius Curse, and the Killing Curse. The incantations for these three are 'Crucio,' 'Imperio,' and 'Avada Kedavra.'" Anora smiled when she was told that she was right. When the lesson was over, Anora quickly gathered up her things and headed to the Library to start working on her essay.

As Jacob settled into his seat, he wasn't sure whether he was excited for the lesson or not. He hadn't liked some of the lessons, which had seemed to just be set on making them afraid of the dark arts. He felt like they needed to learn more than to simply to fear it, however, and he hoped future lessons would finally get to them learning some defense. Listening to the professor's lecture, Jacob snorted at the mention of the Death Eaters. Everyone knew they didn't even exist anymore, though Jacob knew there were worse threats. His father never wanted to speak about things like that when he and his siblings were up, but he'd overheard his dad speaking to his mother about the Scitorari and other dark wizards before. The professor continued on, speaking about the unforgiveable curses, but not really giving them anything concrete to work from. Just that they were bad, which he'd known since he'd learned about the curses, and that they were evil, which he'd also known since about that time. The first year was growing a little frustrated that they weren't learning more. If the world was so big and dark, then shouldn't they be getting better prepared? Jacob copied down his assignment and left, wondering what his big brother would think about all of this. |

Gwen entered the Defence Against The Dark Arts classroom and took her usual seat in the room. She didn't mind the subject that much despite its gloomy atmosphere and wondered what they would be learning about after Tom Riddle. She took out her writing equipment and listened as the professor started the lesson, writing down the three spells that a fellow Gryffindor student had said to answer the question. They definitely seemed dangerous and Gwen hoped she'd never have to come across them in her life. When the class ended, Gwen left the classroom and made a mental note to get started on the homework later in hopes that she would actually remember it. |

Sam stood outside the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom with her textbook in her arms, and she held her bag over her shoulder, waiting for the door to open. She checked her watch but just as she did so, the door was swung open and her gaze met with Professor Styx‘s. She followed her classmates in, taking a seat and placing her stuff on the desk neatly in front of her. Once everyone was settled, they were ready to begin. She was definitely not in favour of the use of the dark arts and she wondered why and how some people were so cruel. Of course, there was going to be bad things in the world as well, Sam most definitely wasn't naive about that and she knew better than to believe in fantasy and a perfect world, that much had been clear a year and a half ago. She sighed at the reminder, but tried not to focus on it too much. She raised her hand when Styx asked the class what the curses were, and she frowned when she wasn't picked. She liked showing what she knew. It gave her satisfaction. The lesson was fairly short and simple, and they were dismissed early. Sam packed up, grabbing her belongings and heading out of the classroom to get the assignment done ASAP.

Anastasie entered the Defence Against The Dark Arts classroom and took her usual seat in the room. She took out all of her writing equipment, happy to be attending a lecture and kept her attention to the front of the room as the lesson started. They were going to be learning about the unforgivable curses and for a moment Ana wondered why it was they were learning about them if they were unforgivable. Shrugging, the girl took notes nonetheless and raised her hand as a question was asked. She was a bit disappointed that she wasn't called upon to answer it but was fine with that anyway. As the lesson ended the girl wrote down the homework and made her way out of the classroom and straight to the library so she could get started on it.

Mazikeen was so excited about the halloween feast at school at the end of the week. She was more excited for that than she was to see her first school quidditch game. There had always been halloween, and in her household that had meant sitting about with her parents reading relatively harmless bits and pieces that were children’s horror. They hadn’t really allowed her to go out, unless they had a wider party with friends, but this year, in the costume she had created for herself, Maze was so ready for it. She was so excited about it. The girl knew it was going to be a blast that she was just going to have some incredible fun. All in all, just enjoying what the school had to offer her. With that however, it meant getting through this week, and though she had liked the first two weeks of classes, she was beginning to realise that it could be quite boring. That not all of it could be made into fun and games. Much to Maze’s disappointment, but she was still largely in the honeymoon phase, just happy and excited, ready to face the day, ready for this week to be over. Mazikeen grabbed her bag and left the dorm. Maze walked into the defence against the dark arts classroom and took a seat in the room. her gaze shifted up to the professor at the front of the class as the angry sullen man got started. She was surprised that they would be covering the unforgivable curses, she had of course heard of them but she hadn't thought they would cover those until much later in their school career. But it appeared that they would be covering a little now, which she was ahppy to do. It was interesting to her that despite the aurors being the ones chasing such people that used them, that they themselves could not actually use the curses. Mazikeen had to just imagine how much determination it would take to do any of the curses, even how much power it would take, were evil spells more difficult to than regular spells, or did it not matter the nature of the spell as long as the intention was the same. The gryffindor with that noted that the class was over, so she wrote down what homework they were supposed to complete and then left the classroom, not entirely eager to get started on it, but knowing she should.
