Professor Sarah Harrington

Mother of Two Girls | Astronomy Professor | HS Graduate Ravenclaw

[justify]Today Professor Harrington had planned a shorter lesson knowing that the previous lesson had been packed full. They were exploring the birth of the star, instead of the full length of a star's life she thought it would be nice to break down the life of a star. Students were beginning to enter and Sarah smiled at each student as they entered. She has rearranged the room so the desks were pushed to the side and the middle of the room was empty. "Welcome back everyone! I hope everyone has been doing well," she said with a smile to her students.

"Today we are going to be looking into the Birth of a star." With that Professor Harrington waved her wand and the room around them changed into space and the center of the room that had been cleared of desks featured the Horse Head Nebula. Obviously they were not really in space and the ground was firmly below them still. "Now stay in your seats, this is just a projection similar to the ceiling of the Great Hall." She moved towards the center where all the students would be able to see her. "Stars are born in giant gas clouds called nebulae. These are millions of times bigger than this projection. The gas clouds are a collection of gas in space. The gas itself is twenty-five thousand million million times thinner than air here on Earth, because the gravity is much much lower. Even so, there is enough gravity for bits of gas to come closer together. As the gravity pulls more, the blobs get smaller and also heat up. Eventually, they will get so hot and dense that nuclear reactions start inside them and they turn into stars. The heat and light from these newborn stars can make nebulae glow in different colors." Sarah told the students as the projection zoomed in and showed the students what she was describing. She loved magic.

"Most newborn stars are born together in clusters, over billions of years the stars begin to drift apart and become much more solitary, like our Sun. There are rare instances where multiple stars will pull on each other with gravity and begin their lives in a dance, rotating around each other." Pausing Sarah looked around the class as the projection ended. "The heart of a star can rach 16 million degrees, that's in Celsius in case any of you are from the United States. A grain of sand this hot would kill someone 150km away, just to put that degree into perspective." She smiled at the students. "Hopefully that will answer any questions of why we've never been to the surface of the sun before. Astronomers work out how big a star is from its brightness and from its temperature. The stuff of stars is called plasma, which is gas, or rather the atoms of gas stripped of electrons." This was all interesting and she couldn't believe they were coming to the end of the lesson already. "Well, it seems our time has ended, before you go feel free to take a look up at the stars in the sky tonight, we can see many now that the skies have cleared up," she said with a smile dismissing the class.

Astronomy didn't do much for Lenore and she knew she could drop the subject in her third year. Not really sure which ones to drop Lenore tried to make something out of each one. Len arrived on time at the astronomy classroom and waited for her classmates to arrive. She didn't really have to many friends so she decided to sit next to Fleur. At least they were dorm buddies that meant something.

The projection that the Professor made looked nice and Len looked at the nebula.
She took notes and waited for more information on the subject. The different words and the information was a bit much. Len couldn't follow it anymore and just wrote down key words. It was one big text and although she understood the general outline, she found the things about gasses and gravity hard. The second part was more understandable and Len could keep up more.

Her hand started to hurt from writing the notes and Len was glad the class was over soon. She stuffed away her pen and notebook and walked to the windows. She saw the stars and they did look cool. Although she wasn't a fan of heights, they did look nice. When she was done with them, she left the classroom to go to bed.

Not a Twin | Perfectionist | Well-Organized | Swimmer | Controlled | Socially Awkward

Gabriella was a serious student, and she appreciated subjects like Astronomy that were very straightforward and didn't add silly things like songs or scavenger hunts. She liked the lectures, and found the other students in her year that complained about them very childish. She also liked the fact that it was a class they had at night, truthfully. She took a seat in the front and started taking notes on the lecture the professor gave. The birth of a start sounded interesting, and she was happy to learn about it. The projection in the room was amazing, and Gabriella's mouth dropped open slightly. She stared around her, and only then remembered or to take a few more notes. She wrote down that the gas was thinner than it was on earth and that gravity was much lower. A slight frown appeared on her face, as she honestly found all this a little hard to follow. Though the projection helped a lot. she also wrote down that stars were born in clusters and that they only drifted apart over billions of years. When the projection ended, she sighed a little in disappointed though she noted the last bits of information down too. She was sure it would all come back on the exams.

french | clumsy | regretful

Patrick entered the Astronomy classroom and took a seat in his usual chair. He didn't particularly like the subject but knew he had to attend the class nonetheless. Besides, the one thing on his mind at the moment was quidditch and the upcoming game. He knew he was only an alternate but he was eager for Hufflepuff to win and was very much excited to be cheering on his team, despite how much his step-sister hated the idea of it. The Hufflepuff sat and listened as the professor began talking about the birth of the star, but not even the projection of stars on the ceiling could distract him from his thoughts. Hufflepuff failed to win last year but he was sure that they'd be able to be successful this year and when they were Patrick was happy to rub it into Ana's face in hopes that she would realise how much fun it was after all. Patrick tried his best to take notes as the professor spoke but gave up slightly towards the end due to how fast she was speaking. Shrugging, the French boy left the classroom, glad to finally be out of it.
