Professor Kalif Styx
Member Avatar
Patriarch of the Zhefarovich Family, Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor, Slytherin Head of House, Former Death Eater, Legilimens, Occlumens

Going over spells that the class already knew left Professor Styx in a foul mood. However if someone dared complain, they would have their head on a plate and served to the Whomping Willow. However the students needed to learn these, even if they did not want to. It was all for the OWL course. He understood it and had to go through it himself half a century ago. Professor Styx left the doors open to allow some students to enter in early, as he situated himself in the front of the classroom, leaning against the desk for support. His arms crossed over his chest, and his Slytherins would know by now that gesture would mean to settle down and get prepared. His onyx eyes were cold and stern, as he wanted them to be. He could show so much through those gleaming eyes or so little.

Today was a lesson on the Body-Bind Curse, Petrificus Totalus, a charm they all knew quite well and probably practiced it to master it by this point in time, though this lesson would simply be about why it was a curse and the general idea of it. Once the students were accounted for, Professor Styx waved his hand and the doors and they shut with a click. Once again, the greeting was absent, and he got right into what they were doing today, "Today is a review and an explanation of the 'Body-Bind Curse. I expect you all to know the incantation, which we will not be going over as it would be a general waste of time. However what is not a waste of time is seeing why this is a curse and not a jinx. Could someone give the class their opinion?" Professor Styx saw a few hands raise, and he chose on two students to give out their opinions on why the spell was a curse.

Once they were finished, Professor Styx was nearly impressed, but this was merely review for them. He continued on, "This simple curse, as you all know, causes the body to become rigid. The incantation itself stems from Latin 'petrificare' to make into stone, and 'totalis' or entire." Professor Styx did not expect any notes, as all of them should know what it does, but at least they know a little more on the Latin stems that the spell comes from. Today seemed more like a Latin lesson than it did a Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson. Shrugging, Professor Styx concluded, "Now you are free to leave the classroom without any homework over a spell you've already known." Professor Styx waved and the doors opened to allow the students to leave his classroom.

Assignment: Roleplay the lesson. First two posters answer the question.

[justify]Flavio arrived to his second defence against the dark arts lesson, curious to learn more. In the previous lesson the class had been told about the babbling curse and after reading up in the library Flavio had began wondering what other curses he would be learning about and most importantly how to protect himself from them. They weren't the unforgivable curses, that was for sure but they were still curses meant to cause harm on another and if Flavio was able to he wanted to avoid himself or others being hurt. He sat down at the front of the room and got out his quill and parchment, nodding to the professor as the man began speaking. He explained the class would be learning about the body bind curse and Flavio, despite knowing about the curse, wrote everything down in case he would miss something important.

He paused the scribbling of his quill as the professor asked why the full body bind curse was indeed a Curse and not a Jinx. Such a question seemed to be dependent on how the person answering the question viewed it, but nevertheless Flavio raised his hand, speaking up when he was called upon to answer and formulating his words based on facts about both Curses and Jinxes. "Well, Professor, a Jinx is meant to cause minor harm to a victim for the sake of entertainment for the caster, while curses are meant to cause a greater amount of harm that consistently affects the victim. Since the body bind curse paralyzes the victim indefinitely, while they are still alert to their surroundings this seems to cause more harm to the person than a Jinx would, so it seems that by definition it is a curse rather than a Jinx." Flavio did not realize how long winded his answer was until he stopped speaking and in feeling slightly embarrassed from speaking so much, he stayed quiet for the remainder of the lesson, scribbling down notes. He thought the Latin origins of the curse was interesting but did not have much time to dwell on the thoughts as the class was soon dismissed. Flavio left the room, planning to study in the library before his next class.

Fifth year was strange so far, as it had caused Amber to question things about herself she would rather not. In order not to deal with that situation, she tended to throw herself into her schoolwork. Not that she wouldn't have done that anyway. Amber was a hard worker, and enjoyed working for her grades. She still didn't really enjoy heading into the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom, and as she took her seat she had to wonder if she had done the right thing by not dropping it. Whatever career she would have after Hogwarts, she didn't think it would involve what they were learning in this classroom too much.

The shutting of the door was intimidating as ever, and Amber resister the urge to turn her head and look as they clicked shut. Today it seemed like they were going to cover the Body-Bind Curse, something they had learned a long time ago. Professor Styx asked why the spell was a curse, and Flavio answered first. Then Amber's hand shot into the air and she spoke too. "It's a curse because it is also a stronger spell than a jinx. A jinx has only a short effect, and in a duel a curse is more effective because it lasts longer and inflicts more harm. While the victim isn't actually hurt by this curse, it does put them in a state of vulnerability." She said, hoping he answer had been satisfactory. It didn't feel as complete as Flavio's, but the boy hadn't left much to be added. She took some notes on what the professor told them about the curse, though she wasn't sure how relevant the origin of the incantation was to using the spell. It wa s a surprise they had no homework, and Amber happily left the classroom. She was glad to be out of the gloomy place.

♥Probably Reading in the Library♥

[justify]November was beginning to get back in the groove of lessons. She had spent plenty of time in her corner of the library preparing for the second set of lessons already. But she found herself busier with things outside of the library as well, which was new to her. She was spending more time with Flavio, the thought of him still made her blush tons. And her younger cousin was always around asking for help on her first year homework, which November was kind of happy about helping with. This year was her big testing year and helping her cousin gave her a chance to review the material from first year. That meant when it came down to studying for the exams, she wouldn't need to focus as much on first year and could spend more time on the other years. Especially second year as she hadn't done very well then.

Heading into the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom, November as usual picked a seat near Flavio. Her head was so consumed by thoughts of him she hardly noticed the class had started until he spoke. Perking up November listened to him and then Amber speaking about the Body-binding curse, one they already knew about. She wondered if there was anything new to learn about the curse, but it seemed to not be the case. The class ended shortly and November was glad, review was always welcomed in her books.

Part-Veela | Chaser | Hogwarts Monthly Writer & Assistant Editor | Heta Omega Secretary

[justify]Noemie’s frustration over her lack of prefect status had definitely diminished as she had decided that she was already very busy and didn’t need anything else on her plate. The teen had plenty to do, and with a career now focused in her mind she knew that she needed to work hard for it. Her grades had been somewhat average, she had always managed to pull EEs, especially in the last few years, but never anything higher, it was like no matter how much work she did, she couldn’t actually improve. That was more frustrating, and this year more than ever she needed to be getting better grades, so she didn’t have the time to spare to any other things aside from what she was already doing. The part-veela walked into the dorm room and took to getting herself ready to face the day. She took the most amount of time with her hair, pulling it out of the high ponytail and making it a little more presentable. She wanted to look nice for the day ahead of her. The teen got herself ready, and then her bag ready and took to preparing her quidditch stuff too so that after class she could do that.

Noemie walked into the defence against the dark arts class and took her usual spot within the room. She glanced towards the front as the professor got started upon his lesson. She was looking forward to eventually being done with this class. This professor while good was also just the worst. She didn't like that they were a review lesson, she didn't particularly like those because they were rather dull. But, knowing that she needed all the revision she could get. So, Noemie ensured that she had her notes in front of her and began writing down what the professor told them about it. She listened as others gave their opinion about it, not confident in her own opinion to say anything about it. She didn't want to get it wrong in front of anyone, and she didn't think she had an opinion either. She wrote down bits of what she agreed with when others said things. Eventually the lesson went back to the professor and she listened as the man described the curse, and what the words meant, and that was it. The part-veela was happy the lesson came to an end but she had been hoping for a little more. However, this was her OWL year, perhaps it was better if she didn't get to distracted by spells. Noemie packed away her things and left the room.

Sheltered and clueless | Chaser | Ollivanders Assistant

[justify]Rory was settling back into hogwarts well, he had plans to ask Therese out at some point soon, since he liked her far more than any of the other girls he was flirting with, and definitely wanted to pursue whatever there was there, it just meant getting up off his butt to do so. Getting back to school despite the difficulty of the year was when Rory tended to get lazier, he no longer had to work every day, so he spent more time just sitting around, a little more time napping, a little more time just taking things easily. The boy adjusted himself on his bed so that he was sitting up. However, he couldn’t be waiting around much longer, he needed to go to class. The boy gathered up what bits and pieces he had moved out of his bag and didn’t even check to make sure he had everything in the bag. He got changed into his uniform and got the quidditch things ready before he then left the dorm room. He stopped at the great hall, and had a small breakfast, being sure to have a coffee, he didn’t much like the taste but he knew it helped keep him awake and that was important to him. With that he left for the class.

Rory walked into the defence against the dark arts classroom and took a seat within the room. He looked up at the professor and waited until the man got started before he got out his notes. He didn't like how this year was shaping, he hoped that they wouldn't be doing so many revision lesson and still actually get to learn some real things about magic, do some real spells. But he listened along lazily as the man talked to them about it. About what they'd be covering, about what that was, and asked for opinions. He listened to Flavio's answer, surprised almost that the boy did have an answer and opinion upon the matter. He listened to others less closely and kept his gaze on his notes the entire time, even as the professor came back in and talked to them about the spell and it's meaning. Rory was one of the first out of the room the moment he could leave, barely taking paying attention to whether or not they had homework.

Defense Against the Dark Arts was by no means Ainsley's favourite part of her week, but last week's lesson had surprisingly not been too bad. She made her way into the classroom, not sure what to expect for this week, and took a seat next to Amber, setting her things up to take notes. The click of the door closing startled her slightly, and she felt Amber react next to her. Focusing her attention on the Professor, Ainsley was surprised that they would be going back to material they had already covered. She supposed it made sense, with OWLs coming up, to be refreshing themselves, but it was still a little surprising. She took careful notes anyway, writing down Flavio and Amber's articulate answers to Professor Styx's questions. She was worried that they would be asked to practice the spell, but to Ainsley's relief it was just a revision lesson. She took notes of everything that was said until class was over, packing her things up when they were done and heading out of the room with Amber, pleasantly surprised not to have any homework.

Even all of these years later, Anthony still did not enjoy Defence Against the Dark Arts class. Professor Styx was just as unnerving as he had been when Anthony had laid eyes on him for the first time. He sighed, and took a seat in the class nonetheless. He figured a fair chunk out of this year would end up being revision for the OWLs but he couldn't be certain on that. He didn't mind, either way, but he just hoped that there would be some practical work sprinkled in between. He listened to Professor Styx speak throughout the lesson and made sure to take some notes, and when they were all dismissed he headed off to the common room.

Hayden was in a foul mood after his break up with Odette. Even when she was acting like a brat he hadn't really wanted to do it but the girl had left him little choice when she issued her ultimatum. At the end of the day, he couldn't look the other way and she had made it clear to punish her was to end their relationship. So end it he did. The last place he wanted to be was in a classroom with the man he took her to but he couldn't exactly avoid Defence against the dark arts. Hayden made his way into the classroom and took a seat and as soon as he heard the word 'review' he pretty much switched off until he was snapped out of it by Professor Styx bringing the lesson to an end. He picked up his bag and made his way out of the lesson.

Don't Talk About It

Professor Styx doesn't look in a good mood. Louisa observed as she entered the classroom, taking a seat slightly to the left of his unwavering glare. After five years, she'd learnt that there were definitely times to just shut up where her Head of House was concerned, and so she did just that, not raising her hand when he asked a question, though she'd actually been reading up on the topic only a few nights before. She had to fight the urge to roll her eyes when he revealed they'd be reviewing Petrificus Totalus today. The OWLs were daunting, sure, but months of reviewing things they already knew was almost more so. Anyway, she had no interest in using curses or jinxes, she was interested in how they could be counter-acted. She was glad he didn't ask them to practice the spell itself among themselves, because that truly would've been a waste of time. Professor Styx didn't waste time, it was part of why she liked him. His dismissal almost made her laugh. He knew this wasn't a particularly interesting class, but it was on the syllabus so he had to teach it. She had to admire his transparency.

Evangeline entered the classroom and was wondering what today would bring. With some books in her arms she walked over to her place in the middle of the classroom. Evangeline sat alone mostly, nobody could distract her. But deepdown she would like to sit next to a friend, one who would respect what she wanted. And what Evangeline wanted was to get good grades, because she needed it more than ever. The brunette was ready to take some notes of the lecture and listened to Styx. He was her head of house and she didn't mind him. He was silent and it seemed that he didn't act like he was something else. The brunette listened as two students gave their opinion. Evangeline writed down the things that were right. It didn't seemed like a very long class and the lecture was not very long. Evangeline took her stuff when the lesson was done and would pay the library a visit again to study she figured.
