Today, Professor Styx was in a sour mood, which was not what one would want to see from the Slytherin Head of House. He sat behind his desk, and he had the doors shut, but once he saw it was time for allow the third years in, he waved his hand and the doors opened. They came in and sat down. He waited a moment before he took role in his mind. After everything was silent in the room, Professor Styx started off the class with a rather interesting lesson for them, "We will be learning about Boggarts today. Now, who can tell the class what a boggart is?" Professor Styx gestured to a student that got the question correct. At least someone did do their homework and study on what they were. That made Professor Styx's sour mood lessen just a fraction. "With most magical beasts or with any defensive incantation I have taught you a specific wand movement and the appropriate incantation. For a boggart you need more than that, you need to be able to push through your fear. The spell required does not actually repel the boggart it merely makes it change its shape to something comical. That something comical comes from the mind of the castor. Sheer concentration is needed for this. Now can anyone tell me a way of confusing a boggart?" More hands flew into the air, and Professor Styx motioned to one to answer. Once more another someone had studied. That was still not enough to bring the former Death Eater from his sour mood. It was enough to make him think that the third years were not completely hopeless. "The incantation for this is 'Riddikulus' and the wand movement is a simple flick of the wrist. Boggarts can be found in most dark spaces, in cupboards, underbeds so be careful always and always be prepared. Now take down your homework for next week. Then class dismissed." The homework was written on the board which was write a detailed essay on the boggart and what the students would do when they were encountered with one. Assignment: Roleplay the lesson and do the homework.Defence Against the Dark Arts,3,2 |

Defense against the Dark Arts was one of the more fuller classes Elly had. Maybe because of the importance of the subject, but the classroom was filled. You needed it for almost every job, so that made it that people held it as a subject. Since Elly didn't know what she wanted to do, she just kept all. Elly entered the classroom and sat down. Professor Styx looked like his dark and gloomy self and Elly smiled. It suited perfectly for the head of house of Slytherin and the DADA Professor. When Elly heard they were learning about boggarts today, Elly was curious. She was scared what hers would be, but excited at the same time. ''It is a shape shifting non-being that can't die and takes on the form of the viewers worst fear'' Elly muttered when she picked for the question. She had it right and Elly noted it down. Some other questions came and Elly was curious to see if they were going to work with boggarts in the next lessons to come. When the class was over and the homework appeared on the board, Elly wanted to know more about the subject and decided to study the book.

All his subject had gotten harder and harder. Perry didn't usually study for a lot of things and he had gotten behind already. Normally they would have introductions in each first lesson. Now they needed to know facts and other stuff he barely knew a thing about. It scared Perry and he wondered if he could only bring herbology to a success for seven years. Perry entered the classroom and sat down. The Professor started talking about boggarts and Perry had no clue what they even were. He had read up on werewolves, not on boggarts. He kind of forgot to do that stuff. Between all the other subjects he had, it was a lot and Perry didn't knew the first question at all. Some girl answered it and know he at least seemed to get what a boggart was. The second question went over his head entirely. He could think of something, but it wouldn't be the right answer. He decided to not throw himself of a cliff and let someone else get it. Perry wondered what the boggart thing was about, he had looked under his bed and in cupboards a lot in his life and had never seen a boggart. Maybe it was a myth like the scary stories of monsters under your bed. Perry smiled and wrote the homework down. Which came on the end of his workload list. He shrugged and decided to leave the classroom. It was for the best if he didn't stay longer than he needed to. It only confused it his brain more. |

Sara arrived to Defense, taking a seat as soon as she did so. She didn't say anything as usual as everyone else arrived and the lesson soon began. Sara wasn't about to test the professor's patience, especially as her head of house seemed like he wanted to hit something. Or someone. She tried not to dwell on that too much and instead wrote down notes, liking the fact that as the lesson progressed she could feel good about having read ahead. Elly answered the man's first question, Sara nodding to herself. She had done the reading so she knew what the Ravenclaw was going on about. When Styx asked another question, Sara raised her hand, wanting to one, earn house points and two, make sure she was on the right track about boggarts. "In order to confuse a boggart you can bring a friend with you to face it, that way it won't be sure of what form to take since there'll be more than one person." She was satisfied to have gotten it correct. She wrote down the incantation with the wand movement as well, finding it a simple enough incantation to remember when it could come in handy. The third year was a little unsettled at when and where the boggart could appear, and she wrote down the homework. Once they were allowed to leave she packed up and left the classroom, heading to the library to get her work done.

Geo had already managed to get caught lurking outside the DADA classroom once that week, but at least this time she had a reason to be here. Entering the class with her friend she took a seat and got out her parchment, ready to take notes. As soon as the Professor started talking about Boggarts she was instantly transfixed, imagining the possibilities that such a thing could take the shape of. It also made her a little nervous that if they were going to be experimenting with Boggarts, everyone's true fears would be exposed, and despite her love for the Professor she adverted her eyes to her page for the majority of the lesson, trying to consider the impact of what that might do to some of the students. A few questions were asked, but Geo wasn't quick enough to answer them herself, instead listening to Elly and Sara as they gave the responses. She was glad she had companions in all houses, but Geo still kept feeling a little sad at how infrequently she was seeing her favourite Gryffindors. She glanced at Perry, wondering whether she should ask him to check on the girls for her, but shaking the idea from her mind she concentrated on the class again, getting down to the homework so that she wouldn't have too much of a workload ahead of her.

Norton was very happy, he was in fact fairly over the moon, and this was all because Min was back at school! He was so excited to have his best friend back, and it just increased his excitement overall for all of Hogwarts, if that was even possible. The boy liked being able to learn about magic, he liked being on the quidditch team, though in the former he did struggle to pay attention for quite a while. He didn’t always last in the lectures, and if a professor spoke too fast then usually no matter how hard he tried he couldn’t keep up. Norton was getting ready for the day, excitedly moving about the dorm room getting everything that he would need for the day ahead of him. He had quidditch practice fairly often, so the hufflepuff made sure to also put all of that into his bag, he wasn’t about to stop doing that! As much as he wanted to spend as much time with Min as possible, his love of quidditch had to be continued. The teen got the final few things together, double checking he had everything in his bag and then excitedly left for the class. He couldn’t wait to see what this week would bring him. Norton walked into the defence against the dark arts classroom and took his usual spot in the room. he was always keen to learn, but it was an absolute toss up in this class as to whether or not he would like it. He took out his notes and his books and looked towards the man at the front as he began speaking. Norton was very keen to get started on learning new spells and how this might tie into the care of magical creatures lessons. He didn't like the sound of a boggart, and he didn't want to ever face one, but he wouldn't have to in this lesson it seemed and more than that, they were learning how to defend against them. He knew that having a friend would be helpful to him but he wasn't always going to have a friend around to confuse it. He made sure he wrote down how to say it, how to write it, how to do the hand motion, everything. He wouldn't be caught off guard by such a creature. However, with that it appeared that the lesson was over and he was able to leave the classroom. |

Phoebe Holland had gotten in trouble with the headmistress within her first week at the school. She wondered if that was some sort of record, though it didn't bother her too much. She was sure she would surrive the detention, and didn't have many worries about the entire thing. She just hoped Elly didn't worry about it either. It still took some getting used to being a third year and having classes with all the different houses, though it did make things more interesting. More competitive too. Though Phoebe's main competition was Elly, and she was in her own house. Phoebe took a seat near the front of the classroom and listened to Professor Styx. Her hand shot into the air at the question about the boggart, but unsurprisingly it was Elly that was picked. Phoebe looked at at her from the corner of her eye. She liked Elly, but didn't enjoy this. She started taking notes on the boggart and the way to get rid of it. It was interesting that the spell didn't actually repel it but just made it change its shape. She wondered if it would leave you alone if you've done that. Phoebe raised her hand again when the professor asked how to confuse a boggart, as she had a pretty good idea. But a Slytherin girl was picked instead. She scowled, this was not her day. She noted down the incantation and a quick description of the wand movement. She also noted down the homework for next week, and then left the classroom with a frown on her face. |

stop staring ... I had spattergroit, ok!

Minerva slid into a seat near the back of the classroom and took out the things she would need to take her notes. Her eyes looked almost bloodshot and dark bags were heavy beneath her eyes. For the past few days Minerva had gotten little in the way of sleep and it was really starting to show. The professor began the lesson and for a moment Minerva groaned to herself. She was so mentally wigging out that she missed answering the professors question entirely. She knew what a boggart was but she didn't know what hers was, she did think once that she had a fear of being lonely but after having spattergroit, her fear was loneliness but of having a deeply scarred complexion too. Minerva had never thought of herself as vain but being around others of her age group made her look at herself as they might see her and it never really pleased her. She took notes, such as having to push through your fear in order to be able to cast the incantation. It was while writing that she remembered that Professor Styx had told them that this year would be mainly theory, so perhaps today would be simply that and nothing more. Again she missed answering a question and became annoyed at herself as a result. Writing down the wand movement and incantation Minerva wondered how they could possibly practice this particular incantation without the actual use of a boggart but again was delighted that they wouldn't be and as the class was dismissed, she closed up her notebook with that nights homework written on it and left the classroom wondering what exactly her boggart could be.

Jessica was... hesitant about the direction of Defence Against the Dark Arts this year, she thought as she sat down at an unclaimed desk near the side of the room. Although she knew it was important to learn as much as she could to defend herself against this world if the need ever arose, she wasn't particularly certain that talking about weird creatures was the most important thing to focus on. When she grew up she was going to live in a city, and there were barely any animals there beyond the various pets and pests (that she certainly hoped never to see either, actually). She tried to read the textbook in preparation, but given up at all the fantasy sounding names, as well as the mention of werewolves and vampires. She was determined to believe that the last two only existed in theory and that none of them had actually existed for years, and if she didn't read the book it couldn't tell her otherwise. Which meant that she didn't really remember what a Boggart was - not that she would have put her hand up to answer the question anyway. Jessica noted down the other student's answer, grimacing as Professor Styx continued with more information. Pushing through her fear... they said it could change into anyone's worst fear, but she was having trouble picturing it. What if you were afraid of drowning? How could it shapeshift into something so abstract? It couldn't, Jessica decided, and even though drowning wasn't something she would call her absolute worst fear, she felt much safer knowing that she would most likely be able to face such a thing with ease. Besides, if it shifted right in front of her, she would know it wasn't real. Once again Jessica found herself wishing they were going to focus on something that would have a better chance of being an actual problem someday. Nevertheless, she took the notes down and made a copy of the homework instructions. There was no point completely turning her nose up at learning how to defend herself in all ways possible. |
