Professor Kalif Styx

Patriarch of the Zhefarovich Family, Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor, Slytherin Head of House, Former Death Eater, Legilimens, Occlumens

Professor Styx looked as though he had not moved an inch from the last lesson, as he was leaning against his desk with his arms folded across his chest. The second years were soon to arrive and once everyone was seated, Professor Styx had a really good question for them all, but he doubted that one would not have the correct answer as much as an opinion. Once the doors were shut, and the class had settled down, Professor Styx got their attention with his difficult question, "Who can tell the class why we would study Prank-like Jinxes in this class, when they are not dark in nature?" The first student raised their hand, and once Professor Styx gestured for them to continue, they gave the class their opinion. Silent, he motioned to another student to hear their answer as well. "I would not say that you are correct, nor would I say that you got the answer wrong. However, why I am teaching you this is because as a second year, none of you would have any hope to survive against advanced Dark Magic, let alone cast it."

Professor Styx wanted to get this through their heads before they would even try to go out and face someone in his allies and hope to survive. Most of them would not hurt a kid, but if Professor Styx was not a professor, and someone met him in a dark alley, that would be a different story. "You may pick up on curses and jinxes in your books that may seem funny and harmless, however when you use them on each other... That is where I come in. I will teach you how to recognize these jinxes and curses as well as reverse them when used on you." Now that the class seemed to know why Professor Styx was teaching them what they might find enjoyable, he continued on, "Most of these jinxes can be countered and or blocked by the spells that were taught the previous year. However, this year will be mostly theory." They would not be enjoying the lesson so much but he could care less. He was doing his job, and when the students were miserable but getting stronger in magic, he knew that he was doing his job right.

"Today, we will begin the Knee-reversal jinx. You will be writing me an essay on this jinx, it can include, but is not limited to, the jinx's effect, use, reasons for use, reasons for creating such a spell." Professor Styx wondered how many different reasons why the jinx would have been created to begin with. "You have a basis to work on. This jinx is obviously used as a prank, but also is a rather cruel way to have someone stop walking to fail to walk decently." Professor Styx waved his hand at the door, and they opened slowly to allow the students to leave the classroom. "You have until next lesson to turn these in. Class is dismissed." Professor Styx did not wish to have any lingering students try out this jinx in his presence.

Assignment: Roleplay the lesson and do the assignment.

[justify]Chante was one of the first students to arrived to DADA, her assignment already in hand. She quickly passed in to the professor, avoiding his gaze the entire time she handed over her finished work. It had been fairly easy to look up these spells thanks to the book she purchased this year and the ones in the library naturally came in handy. She was certain she had completed her assignment right. Chante sure Professor Styx would let her know if she did it wrong. Chante took a seat afterwards.

Professor Styx went onto to ask the class about prank-like jinxes. The question was a tricky one, however, Chante found herself attempting to answer it justifiably. "Jinxes, they're like stepping stones towards the dark art. I would think were learning them because they're lot appropriate for our age." Chante stated upon being called on. She had made a guess, something relatively obvious according to her age. Besides, some curses were forbidden to use in school. She read that fine little detail writing up her assignment last week.

Chante sat and listen to the lecture given. She kind of got lost in the mist of Styx explaining everything. Were they going to learn how to cast jinxes, defend against them or write about them instead? She figured a little bit of everything. And he did mention the spells they learn last year were defensive spell one can use against someone trying to jinx another. Chante would have to go over them. Didn't hurt to refresh her growing skill with magic. Once the lecture concluded, the class was dismissed. Chante picked up her things and left.

DADA Lesson 2

Knee-Reversal Jinx

Knee-Reversal Jinx causes the victim's legs to verse in place. Instead of the knees facing forwards, they're facing backwards instead. It's a spell, an obvious prank spell. I think it was intended to extremely annoy someone, or make them extremely uncomfortable. Prevent them from walking, running, or possibly fly a broomstick if that person had one. Imagine if someone was to jinx another while they're flying a broomstick. It can potentially become fatal if it's done at the wrong place, at the wrong time.

It was now the second week, and Theodore had managed not to talk to anyone but his brother for more than a few sentences. He enjoyed this, though he had a feeling Edmund was more curious about his classmates than he was. It was only September still, but he was starting to make plans for their Halloween costume this year. It had to be good, and show the school what Halloween was all about. Perhaps it would be best to do something truly terrifying this time, to counter all the silly kitten and bunny costumes the other students insisted on wearing.

He headed into the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom with his twin brother, though he couldn't muster up much excitement for the lesson. After all, prank-like jinxes were hardly dark, and it was kind of a joke that they had to learn about them in this class. As if reading his mind, the Professor asked the class why they were learning about these spells. Theodore didn't raise his hand, as he couldn't give an answer. He didn't think they should be learning it, and it was a waste of his time. His explanation also made him feel like this was just filler. Why not just wait until the later years to teach this subject then? Rather than waste everyone's time. He took a few notes on the lecture, though he el mostly bored. The knee-reversal jinx didn't sound bad, actually, and he wondered how a few of the more annoying kids at Hogwarts would like being at the end of a spell like that. He smiled slightly to himself as he pictured it. The lesson was over soon after, and he gathered his things. He left with his brother Edmund, wondering if the next prank jinx would be darker than this one.

Gabriella Tillington was actually in a good mood. She had talked to her sister, for third time, and it hadn't been awful. Frankie was completely different to Gabriella, and she wondered how much of that had been their separate upbringing. She didn't think it was all that, though. They were very different deep down. But that didn't mean they had to be enemies. They were sisters, and that wasn't going to change.

She was still kind of relieved to have a class without Frankie in it, though. Being around her was strange. She filed into the classroom and took a seat next to Chante after a moment of hesiation. The girl seemed to like her, so perhaps Gabriella could turn her into a friend. She gave the girl a small smile, then focused on the professor. They were talking more about prank like jinxes, which wasn't her favorite. She didn't think it was all that important or necessary to learn, but she would have to deal with it. She listened to the professor ask the question that Chante answered. She thought the girl had a fairly good answer and had nothing else to add. She worried her disapproval would be audible in her voice if she did.

They were going to learn how to recognize the jinxes and reverse them, which was at least somewhat useful. It was a relief that most jinxes could be countered or blocked by spells they had learned in their first year. They learned abut the knee-reversal jinx which just sounded horrible, and Gabriella wrinkled her nose. Anyone using that as a prank was both cruel and childish in her opinion, and she wouldn't hesitate to tell a professor if she saw it being used. She wrote down the homework, then left the classroom quietly. She didn't think she would want to use any of the jinxes they would be taught in this class.

[justify]Simon always liked the second week better than the first, he just found the fact they barely did any work in the first week to be one of the more annoying elements of it. He got frustrated about the lack of working, but he was also a little thankful of it, since it gave him a little more time to prepare for the future classes, and now, at the second week Simon felt confident and ready to face the classes that he needed to. He would manage it, he would manage to do the work. The Ravenclaw was putting together the scattered notes from the various classes he had into the necessary piles. He worked a lot, but every time he sat down, he did something different, which did create notes that could largely be very out of order. Once he was done with that, he found the notes he would need for the day and placed them into the bag, since he’d had barely any homework during the first week, there was none of that to pack into his bag. Instead he just made sure he had the right books and got ready. Simon put on his uniform and grabbed his wand, walking out the dorm with the bag being swung onto his back.

Simon was keen to learn some curses and he was keen to get started so, he arrived at the defence against the dark arts classroom with plenty of time. He took his seat in the room and glanced up at the professor who began his lesson shortly after he had arrived. The boy took out his notes and began listening to what was being said. He tried to raise his hand to answer the question, two other people got picked over him, so he put down his hand frustratedly. The boy wasn't keen on not being the one to answer, but he would focus instead on the rest of it. He listened as the professor continued upon the lecture, about what curses and jinxes they might've been funny, but were dangerous. He nodded along, but was very disappointed when it turned out that they wouldn't be doing many spells, he had been hopeful that they'd learn a couple of them, but apparently not. He took a note of the homework and left the class to be able to go do it. He would enjoy doing the essay but it wasn't spell work.

Alexis entered the gloomy classroom of her DADA class. Glancing at Prof. Styx who was waiting for others to arrive, she made her way to an empty seat next to Simon Vanity and pulled out her notes for the class. She looked around her to see who was not yet there in the class.

Soon enough, they were all accounted for and the class promptly started with a question on prank-like jinxes. Many hands raised and Chante was called first. After her answer, Prof. Styx asked for one more input and this time, Alexis was pointed to answer. She cleared her throat before replying, "It's because these prank-like jinxes still cause harm to a person despite its purpose of entertainment. It is a form of entertainment at the expense of other people's misfortune." It was just her opinion and nowhere near to what the teacher had in mind but for the Ravenclaw, it was a valid point. Prof. Styx then explained the reason why. His answer was insulting to the second years but it was a realistic explanation.

Prof. Styx then proceeded to explain Knee Reversal Jinx which they would be learning, but only in theory. With the homework set for the class, he promptly dismissed. Students looked disappointed to not perform spells but Alexis had better things to consider and that was her homework.

Patrick entered the Defence Against The Dark Arts classroom and quietly sat down and took out his things for a lecture. He didn't particularly like the subject but he was still eager to pay attention and learn as much as he could for the upcoming exams. He sat in the class and scribbled away on his piece of parchment, not feeling confident enough to answer the questions asked. He gave Alexis a friendly smile however as she answered one of them, admiring her intelligence. Patrick didn't like the point of prank-like jinxes and felt as though there was no point in them existing. However, people somehow thought they were fun and at least they enjoyed them. To Patrick it was just another form of bullying and he did not like this. The Hufflepuff wrote down his homework at the end of the lesson and made a mental note to do it later before leaving the classroom and heading straight to his next class.
