Professor Sarah Harrington had just gotten back from popping home to tuck her youngest child into bed and by looking at her watch she noticed that it was nearly time for the second lesson for the first years. They seemed like a bright bunch and not too troublesome. Though there had been a few who hadn't played along during the first lesson she hoped things would be better now this week. Sitting at her desk in the front of the class she was beginning to hear the whispers and footsteps coming down the hall. The door was open and students began to come in. She tried to greet each student as they entered. "Welcome back first years, I hope you are ready for some note taking this week." "Today we are going to be looking at the Solar System." Professor Harrington said as her students settled into their seats. She tapped a piece of paper that was sitting on a projection and images began to pop up on the front wall. It was the Solar System starting from the center and moving outwards on a loop of about a minute. "Solar System is what we call a star and all the objects that orbit around that star. That includes planets, rocks, debris, comets, and so on. Our Solar System has nine planets, the closest being Mercury and then Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and...Pluto." Sarah could see some confused faces, especially those who might have been raised with a muggle school system or muggle parents, though as a teacher she wasn't aware of any blood status for any of the students. "Yes Pluto is a planet for as long as you study Astronomy in the Wizardry World." Professor Harrington was enjoying going over the basics with these students. She hoped they were paying attention or it might come back to get them later when they had exams that featured this information. "The first four planets are mostly of a solid material, the next four planets exist in a gaseous state and finally Pluto is of solid material like the first four planets." She could tell who was doodling vs. taking notes. Even could see a few who didn't seem to care at all. She knew Astronomy wasn't for everyone, but for their basic understanding of the wizardry world this was a required class so they needed to pay attention regardless. "When muggles first started to look up into the night sky, they believed Earth was the center of all things, everything else simple revolved around us. It wasn't until about 400 years ago when a Wizard family leaked the truth about the Solar System and how it truly works. Since then Muggles have managed to accelerate into the first space age." Professor Harrington paused a moment to glance at the clock. Today's lesson was over and it was jam packed with information and she hoped her first years weren't too tired as it was late in the night now. "Well, that finishes today's lesson. Pack your things away and take note of this week's homework on the board here," she said pointing towards the board where the homework was written out for them. Homework: Pick a planet of your choice and write a short essay (100 word) on that planet. Remember to cite where you get your information, remember if you plagiarize you will earn yourself a T. Astronomy,1,2 |

This was the second time that he had to walk to long flight of stairs up to the astronomy tower. It was still a very long way up and he was glad he made it. Jacob sat down and waited for the lesson to start. He secretly hoped that the Professor had supplied them with massive amounts of their favourite candies. When he looked around it wasn't that kind of party and he grabbed his paper and pen. He was trying to make notes about everything the Professor was saying. The solar system was pretty complex and Jacob tried to write it down. He wasn't a very fast writer and secretly hoped there were pens that made notes for him. Jacob smiled and wrote more or the information down. All the planets seemed understandable and this lesson seemed comprehensible. The Professor talked in a understanding tone and Jacob was still up to date with writing. His hand did start to ache a bit and he was happy that the class was over soon. Jacob left the classroom when the Professor said they could. It was a long flight of stairs back. |

Diana had very little patience for Hogwarts and its classes, though Astronomy was one bright point in her week. She had been fascinated by the stars since she was small, and still sometimes felt like they watched over her at night. That was a silly and childish way of thinking, though, and she would never admit to it. She was a little disappointed to hear they would look at the solar system during tihis lesosn, as it was somewhat basic. Still, she took a few notes as she listened to the professor talk about what a solar system was, before going on to the nine planets. It made sense to her that people thought the Earth was the center of the universe so long ago, though she wondered why muggles thought it and not wizards. Perhaps there was some sort of magical way to look at the solar system? She noted down the homework before packing her things. She hoped they would get to stargazing soon as she would really enjoy that. Besides, it was kind of silly to have lessons late at night if they were just going to take notes. |

Kira sat quietly in class, making sure to take notes, not noticing how fast the lesson went by until the teacher gave them their homework assignment and dismissed them. She looked up and blinked, surprised, before pulling out a blank parchment and quickly scribbling down her homework essay. By the time she had finished the last of the other students were filing out of the classroom. She quickly gathered her things and gave her assignment to the teacher with a shy smile before shuffling off after the others. Kira Wolf Ravenclaw First Year Astronomy Lesson Two Saturn: The Sixth Planet From the Sun Saturn is the second largest planet in the solar system, named after Chronus lord of the Titans of Greek Mythology. It's the farthest planet from the earth that can be seen without a telescope, but it's only with a telescope that you can really see how magnificent Saturn truly is. Aside from its marvelous rings, Saturn is a true gas giant that can hold about 700 earths! It spins really fast, too, completing a rotation of the entire planet in ten and a half hours. It's really light too, if you could put it into a tub it would float. Everything I know I learned from my brother-in-law Jason. He really likes the stars. |

Sapphire was the last student into class again, slipping in quietly and finding the nearest available seat. She had to admit a mild interest in this class. She listened, though she didn't take notes. Her professor kept her attention, and Sapphire smiled at her when class was dismissed. She stopped by the library on her way back to the dorms, and returned the homework they had been given to the Professor the next morning before breakfast. Sapphire Michaels Slytherin First Year Astronomy Lesson 2 Ceres is a minor planet hidden in the astroid belt. I like it because hardly anyone ever knows about it and it's hidden in plain sight. It's the largest object in the asteroid belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, and it's slightly closer to Mars. It's the largest of the minor planets within the orbit of Neptune, and its made of rock and ice. Even at it's brightest it is too dim to be seen unless it's in the blackest of skies, which I think is kind of cool. It's the unseen things that are the most beautiful. Edit: I'll need a reference from you for this essay, as in where you got your information/what website you might have used! |

Zennon wasn't a huge fan of lectures. He liked studying alright, but he preferred it to be on his own terms and not the terms set by everyone else. Zennon couldn't exactly say he was happy to be back in this class though, not after the last one. He hoped that this would actually be about astronomy and not what the professor had for breakfast. He knew they'd gotten off to a bad start (which was mostly his fault) but he'd decided he very much disliked this Professor, whatever her name was, he was pretty sure he'd blocked it out. He immediately sat towards the back of the class, ready to head out if she said anything stupid. He wasn't going to tolerate a bad education because a professor didn't know how to do her job, that was on her, not him. When she mentioned note taking, Zennon was cautiously optimistic, but didn't get his hopes up too quickly incase she was just teasing him or something. It appeared they would be learning about the solar system, which was a great deal more interesting than the Professor's life. It was a good thing too, Zennon quite liked the solar system and was very into astronomy. If she ruined his love, he would take her life a living nightmare. As she spoke, Zennon prepared to take notes to complete any homework she might give out.
When the lecture ended, Zennon quickly went over his notes before heading out of the classroom. Wizards made so much effort to help muggles. He was beginning to wonder why all this revolution stuff was even happening. |

Gerry walked into Astronomy class ready to absorb more information that she could write home to her father about. He had been delighted to hear about last week's Astronomy class. Gerry was not one to enjoy lectures, but her hand was good at taking notes without her needing to pay too much attention. She had learned about the Solar System in primary school. This class was basically review. She was surprised to learn that Pluto was to be considered a planet. She was unclear on the reasoning, but figured she might learn later. When the professor dismissed them, Gerry wrote down her homework question and left.

Anastasie quickly entered the Astronomy Tower and sat down in the same seat she did last lesson. She wanted this particular seat to be hers and tried her best to be on time to class so no one else would take it. The girl took out her writing equipment as the professor began the lesson, teaching them about the solar system. She took notes where she saw fit, enjoying the fact that the lesson was an informative lecture rather than anything else. When the lesson ended, the Slytherin left the classroom and headed straight out of class, intending to get to doing the homework later to hand in next lesson. |
