Lesson #: Three

Chante almost forgotten about Astronomy class. She was running late on the count she had the hours mixed up with the usual night set up. Lucky, she asked someone from her house after breakfast. After a later breakfast, Chante hurried up those stairs quickly as their professor started the lesson on the birth of stars. She was really liking Astronomy, it was gradually becoming her favorite subject out of all of them. It's one of two she felt connected to her family back in North Dakota and of course, her granddad that unfortunately died here. One would think that would make her unhappy, it was quite the opposite. She can't explain it, maybe it had a lot to do with her grandmother. She always knew how to put everything in perspective to which Chante would understand.

Professor Harrington, like her grandmother. had that gift as well. Every lesson she could easily follow the woman's every word and not get lost at all. She enjoyed the lecture today. Chante took down notes by the dim light on display, as much as she could. She was fascinated how she explain the formation of stars. And it sounded complicated, but not at all to Chante. She would have to relate this all back to her grandma. There just so much to talk about when it comes to space. But she had to admit, she was a little bias with her grandmother. She loved the way she spoke of the stars like stories. Their history in them, and her grandmother never missed a chance for them to be told.

Lesson 4:

Saph wandered into the Astronomy classroom, not quite the last one in. It was a little earlier than she normally was, she would admit that much. She found a seat in the back and pulled out her parchment and quill. Todays lecture was on the sun, and Saph couldn't help but find her attention wondering. It wasn't until Professor Harrington mentioned how the sun was what gave everyone magic that Saphhire was really pulled into the lesson. But, as she was starting to jot that down, the class ended. Saph frowned and gathered her things, heading to the library to investigate more.

Lesson 4

Kira hurried into her astronomy class a little later than she liked. She scanned the room as she entered, quickly taking a seat next to Jacob. She flashed him a smile before turning to Professor Harrington, her parchment and quill already out.

The lesson today was on the sun, and Kira took careful notes. Once she copied everything on the chalkboard and made a small side note that the sun was the source of magic, she began on her homework. She quickly wrote down the sun's effects on various plants and how it affected different growing cycles. She turned it in to Professor Harrington with a smile, wondering as she left if maybe her essay was a bit too different to get a good grade.

Lesson #:4

Oliver stumbled into class a little later than usual, and he sent his professor an apologetic look, quickly finding his seat. After spilling his writing tools and parchment out, he gave Professor Harrington his full attention. As she began her lecture, the young Hufflepuff was instantly drawn in. The death of a star?He agreed with her for saying it was sad, but he didn't understand what she meant by fascinating until she further elaborated on the subject throughout the lesson.

The lecture gave him many different thoughts to ponder. It was all so amazing, and it made Oliver feel so small in the scheme of everything. He didn't want to admit it it, but it was actually a little scary, and he made sure to thank Professor Harrington before gathering his things and taking leave.

Questioning Everything | Honeydukes Assistant | fifth year

[justify]Name: Jerara Tapsell
Year: 4th
Lesson #: 3 & 4

Lesson 3
Jerara’s workload always got very heavy in the third week of term, he had a lot of work to do. Though he had gotten better at managing it, there was still a lot and he was trying to ensure that he would have enough time to spare to go to the halloween stuff with Ellie. Jerara knew he would just have to work twice as hard during this week. He needed to get everything done, be on top of everything so that he could enjoy himself relatively stress free. The teen would try his best with this, but only time would tell if he could manage it. It did mean that he was spending every moment up until he absolutely had to get ready for class reading and working on homework. However, it did come round to that time again, and Jerara had to put down what he was doing and instead focus on finding out what classes he had that day, and figuring out what bits and pieces he needed for each one of them of course always remembering his wand. Without it, he knew it would be a bad day. When he was done, he made sure to get the last of his homework and take it with him to complete during the day and went to class.

Jerara walked into the astronomy classroom and took his usual spot in the room. His gaze shifted towards the front curious as to what they would be doing in this lesson. As it turned out they would be covering blackholes. Which seemed like a fairly normal thing to cover in such a class. He glanced towards the professor who was beginning the lesson and to the device that would supposedly create a blackhole in the classroom. He thought that kind of magic was wild, that there were real spells that would allow a person to do that, without any of the dangers that would follow muggles when they tried to do something similar. Was it perhaps just not real, it was a mock blackhole, functioning in the same way but just not producing the right results. He took down a few notes of what the professor had been saying, being sure to get the important points down, then he stared at the blackhole as the paperclip was sucked into it. He felt slightly odd, unsure of how real it was and annoyed that there just seemed to be quite a lot of spells which they just would never cover. He packed away his things and left the room, happy that the lesson hadn't been too bad, but left with dozens of questions about it.
Professor Note: Thanks, O!

lesson 4
Becoming involved with Ellie had perhaps been the best decision that Jerara had made, it was fun, it was enjoyable, it was a nice break from all the work that he had to do for all of his classes. It was just a little different from everything he had ever done. Of course with the amount of classes that the boy had to do, it was increasingly hard to find all the time to see her, between all that they did, and the fact they were in different houses just made things more tricky. He understood why so many people who were in the same house ended up dating, it was simply easier. He didn’t even get the luxury of sitting with her in all the classes they had, instead he just had to put up with it. The boy was in fact getting ready for the day, he had gathered up his books and was placing them into his bag, he was gathering all of the homework he had done for all the classes, most of which done after the fun he’d had at the feast. As much as he had to catch up, it had been a good night. With that thought lingering in his mind, Jerara grabbed the last few things that he would need and left for the class.

Jerara walked into the astronomy classroom, he had been rather impressed with the last class, the blackhole in the classroom, he'd gotten a few muggle astronomy books from the library, having found them deep in the astronomy book depths, and had confirmed all he had thought about how incredible this level of magic was in a machine. Where did someone learn something like that? Why weren't they taught that, it was as useless as knowing what theories surrounded stonehenge, so what it did it matter really. The boy took his usual spot in the classroom and looked to the front to see the ending of the last lesson, so see it back again. However, it seemed first they had a little lecture. A little annoyed by the fact they had a lecture he decided that he would make notes after it. He didn't need to write it down immediately, he could remember what he needed to and write it down afterwards. The boy was glad the lecture the woman gave was short and they got to bringing back the paper clip. He watched as the blackhole appeared and it changed into a white hole, with light flooding the room. He couldn't believe what he was watching, and suddenly the paperclip was back in the professor's hand. He couldn't really believe it. However, that was the lesson over. He packed up his things and left the room, not perfectly satisfied with what they had learned, he wished he could know how to do it.

[justify]Name: Signy Forstrom
Year: 4th
Lesson #: 3

Signy’s workload from this year was definitely far more than the last, but she was thriving from it. She was pushing herself to work better and more efficiently. She had just the right amount of classes that she could handle. She was working herself well, and enjoying the rewards of it. She had never been overly academic, but she worked for the grades that she received and she was always happy with them. There was nothing in her mind that told her she wasn’t doing well at school. There were people far smarter than she was, but she was lovely being able to work as hard as she was and getting the grades she was getting. She was proud, her parents were proud and she knew that she was putting her all into what she was doing. Signy was really enjoying the challenges that her classes presented to her, the new things they were learning. It filled her with enthusiasm, with excitement, with a drive in the morning. With that being said, the girl had been getting her things together for the day ahead, making sure she had all her books, making sure she had everything she would need for a good and productive day.

Signy had always enjoyed looking up at the stars, so it was no wonder that she really enjoyed the class that revolved around them. Well, she enjoyed it, would never do anything with it but enjoyed it nonetheless. It was the sort of class that was the right amount of lectures and information without being overwhelming. She arrived at the classroom and quickly took her seat, pulling out her notes and her quills and getting ready for whatever the professor was about to tell them. It wasn't long after the rest of the class was settled that she did begin and they would be covering blackholes. Something Signy could admit she knew very little about, so she leaned forward in her chair as she took the notes careful so that she didn't miss any of it. She was very surprised when they would do more than just learn about one, they would actually see one. That was amazing. She had no idea that that could be done. Signy made sure to keep her notes about what blackholes tidy as the professor brought their attention away from the lecture itself and to the machine. After a few taps the blackhole appeared and the professor made a paperclip disappear into it. She couldn't help but be so excited about it's return. With that the lesson was brought to an end and she was able to leave.

Lesson(s): 1

With Patrick's sister having graduated, the Hufflepuff was quite anxious for what was ahead. It meant that he didn't have someone to look up to and ask for help when taking notes for classes. On top of that, his step-sister had now joined the school and he wasn't sure whether or not to be happy about that. After all, he wondered how she would cope with everything and hoped that she wouldn't annoy him too much as he tried to study. It was hard to get rid of distractions and he hoped that her being there wouldn't make much difference to anything, especially considering she was in both a different house and year. The boy packed everything he needed for the day and headed straight to class with his yearmates.

As Patrick entered the Astronomy classroom he picked his usual seat in the room. The boy hadn't done very well in the subject last year as he did not find it that interesting but he took out his writing equipment and sat up straight in his seat as the professor began the lesson. He tried to take points throughout the lesson, writing down as much as he could about stars and how the sun was one of them. It was almost as if the sun ruled all of the stars in the sky considering it was so much bigger than all of the other stars and Patrick wondered if this was true and hoped that the professor would tell the class how the sun came to be in future lessons. At the end of the lesson the professor gave them homework and the Hufflepuff boy made sure to write it down, not wanting to accidentally forget about it. After all, he wasn't sure how much trouble the professor would put him in if he did and he didn't feel like finding out any time soon. He followed his classmates out of the class, heading straight to his next one.

Lesson #: Five

After the experiments with the black and white holes, October was anxious about what they would be entering the Astronomy classroom to see this week. Although the experiment had turned out fine and nobody got hurt, it had still felt unsafe to her, and she was a little more worried that they would be doing something even more dangerous to follow up. It was a relief to October to see the classroom looking normal this week, no bizarre black hole machine in sight. She took her usual seat at the front and began to take notes as Professor Harrington began the lesson, paying close attention.

The concept of wormholes was one October was somewhat familiar with, having done a bit of reading about them in her own time when she was studying black holes. The whole concept was a fascinating one, and raised a lot of questions about what it would be like to pass through a wormhole, what the experience could possibly be like. She was excited to hear Professor Harrington go into more detail about it, though the word spaghettification sent a shiver down her spine. The process sounded horrible, and she didn't want to think about what it would feel like to be stretched and stretched and stretched until you died. A little unsettled by the mental picture, October was relieved when class finished. She packed up her things, making sure the notes she had taken were comprehensive, and thanked Professor Harrington before heading back to her dorm, suppressing yawns as she found herself quite tired.

Astronomy Lesson Five

A wormhole is a theoretical tunnel that connects two different points in spacetime. Although they are currently an unobservable and undetectable phenomenon to human science, they are consistent with commonly accepted principles of physics. There are multiple different theories about how wormholes may work, including both the idea of a one directional hole from a black hole to a white hole, which would be impossible to travel in the opposite direction without stabilising the energy in some way. Another theory is that black holes connect multiple universes, and that in the wormhole in the middle you would be able to see light from both universes at once, if you were able to survive the conditions there.

There are other theories that consider the possibility of wormholes through which you could safely travel both ways plausible, or even likely, and the matter remains the subject of much debate amongst physicists. Many people are eager to study and understand black holes and wormholes further as a possible useful form of space or even time travel, as an accelerated tunnel between two distant points in the universe would make it much more feasible for people to travel the universe without having to spend an extended time in stasis. For now, though, we know so little about wormholes that this all must sadly remain entirely theoretical.

Nixon Mercury
Member Avatar
Lonely • Lil' Astronomer • HM Reporter • Accio! Photographer

[justify]Name: Nixon Mercury
Year: Second
Lesson #: 1-5

Lesson One:

Nixon knew most things related to astronomy better than he knew himself, having grown up with two astronomer parents that were entirely dedicated to their work. Reading their research notes, as well as anything else of theirs he could get his hands on was a norm for him to the point that actually attending astronomy classes for another year seemed outlandish to him. First year astronomy had been confusing enough, and his lack of ability to adapt to a classroom environment as well as learn things he knew to be basics was his downfall making him seem less well versed in astronomy as he truly was. That year, Nixon planned to do better in the subject both for his own confidence and to make his parents proud. He could not wait to see their happy faces when he showed them his grades and he let this be his motivation as he arrived to the astronomy classroom and sat down, smiling up at the professor. The woman greeted everyone before explaining the subject of that semester was stars and explaining a few things about stars in brief detail. Nixon nodded along to what the professor was saying, understanding it as easily as he understood the alphabet and not feeling the need to take notes. Shortly after the woman finished her explanation, the lesson was dismissed. Nixon left the room feeling pleased he was able to pay attention to the lesson, and he was curious to see what else the professor was going to talk about in later lessons.
Professor Note: Thank you, O!

Lesson Two:
Nixon arrived to his second astronomy lesson curious to see what the professor was going to teach the class that day. He sat down and smiled at the woman as she explained the class would be looking at various displays learning about different planets. This was all still very basic knowledge for Nixon and more or less common sense to him, but he tried not to show how he felt as he walked around the room, observing each display and reading the information provided about each planet. He smirked when he reached the planet 'Mercury' always finding it funny he shared a surname with a planet no matter what context it was in. He almost felt like bragging about it, but thought it would be inappropriate and he instead chose to keep to himself as he slowly observed the rest of the stations. Soon enough the professor dismissed the lesson and Nixon thanked the woman before he left the classroom. He hoped that during his next lesson he would actually learn something and not be made to revise what he already knew, but he did also understand that not everyone in the class had his astronomy knowledge so he was still happy to be patient.
Professor Note: Thank you, O!

Lesson Three:
Nixon arrived to his third astronomy lesson, smiled at the professor, and sat down at one of the desks. They were rearranged but he figured that was for a reason as he faced the now empty middle of the room. The professor soon revealed the reason the middle of the room was blank, providing a projection of the horse head nebula that was scarily realistic. She stepped forward, explaining how a star was born and zooming in the projection as she spoke. Nixon leant his head on his hand as he listened to her speak, focusing more on the projection as it was interesting to him to see the birth of a star up close. That was at least something he had not seen projected and only something he had read about in his parents' notes so it was refreshing and awesome to see it before his own eyes. The woman continued to explain how stars were formed and Nixon nodded along throughout the rest of the lesson, more interested in that one than his other lessons that semester as it had information that was somewhat new to him. He frowned when the projection ended, but quickly looked towards the professor as she continued to speak. By the time the class was dismissed Nixon was fully immersed in the content of the lesson almost not wanting to leave so soon. However he bit the bullet and followed his classmates out of the room, hoping that when he returned for another astronomy lesson he would be just as intrigued as he was that day.
Professor Note: Thank you, O!

Lesson Four:
Nixon happily and promptly arrived to his fourth astronomy lesson, wanting to experience more and hoping that he would be again able to watch another projection of a nebula. He was disappointed to see the desks lined up normally and frowned when he sat down but he tried not to let the bad feelings linger for too long and soon looked up to the professor, smiling at the kind woman with his usual enthusiasm. She explained the way the death of a star worked and Nixon nodded along, still sad that he was not able to see a projection of it but interested in the subject nonetheless. He giggled to himself when the professor mentioned the sun changing and becoming larger, swallowing close by planets like mercury as it was still funny to him to hear his own surname. He soon composed himself again and nodded throughout the rest of the lesson, sad when the professor eventually dismissed the class and he was made to leave the room. Despite knowing a lot about astronomy already and viewing the lessons as slightly pointless for himself, Nixon did find hearing about astronomy related things comforting whenever he was homesick and that was the reason he was sad to leave the room that day. Hopefully his mood would improve for his next lesson.
Professor Note: Thank you, O!

Lesson Five:
Nixon felt energetic that day and this energy did not falter as he arrived to his astronomy lesson. Upon arriving to the room and sitting down, the professor instructed the class to take notes. Despite knowing he would not need to take any notes in astronomy for at least the next year, Nixon got out a piece of parchment as well as a quill and ink to humor the professor and make it look like he was actually doing something productive. The woman quickly began to explain different types of stars and Nixon nodded along, writing on the parchment although he was merely scribbling doodles rather than actual notes. He was sure he could always consult one of the many notebooks he had taken from his parents when he left for hogwarts if he actually needed the information. The lesson seemed to drag on for ages and Nixon was relieved when the woman dismissed the class as he was worried he would fall asleep. He packed up his belongings and left the room, smiling politely to the professor on his way out.
Professor Note: Thank you, O!
