Professor Kalif Styx
Member Avatar
Patriarch of the Zhefarovich Family, Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor, Slytherin Head of House, Former Death Eater, Legilimens, Occlumens

Professor Styx stood in front of the darkened classroom, the way that he preferred it. This year, the curriculum was not at all going to be enjoyable for the Fifth years. The previous year had been rather enjoyable for them, and so will the next ones onward if they passed his OWL. Professor Styx looked at the time table and could see that the fifth years would be here at any moment. The doors opened, allowing light into the classroom for a sheer moment, to allow his students to enter. The Defence Against the Dark Arts professor was one to not tolerate much from students. To his amazement, his Slytherins had not been acting that bad this year, luckily for them. Once everyone was in, the doors shut with a snap, and then the professor looked over his pupils before he started up the class without so much of a greeting, which they should be used to if they have been taught for too long by the Slytherin Head of House.

"You all know how important this year is, so I will not go on about it either. You know what this course is about, and first and foremost, you will be learning about Curses this year. This will be needed if you want to proceed into the NEWT level of my class." With a snap of his gloved hands, a piece of chalk wrote on the chalkboard 'Discussing Curses thoroughly'. This would be the start, and to let them know how this class will have minimal wand usage. Not unless Professor Styx changed his mind, but that was very rare for the man to have his mind changed without just reasons. The chalk did not stop there, as it went down below the first three words and wrote out, 'Babbling Curse'. With another snap of his fingers, the chalk fell back to the tray lifeless. "I expect most of you to know about this curse, perhaps even know how to conjure it."

The name of the Curse itself spoke for itself. "The curse causes the victim to babble incoherently until the curse wears off or is lifted. Finite will stop this curse, however having yourself say the spell while you are under the curse is the issue. If you are babbling on, you won't be able to use Finite to save yourself. Next year, if you pass the OWL exam for this class, you will be trained to be able to lift the curse by using non-verbal spells. Otherwise, you will have to wait until someone grants you mercy and lifts the curse from you." Professor Styx looked at the time table, and he looked at the students once more. They seemed to be grasping the lesson well, and he would not have them practice the spell in here. It would give everyone, including himself, a headache from all the babble. "Class dismissed, you have no homework tonight." It was unexpected, but Professor Styx was done with the lesson, there was nothing else to go on about. The doors opened to allow the students to leave as he sat down behind his desk.

Assignment: Roleplay the lesson.

Evelyn was on her way to Defence Against the Dark Arts and wasn't really looking forward to seeing Styx again, but the blonde thought of the subject as important so she could not drop it. Evelyn felt the pressure of this year and mostly she was confident but she wanted to do good. She got everything that she wanted, being prefect and the best boyfriend ever. But it was also some pressure to drag along. She didn't want to dissapoint anyone. Evelyn looked at Styx for a moment and gave up hope that he ever would change his hair. She had learned her lesson, but still felt the urge to tell him. What if he was getting blind or didn't have any mirrors? If someone was ugly Evelyn wanted that someone told her too and would not lie. But the blonde felt it was what Styx deserved. He was always so mean to everyone and depressing or something. Evelyn found her spot in the front and sighted for a moment. She was the first in the classroom so hoped there would be more students soon. The blonde always thought it was creepy being alone with that man. Noah would be there soon she thought.

Evelyn made everything ready so she could take notes of the class from today. The blonde read the Babbling Curse on the bord and knew what it was. She had prepared herself good again on this year, and maybe even better than before. She was confident about what she could do and show, but still she felt pressure. It was a quiet boring lesson the blonde thought and perhaps Styx did it on purpose. At least she had made her notes and prepared herself on the homework that would come. But that wasn't the case? What was going on? Styx didn't gave any homework. This was the second class where she had no homework for. That ment more time to spend with Noah. The blonde smiled and left the room with her friends.

Evangeline felt pressure. She needed to better if she wanted to future that she had in front of her. The brunette knew which subjects to follow and what she had to score. Evangeline entered the classroom and found a spot in the middle. She went sitting by herself and scanned the room. There was a blonde girl sitting in front and she had heard of the girl before. But she was way too excited for Evangeline. What she did knew was who she dating was: Noah Kingsley. He was from her house. Evangeline was suprised by how much she knew, but observering was a good quality of her and she liked it more than talking to people. As she listened to Styx she made notes of the important stuff. Her head of house was not joking she knew, he was serious about this year and she knew how important it was. Evangeline just wanted to get the hell out of England or at least with her parents. If she would be graduated they had nothing to say about her anymore. She could finally work on her future and have none yelling parents around her.

The snake writed down the babbling curse and wanted to read more about it. She prepared herself for class, but she figured it couldn't harm to read a bit more. Evangeline didn't thought of reading as something bad, she liked it. Books were interesting and more safe than people. Although she really felt the need to talk to people, because she was kinda a loner. Evangeline wanted to have friends, but had no idea how to get them or how to act. They didn't got any homework so the brunette could just prepare slowly for the other classes. She left the room when they were dismissed and took her things with her.

[justify]Having not managed to really pull up her grades in the way that she had hoped that she could, the part-veela was tired of always studying for no reward, but this was her OWL year, she couldn’t not be studying at this point. She needed to be. It left her feeling unhappy but trying her best to make it seem like she wasn’t really that unhappy. The only good thing was her continued participation in quidditch, that was easy, it was good and it was definitely something she could do. Her sporty nature had lended itself well to quidditch. The first week back at school was always quite easy, she didn’t have to do much during it. She could get herself back into studying a little, she could get her routine back and everything would have to go smoothly, after all it was the first week of her OWL year. The part-veela walked into the dorm room from her run and very quickly got showered and changed into her uniform. She brushed the auburn hair from her eyes as she put her tie on, and then prepared the things she would need for the day, eventually having everything together to leave the dorm for the classroom.

Noemie reached the defence against the dark arts classroom and took her usual spot in the room. Her experience in this class in the last year had been odd, she liked what they'd taught, but she had also not particularly wanted to enjoy it. But she just focused, kept her gaze on the man at the front as he began talking. Introducing them back to the class in this important OWL year and what they would be studying. Curses seemed liked it would be more fun than some of the other things they had been supposed to be studying over the past few years. She would enjoy this year of defence against the dark arts. She wrote down the word that was on the board, babbling curse. she wrote down what the man was saying about it with a small smile on her face, imagining the spell in her head. It would be pretty funny for a bit but then get increasingly not funny. With that however, they were dismissed, without homework, so Noemie left the class and headed outside, to make the most of the rest of the day.

Sheltered and clueless | Chaser | Ollivanders Assistant

[justify]It was always wonderous to him that come the end of the holidays how pleased he would be to be back at school. The teen had grown to really hate his job and resent that he had to even work during the break when it wasn’t like he needed the extra money. His family was rich, he didn’t need to have this job and yet, he continued to have it. The slytherin had been fairly pleased with himself in the last semester, even with how much he had gotten into trouble to teen had managed to get rather good grades, despite it all. They weren’t great grades but he had achieved them by his own means and he was happy with what he’d done, even if it was pointless, he was going to end up in his father’s company working every day in a store that didn’t require him to have decent grades, he would inherit it regardless. But, he felt like maybe he would argue his father down and he could do something else if he didn’t do horribly. The slytherin was thinking of this as he tiredly got his bag together, despite all of these thoughts of the future actually working for any of it would still be difficult. Eventually he was ready to leave and left for the classroom.

Rory felt somewhat awkward about returning to the defence against the dark arts class, on the one hand, he did well in the class but on the other he'd once again gotten into trouble with him so he didn't particularly want to face the man. But he liked the class, and so Rory turned up and just took his seat, sending a small wink to Evelyn as he walked past her. The boy didn't have to wait long for the man to get started, he told them what they would be covering over the next few weeks and Rory was certainly happy to learn more than a few curses that he could then use on certain people. He knew exactly what sort he would use and to whom he would cast them upon. The boy wrote down the spell that the professor told them about, and writing down a few notes about it. He followed easily knowing that his little sister was certain the sort of person who didn't need that sort of spell. It was a blessedly short lesson and the professor finished up, allowing them to leave without homework. So miracles did happen.

Unlike with most of her subjects, Amber knew Defence Against the Dark Arts would have the same teacher for the fifth year and up. She wasn't thrilled about that, if she was entirely honest. Professor Styx no longer scared her like he used to when she was a first year, but she still wasn't a big fan of him. Especially after last year, which she had hated enough to consider dropping the subject alltogether. In the end she had eventually decided against that, as she figured it was too important a subject to drop. But she wasn't looking foward to this year She took a seat in the front of the classroom as she usually did and listened to Professor Styx introduce what they were going to do this semester. Learning about curses sounded close to what they had been doing last year, but at least she figured they wouldn't have to cover the unforgivable ones anymore.

She kept her eyes on he blackboard as the chalk wrote down the words 'Babbling Curse'. She started taking notes on the profesosr's explanation, though it wasn't too much new information. That saying finite while under the spell would be an issue made sense, and she was surprised to find out they would be using non-verbal spells in as little as a year. The class was over soon after, and it was even more unexpected that they had no homework at all. She gathered her things and then caught up with Evelyn, chatting happily to her friend as they headed out of the classroom.

[justify]Kaia was beginning to feel a little lonely as she didn't have many friends and those that she did have Kaia hadn't hung out with in a while. She was pleased when her younger biological sister had been sorted into Ravenclaw. Now though, the fifth year had decided that she would make more of an effort than ever to get to know those in her year and hopefully befriend them. Not to mention the fact that she had to do much better in her subjects than previous years as this year, OWLs were at the end of the year and those counted. Kaia was tired of ending on a bad note every year in terms of her grades.

She had Defence Against the Dark Arts next, so she gathered her books for the lesson and soon she was sitting in the classroom, with her notes out and quill ready to take additional notes. Kaia was hoping to get distracted from her loneliness and get right into the swing of things, her studies. The Babbling Curse sounded more of a jinx than a curse but the fifth year could see why it had been named that. A jinx could easily be reversed, while a Curse could not. It also sounded like an annoying curse and not as serious as the others mentioned. It was a surprise to hear Professor Styx tell the class there wasn't any homework, as Kaia was used to receiving it from him, but she shrugged and packed up, before she made her way out of the classroom once they were allowed to leave.

With such a scary Professor, Ainsley wasn't quite sure why she had stuck with Defense Against the Dark Arts so long. It was a scary class all around, with such dark, unsettling content, and the only thing that stopped Ainsley from dropping the class was a little part of her mind whispering that if these dark arts really did exist it was only sensible to know how to defend yourself from them. So, with another year of learning scary, nasty, horrible things ahead of her, Ainsley took her seat in the classroom quietly, getting her things ready to take notes. If there was one class she didn't want to be ill prepared for, it was this one.

As Professor Styx began talking Ainsley started taking notes, making sure to write down everything he said carefully. The sound of this curse really unsettled her, and if this was how they were starting the year off, Ainsley wasn't sure what to expect for the rest of the lessons. It also unsettled her that they would learn about the curse, but nothing about how to lift it for a whole nother year. It just made her feel useless and defenseless. Making up her mind to look it up in her own time so she wouldn't be completely defenseless if someone cast it on her, Ainsley took notes for the rest of the class, packing up her things when they were done. She was surprised that there was no homework today, but it was a welcome surprise, and she left the room quickly, deciding to do her own research now, since there wasn't any homework to take up her time.

Don't Talk About It

Louisa had returned to Hogwarts with renewed interest in her studies. She'd spent the holidays talking at length with her mother about what she wanted out of life, and had decided definitively that her goal was to be a healer. She hadn't shared this with anyone yet, but had read up on what subjects she would need at and what level. She knew her academic record wasn't the best at Hogwarts. She'd spent the majority of her time here resenting the place, but now, with a goal in mind, she found herself almost being glad to be back. She still wore her wand in a drawstring pouch around her neck; a quirk which her classmates has ceased to comment upon at this stage. She didn't dislike it as she once had, at least not to the same degree. She'd learned to separate thoughts of her father from those things which were necessary for her to learn.

Louisa liked Professor Styx. There was no nonsense with him, no false pretenses of being "approachable" or "a friend." He was their teacher, and he did his job. There was something refreshing about that honesty. He was probably her second favourite teacher, next to Professor Pendleton, who she wouldn't have this year unfortunately. As he began to speak, Louisa took careful note of his words. She didn't really understand why she needed Defense Against the Dark Arts, but it was an interesting class, and after reading about the Scitorari, she was thankful for the chance to learn how to protect herself, and her mother. The babbling curse didn't sound like the worst thing in the world, a bit tiresome, but not particularly dangerous. This thought process was reflected in her notes. Surprised by the lack of homework, she resolved to read up on it, figure out why it was considered "dark" when really it sounded like a bit of a prank.

[justify]Flavio expected nothing more than a dark classroom and professor styx's to the point form of teaching and as he arrived to his first defence against the dark arts class of the year his expectations were met. He just hoped the subject of DADA in his fifth year was not about the unforgiveable curses and that the class would not be again made to experience such terrible things in person. After sitting down near the front of the class and getting out parchment for his notes, Flavio looked up to the professor discuss the importance of their owls briefly. His eyes then moved to the chalk writing on the blackboard as it spelled out 'Discussing Curses thoroughly'. He was relieved there was not more on the unforgivable curses, and thought he would be able to stomach learning about less intense curses during the semester so after feeling his shoulders relax, Flavio continued to note down what the professor was saying.

The man explained the babbling curse, and the difficulty in reversing the curse if it was cast on you without using non verbal magic due to the curse causing the victim to babble incoherently. Flavio wrote that information down, underlining it with a note about non verbal magic as it seemed an important aspect for both that curse and the overall course during the next few years. The lesson was in general interesting and Flavio wanted to read more about non verbal magic and curses in his spare time, so after the class was given homework and dismissed the ravenclaw ventured to the library to read up on those exact subjects. He could not wait to learn more during his next DADA lesson.

♥Probably Reading in the Library♥

[justify]Week one was here and November was excited to be back for the first time. Her Aunt was going to be around all the time and her cousin Maggy was now a first year in her house which was very excited. She had already spent a lot of her time showing her cousin around the castle that she would have spent in the library which made her feel slightly less prepared as she headed to class that day. Going down to the first floor from the Hufflepuff Common Room November headed into her first Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom.

Sitting down November made sure she wasn't near Amber not wanting to be bothered by the Hufflepuff Prefect. She couldn't believe Amber was their girl Prefect for their year. One of the other girls in the house surely would have been a better choice, like Clementine if that was the girl's name. November never really talked to that girl much so she wasn't sure. Listening the the Professor was sort of a drag. Basically don't have this curse casted on you because of the babbling. She was surprised he didn't ask for a volunteer, she thought it would be sort of funny seeing Amber babble as she would be the one to volunteer, always trying to be every teacher's pet. November took notes and once the class was over she headed out giving a wave to Flavio before heading off to see how her cousin was doing.

Hayden was glad that there wouldn't be a new Professor teaching Defence against the dark arts as there seemed to be in every other subject. Professor Styx was by no means a warm man, not that Hayden cared about such things, but he was a good teacher and that was the important thing. He made his way into the classroom and took his seat, after learning all about unforgivable curses the previous year Hayden was curious to see how Professor Styx would top that. When the words 'Babbling Curse' appeared on the blackboard Hayden was a little disappointed. Sure it was a cool curse and it was a little more sinister than the name suggested given that the victim couldn't simply cast finite on themselves to end it but even so after their previous year, it seemed almost tame.

The prospect of learning to repel the curse using nonverbal magic was certainly interesting and something Hayden looked forward to tackling in the coming years but in the current lesson, Professor Styx didn't really give them any new information. He hoped that their fifth year wasn't going to be all reviews in preparation for their OWLs. He did want to learn something new. When Professor Styx finished the lesson Hayden put away his wand and blank sheet of parchment and made his way out of the classroom.
