Professor Kalif Styx
Member Avatar
Patriarch of the Zhefarovich Family, Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor, Slytherin Head of House, Former Death Eater, Legilimens, Occlumens

Professor Styx entered the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom earlier than the students, and he leaned against the desk. His arms folded across his chest and he opened the doors to allow the second years to enter the darker classroom with the windows blocked by shades. Professor Styx did not think that they would enjoy this class any longer. However, he would ensure that they all would learn however. He made sure that everyone was present before he said in his cold, monotone voice, "I am Professor Styx in case some of you all transferred in, and the rest of the students should remember me from the previous year. To begin, this year you will be learning the effects of prank-like jinxes." His thin lips almost curled up into a sneer when he thought of that, as he personally did not enjoy the effects and childishness that sometimes resulted in jinxes. "And you will also learn how to defend against them though many will be similar to last year."

After explaining the syllabus of this year to the students, Professor Styx continued to remain where he was, and he continued, "Can anyone tell me what a curse is?" A student raised their hand, and Professor Styx gestured his gloved hand toward the student to allow them to continue. Once they answered the question correctly, he continued to question the students, "Now who can explain what a jinx is and the difference between it and a curse, if one applies?" Another student raised their hand and Professor Styx motioned for them to answer, and they got the question right as well. Now everyone should know what a jinx and a curse is. The former Death Eater turned to the blackboard and the chalk wrote up their homework which was list three curses and three jinxes as well as their effects. After the chalk finished, it dropped to the holder, and Professor Styx turned his eyes to the class.

"I want you to copy this down, and turn it in to me by your next lesson. You are dismissed." Professor Styx waved his hand at the doors and they parted open to allow the students to leave the classroom. Professor Styx watched them leave, and thought that they should be thankful that the assignment was all that they received. Luckily, he was in a good mood enough to not torture them - for now at least.

Assignment: Roleplay the lesson, and do the homework assigned. You all should know the proper heading to use.

Alexis entered the Defense Against the Dark classroom. As much as she enjoyed the lessons and everything she had learned, she particularly disliked the classroom atmosphere. True that the class was about Dark Arts, however, this didn't really mean that the place of learning should be dark and solemn if she could call it that. After greeting Professor Styx, she made her way for her usual seat near to the back but in the middle of the room. She deliberated whether she should take out her book for the class or not. Settling for the latter choice, she folded her hands on the table as she waited for her other classmates to come in. She just faced the board for she did not want to look at the closed windows nor wanting to roam her gaze around the dark classroom.

The Ravenclaw did not have to wait long as a student after student came in. Soon enough, Professor Styx began the first day with his usual cold, monotone voice. Alexis almost shuddered as he looked like pleased upon the mention of jinxes and curses. She thought the class would end at that but was surprised to hear him ask a question on curse's definition. Alexis even surprised herself more when she raised her hand. The teacher gestured to her direction and she had to look at her back to check if it was her who was called. Certain that it was her, she stood up and answered, "Curse is a tool of the Dark Arts and is one of the known seven spell types. It was also the worst kind of Dark Magic.", she paused to clear her throat," It is also used with the intention of harming, controlling or even killing its victim." She sat down, pleased with herself. He asked another question which another student answered. He then set their homework and dismissed the class. Alexis dutifully copied it down before packing up and heading for the Great Hall which was the nearest place for her to do her homework.

[justify]Knowing he had to get near perfect grades again, filled Simon with that same drive as he always got at the beginning of the semester. He wanted to get started, he wanted to push forward, he wanted to be the best. He was more than certain that within this year he would manage it. He would come out on top over everyone else in the school. It would be hard but he was sure of himself and confidence was half the battle wasn’t it? His several point diagram of why he wanted what he wanted, and how he would achieve it was clear on his mind. The Ravenclaw gathered his things for the day, eager to start on what he needed to and set off immediately. He had to be prompt and he needed to be ready for this year, for this, for whatever it might bring him. The auburn haired boy put the last of what he needed in, the prep work he’d already done, the books he would need and the wand was in his pocket, ready to pulled out at any turn when required to. The boy’s confidence in himself for this year was high and he could do well in it.

Simon walked into the defence against the dark arts classroom, feeling a little timid about it. The boy had done well in his first year of the class, but he didn't feel particularly confident with this professor. Though the strictness was welcome it was almost just too much. He took a spot in the room and got himself ready for the class. Putting his books out, bringing out his notes and writing utensils, they weren't going to mess about doing nothing in this classroom. He was curious as to what they would be covering and finding that it would be jinxes and curses was interesting, he didn't know what the difference really was, he'd read a little about it, but that had appeared a little unclear to him. He listened as others gave the answers to his questions, cursing silently that he hadn't done enough work to answer such questions. he copied down what had been written on the board behind the professor and was surprised that was it. The lesson was over there. He made sure what he'd written down was correct before putting his books away and leaving the room.

Not a Twin | Perfectionist | Well-Organized | Swimmer | Controlled | Socially Awkward

Gabriella felt some reluctance at the idea of classes starting again. She enjoyed getting to work hard for a goal, but she also tended to feel an immense pressure whenever the exams were as much as mentioned. She wanted desperately to do better this year than she had done previously. The perfectionist in her hated that she hadn't gotten the best grades, even if she could admit to herself she had worked really hard.

Unlike most of her peers, Gabriella wasn't exactly scared of Professor Styx. She kind of liked how serious he was, as he didn't treat them like little children like Professor Pendleton did. She knew it was a bad idea to get on his bad side, but that should be the case for every professor. Students shouldn't get in trouble or break rules, that was simple. Gabriella took her seat in the classroom and took out her parchment and quill. Her mouth twitched in distaste when she heard they would be covering prank-like jinxes. Those sounded childish and largely useless, and she dreaded spending an entire semester learning about them. When the professor asked his question, Gabriella raised her hand but sighed in annoyance when a Ravenclaw was picked instead. But she got picked for the second question. She cleared her throat before speaking. "A jinx is a milder type of spell than a curse, and isn't usually able to cause long lasting harm to the victim. So the difference between the two is basically how much damage they cause and how strong the spells are in general." She hoped her answer was satisfactory, but was sure Professor Styx wouldn't hesitate to tell her if she was wrong. She copied down homework on the blackboard before packing up her things. She followed some of her fellow Hufflepuffs out of the classroom once the lesson was over. She would work on the homework as soon as she had a free moment.

Spider Twin | Logical | Quiet | Creepy

Theodore Westwick was not pleased to be back at Hogwarts. He had enjoyed the holidays a lot, just spending time with his brother in heir house and the woods surrounding it. Now that he had to return to the noisy castle, he felt frustrated and angry. No matter where he went, annoying people were there. He was glad Edmund was with him, but still showed his bad mood clearly on his face.

At least this professor Styx wasn't horribly cheerful, and actually kind of interesting. Even if Defence Against the Dark Arts was a bit of a joke so far. They were coddled and shielded from the actual bad parts, because the professor's probably thought they wouldn't be able to handle anything really dark. He and Edmund would enjoy it a lot more if they got into more detail, but he figured that the others would complain. All the other simpleminded sensitive students seemed to be just here to ruin Theodore's fun. Professor Styx introduced himself for some reason, and then asked if anyone could tell him what a curse was. That annoying Alexis girl got to answer, and as she replied it sounded like she had just memorized her textbook. How dull. Some Hufflepuff answered the other question, with an equally dull answer. The boy wrote down the homework for next week, and was glad to make his way out of the classroom soon after. Until the later years, this class would probably be a waste of time.

[justify]Some parts of last year were a blur to Chante, but she remembered working very hard in almost all her lesson. Just the professor, some left an impression on her or not. Professor Styx definitely did. There was no forgetting him, ever. Chante wasn't as excited to come to class as she usually would be. It wasn't just Professor Styx she didn't much like seeing, it was the classroom. It was too dark. Very little light came in the room. Natural light were blocked off by shades. No wonder he was so pale, she thought. Chante took out a blank parchment and proceed to write down whatever he discuss today.

Professor asked the question about curses and jinxes. What they were and how they were different. Chante listen in closely, because other than one jinx spell her father taught her almost a year ago, jinxes and curses were rarely discussed around the dinner table. Any sort of magic like that, that seemed harmful never seem to be spoken out loud at home. And then there were the spells and charms of the total opposites. Still, her parents considered talking about it a lot as pointless. They figured Chante would be learning them soon at Hogwarts. After his questions were answered, professor assigned them with homework. Chante jotted that down as well.

[justify]Joshua already established that he didn't belong in Ravenclaw. He doubt the hat's decision every day ever since last year. He was doubting himself this year around. Tia would probably be angry with him. She understands his struggles but at the same time hoped he had rise above it already. If they can survive this long without their father finding them, she would push him to see just how brilliant they really were. Joshua conveyed it as luck and nothing more. Yet, he sat in this classroom dressed in blue and silver tie. It doesn't help him that he knows very little about everything that surrounds him. Professor Styx better not expect too much for him. Like the dullness of this room, his performance level would completely flat line. Maybe. If there was a way to shell shock out of this funk, there may be room for possibilities.

For the meantime, he could learn from his friend Alexis. If they were friends. She answered Styx's first question and got it right. Joshua misplaced his worried stares for an innocent smile. He bit his lip, listen to the other girl answer his question, she got right. He didn't pay much attention to her as much as he did with Alexis. Joshua went back to staring ahead, reading the newly written assignment on the board. His aunt, he believed knew of these curses. He wanted to say he observed the woman take after someone who had been paralyzed. Could it had been a curse? Maybe. Joshua made sure he remember to ask the next time he saw her. It happen years ago, he was very young then. Joshua stood up and left with the class upon dismissal.

Empathetic | Sincere | In a world of Silence | Zhaklina's Clone | The Science.

Mhairi was just about getting used to this business learning magic. It hadn't been an easy first year at Hogwarts, but now that she was in a routine with her quill taking the notes from the Professor that she would later back track, she at least felt as though she had something that worked for her. She'd spent most of her life being dependent on her twin, and her parents had been very proud of her over the holidays to hear that she'd managed to more or less make it without too much help from her Slytherin sister. Now that she had returned to school for her second year, she was determined to get stuck in to learning some new magic.

Taking a seat in Defence Against the Dark Arts, she hoped she would find her Ravenclaw friend that she'd made, and listened as Professor Styx introduced what they'd be doing for that semester. It did sound interesting, but this wasn't Mhairi's favourite subject, and she hoped the futures lessons wouldn't include performing such things. She'd once witnessed her mum perform a jinx on her cousin a few years ago, and while she had found it funny at the time, she couldn't believe that it was a good thing to do, especially not to other children. Mhairi liked to be organised, and did her homework before the end of the lesson, and was able to hand it in to the Professor before she left. He was quite intimidating though, and she tried not to make any eye contact with as she did so, hurrying out in search of her friend.

Space girl | SCIENCE! | optimist | dreamer | question everything

Stella had disliked Defence Against the Dark Arts last year, and with less than her usual optimism, she didn't think it would get any better. She hated the dingy atmosphere of the classroom (what was the point? how were they supposed to write good notes in semi-darkness?), and hated Professor Styx's forbidding attitude, and the way he hardly bothered to explain the material he was supposed to be teaching. She'd had to do a lot of reading just to keep up last year, and even then she hadn't reached her preferred O grade. Now, for the first time in her life, she thought she wasn't even going to try.

As expected, this first lesson was no exception. Professor Styx left it to the students to explain the concepts he was supposedly teaching, and didn't even bother to say out loud whether they'd got it right. Nevertheless, Stella diligently copied down the definitions her classmates had given, and decided to look it up in her textbook once class was over. Stella had little interest in curses - that level of darkness was entirely outside of her experience, and she had no interest or expectation of it becoming otherwise. And jinxes . . . well, she supposed they were academically curious; as always she was immediately beginning to wonder how they worked, but she hadn't had that question answered in her other classes last year, let alone this one. And she would never think of attacking a fellow student, nor did she think any of them were likely to attack her. Stella left the classroom in a worse mood than she had entered it, and headed for the library.

Lessons, schmessons. Thought Oliver as he passed under the door to the Defense Againts the Dark Arts class and found himself a seat. He was just about the last to arrive, if not the last, and he tried to sit down as quietly as he could in the hopes that he wouldn't draw attention to himself.
Oliver repressed a groan as he looked around the classroom. It was so dull and lifeless. It was like Dracula himself had taken up residence. Then maybe he had, the boy thought as he glanced at their professor. The man reminded him a whole lot of one of those odd washed up rock stars that were pictured on his dad's old cassette tapes. One who'd been bitten by a bat at that.

Oliver blinked, trying to pay at least a little attention to what the Professor was droning on about. He'd introduced himself and then informed them that they'd be learning about jinxes and how to defend against them. That did sound rather fun to the Hufflepuff, so he decided to tune in more to what was being said. Oliver listened for the rest of the lesson, and then gathered up his things before leaving once class was dismissed. After sitting in the darkened room for so long, the youth was definitely heading out for some fresh air.
Homework Concerning Jinxes and Curses

Oliver Foy
Hufflepuff, Second Year.
Defense Against The Dark Arts: Lesson 1

{Three Examples of Jinxes}
1. Duckifors Jinx - Turns the targeted object into a duck.
Should be great for quacks.
2. Ebublio Jinx - Ensnares the victim within the confines of a bubble.

Possibly effective if your enemy stinks.
3. Drone Jinx - Produces undesirably loud, annoying noise.
Perfect for punishing your parents with.

{Three Examples of Curses}
1. Cruciatus Curse - One of the unforgivable curses, when cast successfully it causes the victim excruciating pain.
Probably 10x as bad as stepping on a lego. Ignore that, oops. You probably don't know what that is.
2. Sectumsempra - A curse capable on slashing deep, sword-like wounds within the victim.
That doesn't sound very fun.
3. Lycacomia Curse - Able to induce the victim with lycanthropy.
Doesn't sounds that bad to me, but it probably sucks.
