[justify]     Sloane was writing on the whiteboard in the back of the room as the students filed into the class. Exams were closing in and today would not be that much fun for them. Well, not compared to the last couple of weeks anyway. This was a complex topic to discuss and Sloane turned to the students. The notes vanished off of the board and the students seemed a little confused at how the room was arranged. The desks face the back board. She waited for them to sit down before speaking. "Morning, students. I'm glad that you all appeared to have a good time on the field trip last week. This week we're going to cover a topic that we were all benefiting from at the apartment; electricity."

     "Electricity is a very common part of muggle life. Most items that muggles use consume some type of electricity. Wizards aren't able to use it since it doesn't work properly in the presence of magic. Don't ask me why it doesn't cause even I don't know that answer." Sloane turned to the board and tapped it with her wand. The notes started to reappear in sections. "We're going to have a very brief overview here in class today to cover the basics. Electricity is a complicated matter at hand. Electricity is the flow of electrical power or charge. It's generated from conversion of another source of energy. Some ways of getting this conversion are to burn coal or natural gas." More notes appeared on the board as Sloane continued to speak. "Nuclear reactions are another source of electricity along with water and batteries. Now, the basis of electricity lies in Electrons." An image of an atom appeared on the board;

     "This is an atom. Those little dots are electrons." Sloane pointed out the black dots on the image. "Everything in the world contains atoms. There are both electrons and protons within an atom. The electrons are negatively charged and the protons are positively charged. When there are more electrons than protons within the atom, the atom has a negative charge. Electrons are able to detach from their atoms within certain materials when they outnumber the protons. These particular electrons are able to conduct electricity."

     "Materials that are able to conduct electricity include metals, where those materials that are not able to conduct electricity include wood, glass, and rubber." She tapped the board again. "Muggles harness electricity and use it to power items within their homes. I'm sure some of you used the refrigerator or television last week. The picture and cooling ability are dependent on the use of electricity." Sloane paused for a moment, then she continued, "I'll admit that you can become very dependent on the use of electricity. One problem with moving back and forth from the magical world to the muggle world is that electricity doesn't work in the magical world. Electricity has, what I can only call, a bad reaction around the use of magic. As some of you may have noticed, I have been using my wand on the board today." She waved her wand a little for a slight demonstration. "In a muggle classroom, I would be using a computer and a program called powerpoint to project the images you see on the board right now. Computers don't work within the walls of the castle."

     Sloane sighed and knew that this was not the most exciting lesson for them. She wanted to make every lesson fun, but this was a class of learning, not a class for fun and games. So every fun lesson had to have an equal bad lesson. "Okay, that's it for today. I know that this isn't the most exciting thing to learn about, so I will just leave you with one last thought for the day." Sloane frowned, "Electricity can be deadly. When you're in the muggle world, avoid allowing electricity to pass through your body. Use caution. If you're unsure of how to work with an electrical item, ask someone how to use it. Electricity when used wrong has been known to cause death." She sighed softly, as she finished, "That's it, see you all later."

The semester was flying by, and Tristan still couldn't decide if taking Muggle Studies had been a good call or not. He really didn't think he would have any trouble on the exam, but was an easy O worth his annoyance? He took his seat with a sigh and looked at the front of the classroom. Though his interest was soon caught, electricity was something he didn't know too much about. He wondered how deeply they would go into it. Would she say how it actually worked or just explain the basics every muggle did know? This time he actually took notes, writing down that elecrticty was generated from another source of energy, and what the different examples she gave were. He tried his best to copy the drawing on the board though it wasn't really all that good, Tristan wasn't an artist. But he still wrote down everything he could about atoms, electrons and protons. it was interesting, actually interesting! Though it also made him realize the exam that was looming may not all be about what a pencil did or what a school locker was. He noted down which materials conduct elecricity and which don't, though he knew that a bit already. The mention of computers made him sigh, he missed those. He missed having one and he missed playing games on it. Even during the holidays, it just didn't feel the same. He nearly snorted when the professor told them this wasn't the most exciting thing to learn about, when it had been his favorite lesson of the subject by far. Her last warning didn't impress him as he had already known it, but he glanced around to see if anyone was looking shocked or alarmed. Then the lesson was over and he got up, leaving the classroom with the others.
