Astronomy Professor 1-4

Astronomy,1,5Today was the star gazing day she had promised her first years, and Michelle always lived up to her promises. She got herself ready for her lesson, she gulped down a double espresso - almost choking on it, she put on her dark blue jumper and stood at her desk waiting for the students to arrive, she had a set of telescopes placed by each desk, so people could just pick them up and go, eventually everyone had arrived and Michelle was extremely excited about this event. She sat there staring out the window, it was a nice night tonight, and twilight was nearly over so it would be perfect timing when they arrived. Michelle grinned at them when they did.

"Welcome guys!" she smiled. "Right today is your last proper lesson of astronomy of your first year so I thought I should treat you to a star gazing night, so everyone get into pairs please." she smiled "Ok now your ready lets go, grab a telescope as well" She smiled, as she lead them out of the classroom and up the across the bridge to the North Tower, she chuckled to herself hearing all the whispering and chatting from the students behind her, as they reached a ladder to the very top of the North Tower she turned around "I forgot to mention, if you are afraid of heights, don't fear there are charms and spells all around the North Tower so you don't fall off," she spoke, the comment she had just made probably adding more fear into their hearts.

There were seats along the rim of the tower and a lectern in the center where the professor could speak from "Hush now please." she smiled, when everybody was quiet she began to speak again. "Right tonight I want you to look for the location of the North Star and mark it down on your star maps and then look for anything that to you seems very cute or nice and jot down its features, and you can use your textbooks to find the name, if you need any help I am right here." she smiled. She walked down from the lectern and handed out some textbooks for the students to use as a reference "Oh and the North Star is astronomically known as 'Polaris' so note that down as well as it being in the constellation Ursa Minor, it may appear in your exams." She added.

Stella took a telescope eagerly and was one of the first to follow the professor out of the classroom. The previous Astronomy lesson had been appalling, but tonight they were finally going to do some stargazing, so surely it would be good. Stella had discovered during flying lessons that she was exhilarated rather than alarmed by heights, so she climbed the ladder with alacrity and stood as close to the edge as she could, gazing out over the castle.

Then Professor Castor had to start talking and spoil everything in the most baffling way possible. Stella could not let this lie, not with setting the class onto an impossible task. She raised her hand, and when she spoke it was with immense controlled frustration, loudly so that the whole class could hear. "You can't see the North Star from the Southern Hemisphere. The closest constellation to the South Pole is Octans, so we could look for that, but we're not ever going to see Polaris in New Zealand."

Having pointed out this essential error, Stella got on with the rest of their task. Naturally, she could mark several constellations off the top of her head, ones that actually were visible from New Zealand. Stella quickly found Orion, one that she was fond of, though he appeared upside down in the southern sky, and marked in the three stars of his belt and the single star Sirius nearby. She found the Southern Cross and the Pointers. Stella then got distracted into just exploring the beauty of the night sky, the myriad stars she could see twinkling, the rich dusty trail of the Milky Way. She found a planet - probably Venus at this time of night - and followed it for a time across the sky. The lesson was over too soon, and Stella left the tower with a feeling of regret.
