Professor Kalif Styx
Member Avatar
Patriarch of the Zhefarovich Family, Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor, Slytherin Head of House, Former Death Eater, Legilimens, Occlumens

Today, Professor Styx was in a sour mood, which was not what one would want to see from the Slytherin Head of House. He sat behind his desk, and he had the doors shut, but once he saw it was time for allow the third years in, he waved his hand and the doors opened. They came in and sat down. He waited a moment before he took role in his mind. After everything was silent in the room, Professor Styx started off the class with a rather interesting lesson for them, "We will be learning about Boggarts today. Now, who can tell the class what a boggart is?" Professor Styx gestured to a student that got the question correct. At least someone did do their homework and study on what they were. That made Professor Styx's sour mood lessen just a fraction.

"With most magical beasts or with any defensive incantation I have taught you a specific wand movement and the appropriate incantation. For a boggart you need more than that, you need to be able to push through your fear. The spell required does not actually repel the boggart it merely makes it change its shape to something comical. That something comical comes from the mind of the castor. Sheer concentration is needed for this. Now can anyone tell me a way of confusing a boggart?" More hands flew into the air, and Professor Styx motioned to one to answer. Once more another someone had studied. That was still not enough to bring the former Death Eater from his sour mood. It was enough to make him think that the third years were not completely hopeless.

"The incantation for this is 'Riddikulus' and the wand movement is a simple flick of the wrist. Boggarts can be found in most dark spaces, in cupboards, underbeds so be careful always and always be prepared." Unlike the previous years, Kalif had something else planned. He summoned a cupboard to the front of the class before ordering them to line up. "Inside this is a boggart. You will need to master that spell. Remember my instructions. And begin." Professor Styx opened it to set the beast free for the first student. After everyone got the hang of the spell, for the most part, he dismissed them with an essay and went to dispose of the boggart. At least it won't create more havoc in the school than necessary.

Assignment: Roleplay the lesson and do the homework.

Tristan was early for Defence Against the Dark Arts today, and he was wondering what they were going to do today. This year had been largely theory about creatures that were considered 'dark', and he expected today to be another lecture on something like the werewolf. Vampires perhaps? It was still odd to him that things like that were real here. Witches and wizards and magic he was getting used to, but Vampires? All he could do was hope he would never meet one.

But today's lesson wasn't about vampires, it was bout boggarts. Something he had read something about. So when Professor Styx asked who could tell the class what a boggart was, Tristan raised his hand. "A boggart is a shapeshifter that takes the form of the worst fear of whoever it sees." He said with a confident smile. He was glad to get it right.

He listened to the explanation of the spell they would have to use to face a boggart. It sounded ...silly, but interesting. He wondered how the magic worked. He noted down the incantation, thinking he would read up on the spell later. He was surprised when the professor summoned a cupboard in front of the class and told them to line up. Just his luck, he was near the front. He swallowed as he realized what was happening, he would have to try it now?! He didn't even know what his worst fear was.

Way too soon he was at the front and confonted with the boggart. It shifted in front of his eyes into a tall, imposing man in ministry robes. There was nothing scary about this, was the broken? Confused? But then his eye fell on what the man was holding. That was his wand. Numbly he listened as the figure in front of him told him he hadn't been good enough at magic to stay in the magical world, that his blood was too dirty and he was just a lowly muggle. Then the figure snapped his wand in two with an audible snap. Tristan winced and tightened his grip on his wand. Wait, his wand was in his hand. That realization made him remember what was happening and he flicked his wrist. "Riddikulus!" He said clearly, picturing what he wanted to happen in his mind. The wand that had been broken mended itself and started to fly around, casting jinxes at the man that made him yelp and cower. Tristan smirked, it was definitely not scary anymore. And no one could accuse him of being bad at magic. He moved to the side to let the next person try, eager to see how others would do. He hoped a few would fail, just so his own succes was more obvious.

Odette knew better than to chat with her friends as they entered the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom, as Professor Styx would surely punish them or at least glare at them until they felt like they would die from it. She took her seat quietly and waited for the lesson to begin. They were going to learn about Boggarts today, which didn't excite her too much. She had heard of them, but she didn't really think they were all that scary. Who wouldn't be able to see the difference? That was just silly. Anyone with sense would remember it was fake, no matter how realistic it was.

Some Hufflepuff show-off answered the question and Odette rolled her eyes. She wasn't going to be raising her hand to show off this lesson. It didn't help anyway, Styx wouldn't remember or like her better for it. It was a waste of time. She no longer cared enough about what professors thought of her, she had a bad reputation anyway and that wasn't going to change. She paid attention to the spell and wand movement, expecting to have to use it on the exam. She blinked in surprise at the sudden appearance of a cupboard. What? She looked around in slight alarm as people lined up. Professor Styx really was cruel if he thought it was a good idea to make kids show their worst fears to their classmates. She really had no idea what the boggart would turn into once she came face to face with it. But when it was her turn she tilted her chin up confidently to face her fear, expecting perhaps a big spider. What she hadn't expected was the boggart to turn into her mother.

Odette blinked up at the woman, startled and embarrassed. Surely this was some sort of mistake, she wasn't scared of her mother. The boggart was wrong. But then it started speaking, and it was humiliating. It said to Odette everything she thought her mother was keeping to herself, how disappointed she was with her and how much she hated being stuck with her, how it was no wonder that her father had abandoned her. Odette couldn't take it anymore, she was about to start crying and a vital part of her knew that that could not happen under any circumstances in front of people she hated. She did the only other thing she could, she turned and ran out of the classroom before sobs could overtake her. She hated this stupid lesson and this stupid school, but she hated even more that she felt safer here than she did at home with her own mother.

Getting Her Bounce Back | Dog Person | Dreaming Heart | Gambol & Japes Assistant

Rory entered the Defence classroom with even less enthusiasm than she normally did. She'd felt kind of terrible ever since she'd woken up, but even though the other girls in her dorm were avoiding coming within three feet of her, Rory knew she couldn't be sick. She couldn't even remember the last time she'd been sick, actually. She was tough, indestructible! A stomach bug could never bring her down, it would just curl up and die on her, it would - make her feel like she needed to sit down again actually, Rory thought with a sort of weary confusion as she sank into a seat close to the doorway. Maybe she really was sick. However, now that she was in class, Rory thought it best to stay there if she possibly could. If she could at least last until the lesson was over, she'd go to the Hospital Wing afterwards - trying to pay attention to Professor Styx was paramount. Normally the knowledge that they'd actually get to fight a boggart would have excited her, but today it just made her feel a bit queasy. She wasn't even sure what it might turn into once she was faced with it, how was she supposed to laugh it off? Maybe she could throw up all over it, that seemed the more effective, and likely, outcome at this point.

Slow to get in line due to her unwillingness to move and aggravate her stomach, Rory ended up behind most of the other students. It was kind of interesting to watch them actually, seeing both what frightened them and what they chose to turn it into - but as soon as Odette Harper stepped in front of the cupboard, Rory found herself watching even more intently. At first she was confused, as the creature seemed to have transformed into just a normal woman... but as it began to speak, it was quite clear who the subject of Odette's worst fear was. The whole situation was like a train wreck, Rory just couldn't look away. Any minute she expected the other girl to smirk, raise her wand and banish the boggart back into the cupboard. Any minute now, Rory kept telling herself. She vaguely noted that her stomach was starting to feel worse, but this was no time to focus on her sickness. Eventually it was the part about Odette's father abandoning her that hit home too well, and Rory tried to make herself invisible as the other girl dashed past her and out of the classroom. Even before today, the particulars of Odette's family business was a subject that Rory knew far more about than she was supposed to, and a stab of residual guilt arose as she remembered the letter incident from last year. Although that could just be her stomach churning from the bug. She tried to last a little longer, but it soon become apparent that she would have to ask Professor Styx if she could go to the Hospital Wing right now, without facing the boggart. Thankfully she was allowed to do so, and Rory gratefully escaped the classroom - her queasiness was causing her to think and feel all sorts of strange things.

OOC: Professor approved.
