Astronomy,2,3Michelle prepared everything for her lesson today. She had planned to make their own star but after reading the recipe, it wasn't going to turn out too great for the school, or the Solar System for that matter. She stood up to stretch her back because it was aching due to marking a lot of homework. Michelle glanced at the classroom. Truthfully, she was excited and she was looking forward to today's lesson, it was certainly going to be a nice experience. She walked around the classroom to check everything if they are in place. She checked all her posters, they were posted neat and nice. She then placed some parchment for each person's desk. She never had even done that in her life. Oh well, a first time for everything, nonetheless. Her students arrived, she let them enter by waving her wand. She smiled and waited for them to settle down. "Hey folks, today, we are going to be looking at the birth of a star, how are stars made? Well that briefly goes over what we did the last lesson, then it's straight into days, so we know that a star's a huge glowing ball of hydrogen gas, lit up by nuclear reactions in its core. They are born in giant gas clouds called nebulae. The gas in a nebula is twenty-five thousand million million times thinner than air on Earth. Even so, it has enough weak gravity to make parts of the nebula shrink into tiny blobs. As these get smaller, they heat up. Eventually, they get so hot and dense that nuclear reactions start inside them and they turn into stars. The heat and light from light from newborn stars can make nebula's glow in different colors." She lectured. "Most newborn stars are born together in clusters. Over billions of year, the stars may drift apart and become solitary, like our Sun." "The heart of a star can reach 16 million degrees Celsius, a grain of sand this hot would kill someone 150 km away, just to put that into perspective." She smiled. "The gas in stars is in a special hot state called plasma, which is made of atoms stripped of electrons. Astronomers work out how big a star is from its brightness and from its temperature." She grinned. "Well what do ya know, look a the time, class dismissed." She smiled. She waited for all of her students to leave then she went back to her office. Kauri dragged himself up the stairs to Astronomy, unable to stop yawning. He wondered if he'd ever adjust to this class. It didn't feel likely. He was a little surprised to find parchment already settled on his desk as he took his seat, but he took his quill out, ready to try and take notes, and hopefully not fall asleep this week. His notes last week had been a smudgy mess, and he had wound up redoing them while reading the textbook the next day. This week would be better, he had to be sure. As the Professor spoke he took careful notes, opening his eyes up wide every time they started to drift closed. By the end of class, Kauri was impressed, his notes actually made some amount of sense. He was exhausted though, and dragged himself out of his seat, heading back to his room to sleep. Notes

Geo pushed herself into the Astronomy tower with about as much passion as a boiled potato. She took the class because she had to, but it was difficult not to fall asleep when all they had to do was take notes. Taking a seat beside the window, she would often look out across to the grounds of the Quidditch Pitch. It was a similar view as they'd get from the IC room, and it was a better view than the blackboard. Even though Geo detested these lessons, she was determind not to fail them for a second time in a row. Taking her quill she scribbled down some basic notes as Professor Castor spoke, hoping that she'd be able to just read her way through her exams via her textbook. As she listened, Geo began to doodle in the corner of her parchment, small moons and stars that dotted the heading of her notes. Sure, stars were pretty, but they always seemed pointless. By the time anything spectacuar happened, it was so far away that in fact it was in the past. As the lesson dragged into a close, Geo was the first out the door, keen to head back out to the Quidditch Pitch for her flying practise. |

Perry wouldn't be the first to say astronomy wasn't his favourite subject by far. It was boring and pretty useless if you asked him. He still wasn't sure what they needed to do with the knowledge of stars and moons. They are just there and have no significant meaning for everyday life. It's not like your neighbour asks you which constellation can be seen tonight. Perry grinned and walked up to the astronomy tower and sat down. He listened to the Professor blabbing about stars and somehow his concentration was everywhere but at astronomy. The subject just couldn't keep his attention for long and his brain didn't need info about stars. He looked around and saw more people not doing astronomy at astronomy class. With his pen he doodled some awfully looking stars on his textbook. He wasn't an artist or drawer at all, but everything was better than astronomy class. When the professor spoke the magical words he didn't know how fast he could leave. He almost ran down the stairs towards his freedom. |
