Professor Styx looked as though he had not moved an inch from the last lesson, as he was leaning against his desk with his arms folded across his chest. The second years were soon to arrive and once everyone was seated, Professor Styx had a really good question for them all, but he doubted that one would not have the correct answer as much as an opinion. Once the doors were shut, and the class had settled down, Professor Styx got their attention with his difficult question, "Who can tell the class why we would study Prank-like Jinxes in this class, when they are not dark in nature?" The first student raised their hand, and once Professor Styx gestured for them to continue, they gave the class their opinion. Silent, he motioned to another student to hear their answer as well. "I would not say that you are correct, nor would I say that you got the answer wrong. However, why I am teaching you this is because as a second year, none of you would have any hope to survive against advanced Dark Magic, let alone cast it." Professor Styx wanted to get this through their heads before they would even try to go out and face someone in his allies and hope to survive. Most of them would not hurt a kid, but if Professor Styx was not a professor, and someone met him in a dark alley, that would be a different story. "You may pick up on curses and jinxes in your books that may seem funny and harmless, however when you use them on each other... That is where I come in. I will teach you how to recognize these jinxes and curses as well as reverse them when used on you." Now that the class seemed to know why Professor Styx was teaching them what they might find enjoyable, he continued on, "Most of these jinxes can be countered and or blocked by the spells that were taught the previous year. However, this year will be mostly theory." They would not be enjoying the lesson so much but he could care less. He was doing his job, and when the students were miserable but getting stronger in magic, he knew that he was doing his job right. "Today, we will begin the Knee-reversal jinx. You will be writing me an essay on this jinx, it can include, but is not limited to, the jinx's effect, use, reasons for use, reasons for creating such a spell." Professor Styx wondered how many different reasons why the jinx would have been created to begin with. "You have a basis to work on. This jinx is obviously used as a prank, but also is a rather cruel way to have someone stop walking to fail to walk decently." Professor Styx waved his hand at the door, and they opened slowly to allow the students to leave the classroom. "You have until next lesson to turn these in. Class is dismissed." Professor Styx did not wish to have any lingering students try out this jinx in his presence. Assignment: Roleplay the lesson and do the assignment.Defence Against the Dark Arts,2,2 |

Elly wasn't in the best of moods currently and that was because Ravenclaw had lost the match of Quidditch. She had tried her best to keep the quaffle out of her goals, but it was no use. Gryffindor caught the snitch and that fact annoyed Elizabeth a bit. Elizabeth almost forgot she had classes in between and hurried herself to defense against the dark arts. Her muscles still ached from the long match and she knew it would only get worse. Professor Styx was still his usual self, it looks like he hadn't moved it all. Which was odd didn't the guy need to eat or go to the toilet. When a question popped up she had an answer ready and her hand shot up in the air.''A prank-jinx used to hurt or harm others can be classified as dark'' Isn't it like ''The right thing used for a wrong reason kind of way?'' Elly asked back. Elly hoped the professor didn't think she was annoying, she actually liked this class. The fact that they didn't have to use this jinx on each other made Elly happy. She didn't like to harm or hurt others and you wouldn't know what could go wrong. It was odd that this was still classified as a jinx, it was pretty harmful so why wasn't it a hex. The question popped in Elly her mind and Elly kept pondering about it.Elizabeth found it strange that You could go straight down on your nose fracturing it in the proces. Elly noted down the homework and left soon after. She could only hope no one was influenced by this class.

April's entire life suddenly seemed centered around quidditch. Even though she was just an alternate on the Hufflepuff team, she really couldn't wait for the match. In her daydreams she had to play unexpectedly and saved the day, though that wasn't very likely as she knew. But school life aside from quidditch went on, and her second week of classes of the year was here to bore her. She headed into Defence Against the Dark arts with some other Hufflepuff students, smiling as she took her seat. Maybe it wouldn't be too bad. Perhaps it would be short and be over soon? Sitting still was always a struggle for April, but even more lately. Elizabeth from Ravenclaw answered the question, and April gave her a thumbs up before turning her attention to the front again. They were learning about jinxes, and she wondered how useful that was. Sure, they may be fun to use on someone, but that wasn't really what Professor Styx should be teaching them. Was it? The first jinx they would learn was the Knee-reversal jinx. It sounded odd, almost comical, and she was really curious what that would look like once it was cast on a person. The odds were that she would probably never see it, though, unless she ran into someone really mean that used it. She wondered if it hurt, and hoped not. It wouldn't be a good prank if it actually hurt someone seriously in her opinion. She gathered her things and shoved them into her bag carelessly, wondering when she would start on the homework. What she really wanted to do was get some extra quidditch practice in before the match, but maybe she could squeeze it in somewhere. She knew her father would want her to do well on all her homework. |

Sophie's eyebrows went up slightly as she headed into the classroom and saw that Professor Styx was in the exact same place as he was last week. She pictured for a moment how funny it would be if he just stayed here like that after the lights went out and waited for them to return. The idea made her smile a little as she took her seat next to Elizabeth. She sat with the other Ravenclaw out of habit, though she also had to admit to herself that she liked her. She took out a piece of parchment and a quill to take some notes. She wasn't surprised Elly managed to get the answer and it sounded correct to her, though Styx didn't say if it was right or not. It seemed odd to her for him to ask a question and then be vague about it, but she let it go. She took a few notes on why they had to learn prank-like jinxes, even if it felt silly to her. Basically it was to fill time until they were ready for the real thing. Great. Sophie sighed and flicked her hair back before taking more notes. She wrote down that most of the jinxes could be countered or blocked by spells that the already knew, which was nice to know. She didn't mind that the year would be mostly theory, though. The knee-reversal jinx seemed cruel, but also sort of funny. She understood why the professor said it wasn't just a prank as it could easily be used to prevent someone from running away and keep them somewhere, but she also couldn't help but think it would look hilarious when cast on someone she disliked. Maybe Gabriel Rosenberg, see how well he would fly with his knees backwards. Smothering a snort at the mental image, she jotted down the homework for next time. The essay didn't sound too difficult, but she wasn't sure where she could find all the information. Maybe it was just in her book, but she had the feeling she might have to go to the library. With a sigh, she put her things away and got ready to leave. She glanced at Professor Styx one last time to see if he'd move from his spot, but apparently not. |

Phoebe entered the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom with her friend Veronica, smiling eagerly. The first week of classes always was Phoebe's least favorite part of any semester. Which was why she was excited to get to the second week, the real meat of the theory they would learn during the semester. Professor Styx was an odd Professor in how different he was from the others, but Phoebe had never minded him. Even though she thought he could use some cheering up, for sure, he at least gave them clear and accurate information without too much chit-chat. She appreciated that in a teacher. She sat with Veronica as always and got ready to take some notes. When the professor asked a question, Phoebe's hand flew into the air as it always did. She couldn't hide her scowl when she wasn't picked, but Elly was instead. Elly was already outshining her in charms, did she have to take other subjects too? Her answer sounded pretty good as well, which didn't help her mood. She didn't mind that they were learning about prank-like jinxes as they weren't yet ready for real Dark Magic. After all, any knowledge was welcome to the Ravenclaw. Sure, she wished they could move onto the advanced things and learn something really brutal and cool, but there was no reason not to learn this too. She was happy to hear most of the jinxes could be countered easily, though the reckless part of her really wanted to get to try the spells and see what would happen. The knee-reversal jinx was fascinating. Did it hurt? Or did the jinx change the human body in such a way that it would feel natural? Would it be the way bird's legs looked? She wanted to see it, maybe she could persuade Veronica to use it on her later? She glanced at her friend, but it seemed unlikely to her. The lesson was over before she knew it, and she got up to gather her belongings. She was already looking forward to the next lesson, wondering what jinx they would be learning then. Hopefully it would be a combination of theory and practical, but she had the feeling it would be mostly theory. It wasn't like she really minded that, but she liked the combination better. |

Jackson filled into the Defence against the dark arts classroom behind a pair of his fellow Ravenclaw's and as usual took a seat towards the back of the classroom. He avoided making eye contact with Professor Styx as he took out his parchment and writing equipment. Jackson was glad that so far they hadn't been learning dark magic, it wasn't something he particularly wanted to learn, he was barely okay with prank jinxes. He didn't like the idea that people around him were learning something like that as there was always a chance it could be used on him. Jackson took notes on the rather unpleasant sounding jinx and dreaded actually learning to cast it. When the lesson was over he packed away his notes and his wand and made his way out of the classroom. |

There was tension between the two houses today after the recent Quidditch game, and Geo could feel it bouncing off her best friend. As she walked with Elizabeth into the DADA classroom, not even Professor Kalif's presence helped with the atmosphere. She gave a smile towards Sophie, and got out her text books and waited for the Professor. These classes were not so difficult in fact, and Geo just hoped that as time went on, she would neither harm another or be harmed. As Elly answered a question, she completely agreed. If an Auror were to jokingly make an arrest, it would cause just as much mental damage than a real one, at least until the reveal of such a plan. That being said, at least it meant they didn't need to take the jinxs too seriously, and it might even even be fun, for the bullies. The only reason Geo could justify they would learn about such things, would be to be able to defend them, so as far as she was concerned Geo would try just as hard with learning how to do the spell as she would to protect from it. Geo took as many notes as she could, including some additional opinionated points, while listening to the rest of the rooms discussions. By the end of the class, she tucked away her belongings into her shoulder bag, and made her way out the classroom, trailing slightly behind Elly. |

Veronica was never quite able to say that she was pleased to attend Defence lessons, no matter how much she enjoyed learning new things. Taking her usual seat next to Phoebe, Veronica concentrated on getting herself ready for class to begin rather than quietly chatting together as they did in other classes. She still hadn't quite gotten used to the intense way Professor Styx looked at them all as he taught, and so always tried to avoid eye contact whenever possible. The lesson started off with a question, but even though Veronica began formulating an answer in her own head, she didn't dare raise her hand to speak it aloud to the class. Instead she just contented herself with noting down the professor's answer, secretly glad that they wouldn't be covering anything of a truly Dark nature this year. Even if the professor thought such material was important to know, it always had the effect of making her slightly uncomfortable as she learnt about it. Prank-like jinxes weren't much better though, really. Veronica couldn't understand why anyone would find it funny to perform such awful spells on each other - the Knee-Reversal Jinx the professor mentioned they would have to write an essay on sounded terrible, and she hoped it was less painful to experience in practice than it sounded. Not that she was planning on trying it anytime soon. However, all Veronica really needed to worry about was writing an essay about the jinx; she was sure no one was actually mean enough to try and learn it to perform on someone else. She hoped they weren't anyway. Packing up her things at the end of the lesson, Veronica was glad to get out of the dark and serious classroom - the material always seemed more intense and real when she was in there.
