Professor Aeon Summers

Canine Animagus ☼ Spell Inventor Magical Menagerie Proprietor Transfiguration Professor 1-4 Brodie's Familiar

Upon entry to the classroom, many of the students may have noticed the presence of a somewhat colourful jar atop the professors desk, its contents seeming to move about in a rainbow mess. A handful tried to get a closer look, but were waved away by the professor and told to wait for the lesson to begin before they'd find out what was inside.

"Sit down everyone," said Professor Summers, grinning. "Today we are going to work on our first transfiguration spell of this year." He said, walking in front of the class. He could see excitement on students' faces at doing some practical work. He himself was excited, as he preferred spellcasting over writing constantly. As a student, using magic in class would always give him a rush, as if nothing could stop him now that he could turn turtles into tortoises.

"In the last lesson we learned about Animate to Inanimate Transfiguration, and that's what we are going to do today." He said and held up the colourful jar from the table.

"Beetles," He announced, raising the jar just above his chest so everyone could see the small insects scittering around inside. "We are going to transfigure them into coat buttons. Small objects especially insects are easiest to transfigure, because you don't have as much detail to worry about," He said, handing the jar to a girl in the front row. "Keep one beetle with you, and pass out the others among the rest."

The students took a long time to choose a beetle of their choice. There was quite the variety, colours, spots, sizes. Finally, after the last student had selected a beetle, Aeon continued the lesson. "Hold onto your beetles, don't let them escape; be gentle though, we don't want them dead. Please try not to kill them. Now, you will find that in transfiguration that it is easier to change items that are closer in size to each other. Matchsticks and needles are of the same size, shape, and weight. Essentially all you had to transfigure was the material and color. The same with beetles. They are small and similar in size to buttons, so all you need to do is to change the shape. Remember, that doesn't mean that it's easy. You still need the proper wand movement and concentration. Now," Professor Summers flourished his wand, "as I told you in the last lesson, Animate to Inanimate Transfiguration uses the 'three tap' method of wand waving. Make sure you use that or the spell will not work properly. Visualize the outcome."

"The incantation for this transfiguration is 'Praepilatus'. repeat it after me."
Aeon said, and waited until they were finished. "Now, first you must picture a button in your mind. I want all of you to picture a button with the same coloring as your beetle. That will make it a lot easier for you. As I said, we're mostly focusing on the shape. Once you're comfortable, you may attempt to alter other features. After that raise your wand, visualize the beetle turning into the button. When you are ready, tap the beetle three times with your wand, and swish the wand through the air, saying the incantation. Praepilatus!"

At his words, the chunky beetle on his desk flattened into a round, glittering button.

"Now perform the transfiguration on your beetle. I want to see buttons good enough to line my coat with." He beamed. "If you have any problems, feel free to ask. And don't worry - this won't hurt the beetles."

The classes seemed more advanced than they had last year. It was hard to keep up, but Perry was definitely trying his best. Today he had lesson two of transfiguration which was kind of interesting. When he heard that they were transforming beetles into buttons he felt kind of sorry for the poor beetles. He hoped they weren't hurt in the proces. He wouldn't want to be turned into something unnatural either. The Professor did say this wouldn't hurt the creatures, but he wasn't so sure. When they repeated the Professor he found it was hard to say the spell. Why couldn't the spells be easier words that were understandable.

He looked at the beetle and apologized, he really didn't want to hurt it. He tapped it three times with his wand. 'Praepilatus' he spoke clearly. The beetle had a green undertone in its body so Perry had envisioned a green button. Only thing that wasn't good with this button was that is was walking away. It still had beetle legs, dammit. He tried again two more times and each time he came a bit closer. At the end he was tired and didn't have the energy to try more times.

Kauri wasn't quite sure how he felt about Transfiguration after the essay last week. It felt very different transfiguring living things than it had inanimate objects. Even if they weren't humans, he was struggling to find the line, where transfiguring them somehow wasn't cruel because of that. His stomach was churning a little as he made his way into the classroom, nervous for the lesson to come. He took a seat further from the front than usual, no longer as eager about this class as he previously had been. He physically winced when the Professor explained that they were going right into transfiguring living bugs.

Kauri could see his hands shaking slightly as he took his beetle. It was black and shiny, and looked like it was perfectly happy beetling along in its beetle life. Who was he to take that away from it? What if it had a little beetle family? What if he was turning some beetle's beetle mum into a button, forever? And what if he made a mistake, and hurt the beetle? He felt genuinely sick, cupping the beetle in his hands.

But the classwork was what it was. All around him his classmates were making attempts on their beetles, and Kauri didn't have much of a choice. His options were try, or... flunk, he supposed. And Kauri didn't want bad grades on his record. "I'm sorry..." He whispered to his beetle, before anxiously tapping it with his wand. "P-praepilatus..." He stammered, struggling to picture the button he wanted. The beetle wiggled, but there was no change. Great. Kauri felt a deep stab of guilt, wondering if that had hurt it. He had to try again though. He couldn't be the only person with no button at the end of class. "Praepilatus!" He tried again, and this time he saw the change, watched as the shape of the beetle's body morphed into a simple button. Kauri dropped it quickly in disgust, ashamed at what he had done. It looked like an alright button, still shiny and iridescent like the beetle had been, but the shell covering the beetles wings remained intact, covering one side of the button and rendering it... essentially useless. Too shaken to try again, Kauri handed in his half-button when class was over and hurried out, still feeling sick with himself.

Satchel Howard

The kindly snake-whisperer

Satchel's family had never cared much for academics, but having spent a year at Hogwarts, the young Gyrffindor found he liked the feeling of success. He liked doing well, and while at his age he hadn't decided what he wanted with his life, he wanted his options open. He didn't simply want to work for his family like the rest of them did. He'd discussed it with Plantain, his snake, and knew he needed to make sure now, more than ever that he wasn't drawn into the Howard way of life. He loved his family, he was loyal to his family, but his allegiances were not theirs. The events of the Summer didn't change that. Educating himself was a way to make sure he had other options. Satchel didn't love learning, but it was necessary.

He took careful notes as Professor Summers spoke, trying to keep the instructions clear in his head. Transfiguration wasn't exactly his strongest subject, and he didn't have potions this semester, so he wasn't having an easy time of it. Selecting a black beetle, he passed on the jar and pondered for a moment how best to perform the spell. He'd repeated the word alongside his classmates, but now he was taking the time to pick his button. Picturing a bright and shiny new button, he tapped the beetle three times; "Praepilatus!" Nothing. Trying again, the young Howard screwed up his eyes and this time said the word less enthusiastically, more carefully. "Praepilatus." Opening his eyes properly, he saw a bright shiny new button resting in his palm. Grinning to himself, he pocketed it before leaving.

Gabriella entered the room with a confident look. She felt she was doing a good job with the first week of homework. She hoped to keep up with all of it. When she found her spot in the middle of the classroom she looked around to the others. She followed this lesson with Gryffindor and that ment Marcos would be there too, she didn't saw him yet but liked the thought of seeing him again. She took her notes with her so she could write down the important stuff for her exams later. She had to turn a beetle into a button and that sounded difficult but the blonde hoped she wouldn't fail. She had to score better grades than her first year. She didn't want another lecture of her dad. When it was their turn to practice the blonde took a beetle on her desk and looked at it. She had to focus and close herself off from the others that were making a lot of noice. Gabriella took her wand inside of her hand and pointed at the beetle. '' Praepilatus '' the blonde said and waited for anything to happen. The beetle changed a bit but not as it should be. It was part beetle, and part button and it looked strange. She focused again and sighted, the next time it worked and the blonde was glad. She left the room as the lesson ended.
