Professor Styx stood in front of the darkened classroom, the way that he preferred it. This year, the curriculum was not at all going to be enjoyable for the Fifth years. The previous year had been rather enjoyable for them, and so will the next ones onward if they passed his OWL. Professor Styx looked at the time table and could see that the fifth years would be here at any moment. The doors opened, allowing light into the classroom for a sheer moment, to allow his students to enter. The Defence Against the Dark Arts professor was one to not tolerate much from students. To his amazement, his Slytherins had not been acting that bad this year, luckily for them. Once everyone was in, the doors shut with a snap, and then the professor looked over his pupils before he started up the class without so much of a greeting, which they should be used to if they have been taught for too long by the Slytherin Head of House. "You all know how important this year is, so I will not go on about it either. You know what this course is about, and first and foremost, you will be learning about Curses this year. This will be needed if you want to proceed into the NEWT level of my class." With a snap of his gloved hands, a piece of chalk wrote on the chalkboard 'Discussing Curses thoroughly'. This would be the start, and to let them know how this class will have minimal wand usage. Not unless Professor Styx changed his mind, but that was very rare for the man to have his mind changed without just reasons. The chalk did not stop there, as it went down below the first three words and wrote out, 'Babbling Curse'. With another snap of his fingers, the chalk fell back to the tray lifeless. "I expect most of you to know about this curse, perhaps even know how to conjure it." The name of the Curse itself spoke for itself. "The curse causes the victim to babble incoherently until the curse wears off or is lifted. Finite will stop this curse, however having yourself say the spell while you are under the curse is the issue. If you are babbling on, you won't be able to use Finite to save yourself. Next year, if you pass the OWL exam for this class, you will be trained to be able to lift the curse by using non-verbal spells. Otherwise, you will have to wait until someone grants you mercy and lifts the curse from you." Professor Styx looked at the time table, and he looked at the students once more. They seemed to be grasping the lesson well, and he would not have them practice the spell in here. It would give everyone, including himself, a headache from all the babble. "Class dismissed, you have no homework tonight." It was unexpected, but Professor Styx was done with the lesson, there was nothing else to go on about. The doors opened to allow the students to leave as he sat down behind his desk. Assignment: Roleplay the lesson.Defence Against the Dark Arts,5,1 |

Abigail Carter knew that there was every chance that all of their professors would spend a bit of the first lesson telling them how important this year of schooling would be for them all. She knew, of course, that it was the second most important year of their schooling, next to NEWTs, and she didn't need to be reminded by all of her professors. With a sigh, she took a seat in the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom and listened as the professor began to explain what they would be learning this semester and was very thankful when he skipped over the reminder of how difficult things would be and how important it was that they did well. She didn't understand why they all felt the need to reiterate it. She listened as Professor Styx began to explain the Babbling Curse and grinned to herself as she imagined it being used on the professor, though she would never have the guts to do something like that. She would resort to maybe using it on Flavio one day. With a smile at the thought she left the classroom and headed off to the common room. |

The fact that it was OWL year was not lost on Octavian, but just in case he ever forgot, the Professors of Hogwarts New Zealand were not shy about reminding them. The Gryffindor made his way into the classroom and took his seat. He was in a good mood after what happened with him and Camelia in the common room. Things seemed to be going well and Octavian was glad that there seemed to be something developing between them, especially since they had to end up together anyway. Once Professor Styx closed the classroom door, Octavian took out a sheet of parchment and focused on what the man was saying about the babbling curse. He grinned as his mind wandered back to Camelia, of course he probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference if a babbling curse was put on her, she was already quite the chatterbox. Octavian took notes on the curse and when the lesson was over, put them away, grabbed his bag and made his way out of the classroom. |

Diane grumbled as she walked into the classroom for Defence against the dark arts. OWL year was already stressing her out and she knew once she starting working on her pieces for Hogwarts Monthly, it would only get worse. For now she was content to head into her first lesson and take some notes. She listened as Professor Styx talked to them about the babbling curse and took detailed notes while remembering what she already knew about the curse and adding in those bits too. When the lesson was over, she packed away her notes, though she wasn't all that impressed with them, and packed them into her bag and left the classroom. |

Eleanor had always enjoyed coming to school to see her friends again and she couldn't be more delighted about seeing them and telling them everything about her holidays. Better yet, the new fifth year had become a prefect, much to her surprise, which meant she was positive that the upcoming year was going to be great for her. The girl had never even thought of becoming a prefect before and she wondered exactly why her head of house would want to pick her. She wasn't anything special at all and the thought of such a question pondered her as she collected everything she needed for her first day of classes and headed straight to her first class. As Eleanor entered the Defence Against The Dark Arts Classroom she tentatively took her seat. After the syllabus last year, Ellie was unsure what was going to happen this year and hoped it wouldn't be too bad as she waited for the lesson to begin. The lesson started with the professor reminding them of their OWLs and Ellie rolled her eyes, not really caring much about stressing herself out about it. There was no point in stressing and Ellie could only do good with what she had. After all, there were plenty of other opportunities to do what she wanted if she didn't get the right grade. The babbling curse seemed extremely funny but the Hufflepuff would never be able to do something like that to anyone unless it was her sister. With a smirk, the Queen of Flowers left the classroom and made her way to the Great Hall for a well deserved snack. |
