Professor Styx was sitting back against his chair behind his desk. Today he was teaching the Third years, which were teenagers, the youngest teenagers. Professor Styx gazed up when he heard the third years enter the classroom, and he waved his hand at the door to close them with a loud click and told them to silence themselves in a harsh tone. He did not need for them to be chattering up the class. This was a serious subject, and it was going to remain that way. "You all should be familiar with my rules, as I have been here even before your first year. We will be going over what we will be learning this year." Professor Styx tapped the board with his wand and writing appeared on the board. Reading it aloud, "Magical beasts, including werewolves, vampires, grindylows and boggarts. We will be learning the best defences against each of these magical beasts." Some of the students seemed very excited over learning about these beasts. "Your OWLs are in two years, and you will be needing to know these beasts in great detail, as well as everything else we cover. That is why we do review your previous year's course work. There is a chapter dedicated to each of these There is a chapter dedicated to each of these subjects in your course book, each week prior to a particular lesson you will review it in great detail so that you are prepared for my class. I will expect notes to be taken of course. Now take down next weeks class work and this weeks homework." Professor Styx did not even see the chalk start writing the assignment on the blackboard. The assignment was to read up on the subject, and no essays. Professor Styx waited for the chalk to stop moving, and he stated, "Be ready next week. Class is dismissed." The doors opened to allow the students to leave. He did not think that they would be stupid enough to not read up on their own time. It was homework for them. And he would know who read and who did not. Assignment: Roleplay the lesson.Defence Against the Dark Arts,3,1 |

While Professor Styx's demeanour sent a bit of a chill down October's spine, the serious way he presented his subject made it one of her favourites. The material was interesting, and it was a relief to do something in such a focused way. She made her way into the classroom early and took a seat near the front, getting her things out to take notes, as a practical class for the first of the semester seemed unlikely. As Professor Styx began to talk she paid attention, taking careful notes. October didn't know quite how to feel about the subject matter this year. It sounded fascinating, but Care of Magical Creatures was the only subject she had decided not to take this semester. October had never been much of an animal lover, even though dad was, they just seemed... too unsanitary, and unpredictable. She hoped this class would be limited to theory, and wouldn't involve any practical introductions to any of these creatures. As the class finished October packed up her things, a little disappointed that there wasn't an essay, but she looked forward to digging back into her books, at least. |

Odette was already sick of her third year, and it had hardly even started. Not only did she have to deal with looking her half-brother in the eye at dinner if she accidentally happened to glance at the Hufflepuff table, but his sister (their sister?) had apparently decided she wanted to go to New Zealand too for some grand adventure or whatever so now she had to deal with her too. It was miserable. As she entered the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom, she looked at Professor Styx critically. Over the break she had considered talking to him once school started, but absolutely nothing about the man invited conversation about anything, let alone something so personal and sensitive. It seemed like they were going to cover magical beasts this year, which didn't exactly thrill her. At least it could be useful, she supposed. She took notes on the Professor's little lecture, especially what they could expect in their OWLs in the future. The lesson was short so she gathered her things and left without a glance back, making up her mind not to talk to Professor Styx about anything concerning her personal life because it would probably be no use. |

When Tristan was deciding his courses for his third year, there had been no doubt in his mind that he would keep Defence Against the Dark Arts. It wasn't his best subject, it wasn't even his favorite. But he knew from experience by now that knowing how to defend yourself was immensely important for someone like him. He had gotten into fights and duels about his blood status more than once already, and knew better than to drop a class that helped to protect him. So he was a little dismayed when he found out they were going to be studying magical beasts this year. It made sense that it was part of the curriculum, and it wasn't uninteresting, but it didn't feel as practical and immediate to him as for example the protego spell they had learned earlier. But hearing they would be coming back on the OWLs made him grab his quill and take a few small notes. He wanted nothing more than to do well on his OWLs and NEWTs when it was time for those, as he knew he would need good grades for a good job later. He was still clumsy with the use of a quill instead of a pen or pencil, but also determined to work through it and write like any other witch or wizard. He noted down the assignment for next week before gathering his things and heading out of the classroom. |

Corrine knew better than to be late for Professor Styx's class. She didn't think he was above saying something aloud in front of everyone, and the thought of that happening to her was enough motivation to show up with plenty of time to spare. Taking a seat near the middle of the classroom, the Gryffindor waited for the man to begin his lesson. She was glad she hadn't been speaking because it seemed even that bothered the man in spite of the lesson having not begun. It was a shame too because this was such an interesting subject, but the man managed to suck the fun out of it. Listening to what they'd be covering, Corrine felt that it would go nicely with Care of Magical Creatures. She was very excited for that class, but right now she knew she needed to focus on this. Copying down what the professor said, Corrine was happy that they weren't being kept for a long time. She packed her bags quickly, eager to get away from the man. |

Defence Against the Dark Arts. Always a fun and happy subject to take, thought Rory. Not. These lessons were always the worst because she wasn't allowed to even murmur to her friends, and she was always had to pretend to be writing down notes on her parchment as Professor Styx talked. Maybe he wasn't fooled by that, but it made Rory feel better at least - like she was blending in with the rest of class and had less of a chance of being singled out for a sacrificial death in front of everyone. Although the professor had never said a word to her personally, Rory was still wary of him and so tended to operate under the idea that it was better not to provoke him... a decision that had her groaning as she listened to the work that would be expected of them this year. At least they would get to read about cool stuff; that would soften the blow of all the homework a bit, in Rory's opinion. Packing up and leaving the classroom, she hoped she wouldn't procrastinate the reading long enough to forget about it. |

[justify]Syrus had arrived just as 'Professor Cold Face' shut door behind him and silenced everyone. Already familiar with his teaching methods, Syrus sat down and kept his mouth shut. Though, he's never really cared much for this class, this year he decided to pay some mind to his lessons. He'd hate to end up anything like his sister. Writing assignments to make up for lost credit. That would suck! And just because 'Professor Cold Face' sucked, extra writing assignments blows! Syrus would have to stick to his schedules. Syrus listen as the man lecture the class, introducing the kinda work they would be learning this year. Syrus faced lit up, balling his fists to contain his excitement. He loved all this kinda stuff, even before he knew of his magical capabilities. They were always the villains in many muggel stories, Syrus always saw them as misunderstood creatures. He often imagine their tragic beginnings, like batman, or most of the x-men, except they became evil instead. Or maybe not? Would they be learning the origins in this class?! He wonder in silence as he copied or attempted to scribble down notes. 'Professor Cold Face' ended his lecture and dismissed his class. Syrus did not hesitate to leave. He was the few first ones out. Austin didn't like Defence against the dark arts, Professor Styx made him uncomfortable, though he had enjoyed the previous year when they had a substitute who was a lot nicer than the regular one. The Hufflepuff made his way into the classroom followed closely by his sister and took a seat near the back, which was where he and Autumn separated as she opted to sit closer to her friend Rose. Austin listened and took notes as Professor Styx talked about magical beasts they would be studying over the semester. If Austin could get over his fear of the man, then perhaps he would find the semester interesting. At the end of the lesson, he packed away his notes and left the classroom. |

Autumn made her way into the classroom behind Austin for the first Defence against the dark arts lesson of the semester. After a semester with someone else, Autumn was glad to have Professor Styx back, she'd almost go as far to say she missed him, there was something about his teaching style that she admired. Once she parted from her brother and took the closest empty seat to Rose. After waving at her friend, she turned her attention to Professor Styx and listened to him as he talked them through magical creatures. She was looking forward to learning about werewolves especially, she wondered how the reality differed from the muggle lore she learned growing up. Once the lesson was over, she packed up her notes and left the classroom with Austin. |

Spencer avoided eye contact with Professor Styx as he made his way into the classroom for the first Defence against the dark arts lesson of the semester. It was a shame the man had returned following his semester away, Spencer had preferred the substitute Professor and had been hoping the man would be waiting when he arrived in the classroom, but it was Professor Styx. Once he took his seat, Spencer pulled out a sheet of parchment and began to take notes on the magical beasts that Professor Styx descried to them. Everything the man sounded interested, and Spencer was rather looking forward to reading up on them, just not the actual lessons themselves. Once the first lesson was over, Spencer packed away his notes and left the classroom. |
