Professor Aeon Summers

Canine Animagus ☼ Spell Inventor Magical Menagerie Proprietor Transfiguration Professor 1-4 Brodie's Familiar

Professor Summers waited for his third years to arrive whilst seated behind his desk at the head of the room, his cloak draped across the back of the chair. His sleeves were rolled up and he sat casually, looking forward to just getting the class over and done with - he still had the other years to get through. He preferred the older students he used to teach. It was easier to converse with them, and get a point across. Eleven to fourteen year olds weren't quite the same.

As the students filed in, the wizard picked up his wand from the desk and waved it toward the board behind him, the small chunk of white chalk at its base coming to life and writing across its surface.

Gamp's Laws of Elemental Transfiguration: Limitations

"Good morning, third years. For those of you who are new to the school, I am Professor Summers, your Transfiguration instructor until you enter fifth year. For the rest of you, welcome back. Today's lesson is unfortunately going to be a bit dull and wands won't be necessary. Just bear with it for today and try to take as many notes as you can." The wizard told them, not liking the fact they were doing theory any more than he did. "So, let's get started. Today we'll be looking at restrictions within Transfiguration. What can't we do? Well, there's five specific categories."

Summers got to his feet and walked around the classroom, wand still pointed at the board behind him. The chalk danced through the air, writing up another word. Death. "I'm sure by now you're all aware that, while magic makes it seem like we are capable of doing anything, we can't go so far as to bring back the dead. At least, as they used to be. It's possible to foresee death, but reversing it is entirely impossible as far as we know. A lot of you may have already learned this at a young age, when a beloved pet has died and your parents couldn't simply wave their wand and have it brought back to life. No magic, including that of Transfiguration, is capable of this." He stopped, glancing at the students faces to find some were dismayed, whereas others obviously knew this already. Some people had to learn this the hard way.

"Following that, we have Magical Injury. Unlike muggles, wizards have the ability to cure most illnesses or injuries through magic. There's Skele-Gro, which can regrow lost bones overnight, a feat that would be impossible without magic. Various potions are readily available to remove sickness in seconds. Cuts and bruises can be healed with simple spells. But, it's not always so easy. Curing Insanity is beyond our capabilities, for starters. There also exists magic, dark magic, that leaves a permanent scar on its victims. Limbs can be lost through the use of this magic and we are powerless to regrow or reattach them. This is the harsh reality of magic."

"This next one is a bit obvious." Aeon continued, wanting to move on from the last two, less friendly subjects. He couldn't have their thoughts lingering on it for too long, it'd put the class in a low mood. "Knowledge and skills can't be gained by magical means. You can't pluck information from nothing and place it into yourself. There's no way of simply being able to just know things. Otherwise, you wouldn't have to study." He informed them, leaning back against the edge of his desk as he spoke. It was a bizarre thing to think, but he had to mention it. "Next on our list may come as a bit of a surprise to some of you, but food in unable to be created. You can summon it if you know where it is, and are able to duplicate existing food, but creating it is impossible. Your meals every day don't simply appear out of thin air. It's all prepared by the house elves and summoned to your plates." Aeon nodded his head as some of the kids looked shocked. Apparently it was not common knowledge. "And lastly, we are unable to gain money or possessions which require money by magic. Gold is impossible to create. That would be too easy. You can't wave your wand and conjure a bag of galleons, as much as you'd all like to. If we could do that, we wouldn't need galleons in the first place. This isn't to say it's impossible to conjure something out of nothing, but the things you do conjure are never permanent. Sure, you may be powerful enough to keep something around for weeks or months, maybe even years, but not only would it take great skill, it would also eventually fade back into the nothingness it came from."

Summers took a breath, tired of talking. This was all boring stuff that anyone with common sense would know anyway. He wasn't sure why it was included in the curriculum. Then again, there were a handful of students who hadn't previously known things such as food weren't created magically. "So. Some of you might think, what can you do? With Transfiguration, we can change what we already have, living or not. As for the rest of its capabilities..that's simply something you'll need to find out as the course progresses, so stay tuned. Before I dismiss you all for the day, I have some homework. Nothing too hard, just your thoughts on Transfiguration and its limitations. Super simple stuff. Class dismissed."
Extra Credit Essay: Your theories on limitations of Transfiguration. Basically write your thoughts on some of the inner workings of Transfiguration, and why or why not there are limitations on certain things.

Transfiguration was by far Odette's worst subject, and she would have loved to drop it if not for the fact that for some reason her mother valued it as an important part of magic. So here she was, in third year Transfiguration, hoping against hope that the tutoring sessions from last year would make a difference. She had a scowl on her face as she took her seat, and was atually glad to hear it was a lecture today. At least during a lecture she couldn't fail miserably.

She took out her parchment and quill to take notes on Gamp's Laws, as boring as that sounded. She tried to pay attention tot he lecture and take as many notes as she could, writing down the different restrictions though not much else as she had a hard time focusing. She hoped she could copy someone else's notes later, or something, because she was fairly sure hers wouldn't be sufficient for getting a good grade on her exam. She was still happy to learn that there were so many restrictions on Transfiguration, it was always a little unnerving to her how much you could do with this type of magic.

When the lecture was finally over, Odette had to rub her eyes to feel awake. If third year was going to be like this, she wasn't sure how she was going to survive it. Tossing her hair back and shouldering her bag, she made her way out of the classroom.

Third year felt like freedom to Tristan. No longer was he one of the youngest students at the school or at risk for being mistaken for a first-year. Finally he had the choice to drop subjects he found useless and pick ones he thought could be interesting, and hopefully they would learn some very good spells this semester as well. Transfiguration had been a no-brainer, of course he wouldn't job one of the subjects where he learned actual spells he could use later. It was slightly less direct and easy to him than Charms, but it seemed more powerful to him as well, in a way.

He entered the classroom and was quick to take his old seat, taking some parchment and a quill out of his bag for notes. He had refused to move on from a ballpoint for most of last years, but if he wanted to fit into this world he couldn't be so obviously different. He started to take notes on Gamp's laws, noting them all down. The handwriting was sloppier than he liked and he grimaced at his notes slightly. Would have have to do them over later? That was such a waste of time.

The laws itself were kind of interesting, and he was glad to learn about them. Limits to magic still seemed odd to him, as someone who had grown up in a world where magic was seen as both imaginary and limitless. It made sense, though. However, he wasn't very happy about the rule about money. It would really have helped his parents out if he could transfigure something into gold and let them sell it. Apparently he couldn't, which was a shame.

At the end of the long lecture he was glad to be done, hoping that the next lesson would actually involve learning some magic. But even if it didn't, the theory was pretty interesting too.

Returning to classes was October's favourite aspect of returning to school. Finally, something to focus on again. She had buried herself in her new books desperately for most of the holiday, both wanting to be ahead of the curve when school started, and avoid the awful situation her family had been put in. Settling into a seat early, October got all her things ready, eager to just forget everything else that was going on and focus on learning something new and interesting.

This being a theory class was actually surprisingly relieving, nothing to do but learn and take notes. Just how October liked it. She had done a little reading about Gamp's Laws over the holidays, but it was valuable to have a Professor cover it in additional detail, and she wound up taking a lot of notes, parchment covered in scratchings of reminders and thoughts. The essay sounded like fun and October was already pondering it as she packed up her things, eager to get started as soon as possible.

Homework

((Wasn't totally sure what you meant by short introduction, sorry! I hope that's the kind of thing you meant!))

((Tbh neither did I. It's just kind of always been there, pretty much anything would suffice. I'm surprised every time people actually do these essays.))

Corrine was excited to be back at the castle but not especially excited to be returning to classes. At least, transfiguration was generally interesting, and she knew that it was needed for quite a few positions. Her parents were always speaking about when she grew up and urging her to think about it, but Corrine really had no clue what she wanted to do next month let alone five years from now. Right now, the most important decision she had to make was where to sit, and after looking around for a moment, she chose a seat in the second row.

As writing appeared on the board, Corrine let out a small sigh. Writing by the professor usually meant a lot of notes for the students. When the professor confirmed it, she let out a greater sigh. The professor didn't seem to be doing much to lift the mood as the next word found its way onto the board. Her eyes widened as she looked around. What he said wasn't surprising. She'd grown up in a magical home. She was more surprised they were speaking about death at all. As the lesson continued on, Corrine kept her head down and just took notes, her eyebrows raising at some of the things they discussed - insanity, missing limbs.

When the lesson finally came to a close, Corrine made sure she jotted down the homework. Whether she was actually going to do it or not was another story. Packing her bags, the Gryffindor headed out of the classroom.

Well, Rory certainly hadn't expected to find herself back in Transfiguration this year after all the trouble she'd had with it in past years. The way it had of frustrating her to no end had put it on the top of her list of subjects to strike out - except, it wasn't at the top, really. When her mother had put her foot down and said Rory could only drop two subjects, it had been Astronomy and History of Magic that received the immediate chop - her grades in Transfiguration were surprisingly okay, and the subject didn't, you know, bore her to death on a daily basis. So here she was. Listening to the professor describe his own upcoming lesson as dull. Rory dropped her head on her arms with a quiet groan. Failing at the practical, or being bored to death with a lecture; she couldn't decide which was worse. Her note-taking skills were horribly rusty, of course, and usually just horrible in general, so she wasn't too sure if she was getting down all the important stuff - zoning in and out of listening tended to have that effect. At least she managed to hear what the homework was, although just thinking about it made her want to put it off for as long as possible. Welcome back to school, Rory thought to herself grumpily as she left the classroom.

Questioning Everything | Honeydukes Assistant | fifth year

[justify]The ravenclaw teen had a few worries on his mind, on the one hand his job was a little hanging in the balance, since the ownership was changing and Jerara wasn’t sure if they would want to keep someone like him on. He was young and though he’d been there for two years, maybe they’d want to bring in other people. Jerara figured he could probably get a new job, but that had been perfect, paying well, giving him some extra freedom and giving him access to candy. But it wasn’t like he could worry too much about that. Jerara was a third year, and he had picked his electives. Or well, in Jerara’s case he had taken them all and by the end of the year would decide if he didn’t want to take some of them. The boy had been too curious about all the class to want to not do all of them, or to get a taste of all of them. He knew it would be a lot of work, so even thinking about his work was silly, he’d keep in touch, see what would happen, but he also did need to focus very heavily upon his studies. His studies were really important. With that thought on his mind, the boy looked at what class was on his tightly kept schedule and packed what he needed before leaving the class.

Jerara was loving the term so far, even though it had literally just begun. He had so much work, and so much of it was so exciting. The teen walked into the transfiguration and took a seat in the room. He was keen to learn about whatever they would be learning about during the semester. Transfiguration was an interesting class, he had enjoyed it so far in the last two years. He looked up at the professor as the man began the class. He didn't know what the laws were, vagueness from the stuff he had read about it, but he was definitely curious. He took out the parchment and the quill and began to note down what the man was saying about it. It was definitely interesting, restrictions within transfiguration was definitely going to be interesting. He liked that a lot. The teen was writing things down, he liked the limitations, the limitations made sense, it meant that magical people couldn't do whatever they wanted. Although the ravenclaw wondered if someone could break them, if he could he would definitely try. Jerara was curious about it, he nodded as the professor wrapped up the lesson, it was long and intriguing and the notes he had were definitely extensive. He headed out of the classroom and headed to the library.

farm girl | giggly | hard worker | fifth year

[justify]Hard work always paid off, and Signy was very happy with the work she had put in. She didn’t get the best grades but she was passing everything, and passing everything well. The teen was very happy with this, she knew that it would probably be better if she worked hard and got Os, but Signy was always satisfied with the grades that she got for the work that she put in. The hufflepuff was getting ready for the day, as usual getting her clothes on, and gathering up what books she would need for the day. Signy had thoroughly enjoyed working on the farm, where Andi she’d noted hadn’t as much. Signy hadn’t really known why this was. She couldn’t figure it out. Perhaps it was just that Andi got bored of the work, it would make sense as to why she was a gryffindor and Signy was a hufflepuff. The teen ran a hand through her hair and smiled to herself as she put the last few items she would need into her bag and left for the class. She was at the very least excited that being a third year meant she could spend all her classes with Andi.

Signy stepped into the transfiguration room and looked towards the professor at the front of the room as he began talking. She smiled at the professor as the man told them about about the laws of transfiguration. The hufflepuff knew of some of the limitations but it was something she hadn't spent too much time reading about. But she knew that there were some and some that related directly to the farm she lived on with her family. The teen had her notes in front of her and she began to write down the other things that the professor was saying about the limitations that were covered by the professor. It was an interesting lesson, the teen finished off writing down what the man was saying made her feel good. She took a note of the homework before leaving the room. She went to the library and smiled as she did the homework, using the books from the library.
