Professor Aeon Summers
Member Avatar
Canine Animagus ☼ Spell Inventor Magical Menagerie Proprietor Transfiguration Professor 1-4 Brodie's Familiar

Professor Summers greeted his students from behind his desk as they entered the classroom, gesturing for them to take their seats. "Good morning, and welcome back to Transfiguration. For those new students who have transferred over, or the old ones who are simply just forgetful, I'm Professor Aeon Summers. Now, let's get started. As I'm sure you all remember, first year was centered around Inanimate to Inanimate Transfiguration. We're completely done with that branch. This year we're moving on to something more complex; Animate to Inanimate. It's a lot more challenging than what we've done so far, but I'm confident that most of you won't have too much trouble." The wizard glanced around the classroom, happy that the majority of them had seemed somewhat capable from the previous year. They were a few who were rather disappointing, but he couldn't have a perfect class.

"If you all remember back to first year, we went over Transfiguration terms and their meanings in your first lesson. If you can't properly recall, Animate to Inanimate transfigures something living into something that is not. For example, a hamster into a rock, or a flamingo into a lawn flamingo. Of course, as much fun as trolling muggles by selling temporarily transfigured animals would be, the Ministry doesn't allow it. Rules are rules I guess. Anyway, as with Inanimate to Inanimate Transfiguration, you're still using the three-tap method, so nothing changes there."

He stopped to make sure everyone was following along, continuing when he was sure at least most eyes were on him. "A few people have some difficulty understanding how Animate to Inanimate transfiguration works. We don't take the life away from the animals, it's more like we suspend it. They still has some small degree of awareness and thought, but are incapable of movement, speech, seeing or hearing. If you were to turn a person into a couch, they essentially are a couch for that period of time. They're aware if you were to sit on them, yet aren't able to do anything but provide you with comfort."

Summers got to his feet and walked around to the front of his desk as he spoke, suddenly feeling uncomfortable to be sitting in his own seat. The reality of it was that anything had the potential of being something else. A book thrown into a fire may very well have once been a human, transfigured into an object as a punishment or prank. Which brought him to his next step of the lesson. "There was once a time where Transfiguration was used to punish dark wizards and other rule-breakers. Before Azkaban, wizarding authorities had few places to hold wizards and witches. As such, they resorted to changing them into a stationary figure. Their bodies were turned to stone and became their prisons." His face was far more serious as he spoke. There were depictions of this punishment in old books around the library, and it wasn't pleasant. "Wizardkind has always had questionable methods of punishment. This method has not been used in a long time, but it wasn't that long ago that we still had Dementors roaming Azkaban. Thankfully now we have a less cruel system in place. Which brings us to your homework." Summers waved his wand toward the board, the chalk quickly scrawling their task onto its surface before they were dismissed.

Transfiguration was, in Kauri's opinion, probably the most exciting subject at Hogwarts. It just felt... the most magical. It always gave him those same giddy thrills he had gotten when he visited Obsidian Harbour for the first time, saw real witches and wizards walking around for the first time. He was one of the first into the classroom for the first lesson of their second year, settling into his seat excited and ready to pay attention.

Moving on to a new, harder sounding form of Transfiguration was an exciting prospect, and Kauri took notes on everything the Professor was saying. His quill slowed though, as the subject took an unexpectedly dark tone, and Kauri's stomach dropped with horror. The very idea of transfiguring people as punishment sounded horrifically, unnaturally cruel, and he looked down at his quill with a sinking feeling. What if it had been a person once? What about the statues around the school? Suddenly, this new area of study wasn't nearly so exciting to him, and Kauri left the classroom once class was over with the same queasy feeling lingering in his stomach.

Transfiguration as punishment, in my opinion, is cruel, and inhumane. Those people could be given a chance to learn about why what they did was wrong and become better people, but transfiguring them takes away that chance. It's basically a death penalty. There's no possibility to rehabilitate and help someone who's been turned into a statue, and of course there's always the chance of someone being wrongfully punished. Taking away someone's ability to change is never the answer.

It was time for Transfiguration again. And it was a subject that the blonde thought of as interesting. She hoped it would be as interesting a last year, it wasn't the most easy subject but Gabriella liked a bit of a challenge. As she succeeded with a good grade it could give her confidence, she sometimes could really use it. And she wanted to make her parents proud, and that wasn't a easy task. As she entered the room she found her spot in the front and made herself ready to take some notes. She was curious if Marcos would also be here soon. She had met the boy at the Yule Ball last year and it was very out of the open, she didn't expect to have met him. He was kind and seemed to like her too. Gabriella wasn't really used of getting attention from boys. With Heather everything was easy and they could talk about a lot and mostly about others, since they loved to gossip. But Marcos seemed just like a nice boy, and she was curious how he thought about her. She didn't knew him that well, but wanted to get to know more about him. Such things as what he liked and if he was a hard worker in lessons. As she already thought this year was gonna be even harder, but the blonde was kind of ready for it. It was really cruel to hear what happend to people before there was azkaban. Turning people in stone was a cruel punishment and the blonde was glad that wasn't allowed anymore. Gabriella made sure she had everything written down what seemed important and left the room as the lesson was over.

Transfiguration was an odd subject for a muggle born. It was subject about things that shouldn't be real. You shouldn't be able to change a rat into a cup or change a needle into a bird. Those were stories from novels and fanfictions. Learning magic was awesome though, but transfiguration was just a bit too far from his reality. Perry smiled when he entered the classroom and seated himself next to another Gryffindor. It was going to be harder and Perry wasn't really up for it. He barely made himself go through the first year of horror. The way the professor spoke about punishment made Perry his hair stand up. It was horrible to see that people were treated that way years ago.

Perry his quill was scribbling furiously over the paper. If he was going to do something this year he needed to work for it. He left the classroom after he finished his homework.

I am against the idea of using it as a punishment. It it inhumane and cruel to such things. Also the people should suffer and have a lengthy punishment rather than be turned into something and 'getting away with it'. A statue can't think or act so the prisoner would be easily getting away with it. The chance of escaping a wizarding prison is slim, so lets just rot them there.

Chinese | Sophisticated | fourth year

[justify]Being back at school was a good thing for Lauv, now she had plenty to do and was no longer just sitting around waiting for something, really anything to happen. The girl had been pleased with her grades in the last semester, not perfect but near perfect. Certainly better than she had feared she might do in them given the few difficulties that she had had. Those were mostly language relating but she felt like it would be a huge part of it. It had to be a huge part of it. However, despite all of that, she was back at school, and this year far more confident in her abilities, abilities she knew she had. The chinese girl was slowly getting ready, her mind focusing quite heavily upon what she would need for the given classes, and also thinking about what she might be doing in this semester. It was hopefully a little more advanced and she was looking forward to that. Afterall the work in first year had been good, but she needed a little more for this year, more of the same would be dull. The young slytherin ran a hand through her now fully brushed hair, gathered what things she would need and then left the class.

The first week of classes was passing just as the ones in the last year had, very little work, but the slytherin had higher hopes for transfiguration. This would be very better, they would do some work in this class, she was sure of it. The slytherin walked into the transfiguration room and took a seat within it. She was very curious about what they would be covering and nodded as the professor got started. Punishments with transfiguration seemed a little barbaric but then the wizarding was always a little of that. The girl continued listening along, nodding and taking in the information the man was saying, making little notes about it. It was definitely interesting, definitely not for everyone but that didn't stop how interesting she found it really. Bao smiled to herself as the professor brought the class to a close and set them homework, to give their opinions on the matter he'd been talking about. She was curious, she hadn't thought that hard about her own opinion on the matter. Now was a good time to do some, she took a note of the homework and left the room.

[justify]Marcos was happy he’d managed to pull back a few of his grades from the last semester, it hadn’t been great, nothing like his sister and his brother, but he was pretty happy about it regardless. The young gryffindor had been rather happy to e back at school, there were so many things he was eager to do within the school. So many classes that he was ready for. He was eager to learn more, and was sure that when he was finally in potions this year, that they would do more than sit around. The chilean boy was putting his things together. Even though he’d only been back a few days, Marcos had not taken great care of his things and everything was already in such a mess. He sighed slightly as he shifted through his things to find what he would need for the day, the right books, his wand, the bits of parchment. When he was all ready, the boy told Gabriel he’d save him a seat in the class and then wandered off. He had planned to get a little breakfast before he headed to the class, which was exactly what he did.

Marcos liked casting magic and that was the only part of what he enjoyed about school so far. lectures were long and dull, but with transfiguration there was no telling what they would cover, so the boy didn't know if he liked it or not. Some days yes, and then other days nope. He was hopeful for what they would cover in this lecture. In this semester, surely it might be interesting. Marcos sat himself down in the room and looked to the front. It became very clear after the professor started that they would be sitting through a lecture, so the boy prepared himself for just that. he put his head into his hands and then looked up lazily at the man. He took small notes or well, attempted to take small notes but they didn't really work. He was very happy when the lesson was brought to a close. He did take a note of the homework but he wasn't sure how much work he would put into it. He didn't really have an opinion on what they were learning about it. He didn't realise that at this age he was really supposed to have opinions on such things. The boy just put his books back into his bag and left the room.
