Professor Styx entered the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom earlier than the students, and he leaned against the desk. His arms folded across his chest and he opened the doors to allow the second years to enter the darker classroom with the windows blocked by shades. Professor Styx did not think that they would enjoy this class any longer. However, he would ensure that they all would learn however. He made sure that everyone was present before he said in his cold, monotone voice, "I am Professor Styx in case some of you all transferred in, and the rest of the students should remember me from the previous year. To begin, this year you will be learning the effects of prank-like jinxes." His thin lips almost curled up into a sneer when he thought of that, as he personally did not enjoy the effects and childishness that sometimes resulted in jinxes. "And you will also learn how to defend against them though many will be similar to last year." After explaining the syllabus of this year to the students, Professor Styx continued to remain where he was, and he continued, "Can anyone tell me what a curse is?" A student raised their hand, and Professor Styx gestured his gloved hand toward the student to allow them to continue. Once they answered the question correctly, he continued to question the students, "Now who can explain what a jinx is and the difference between it and a curse, if one applies?" Another student raised their hand and Professor Styx motioned for them to answer, and they got the question right as well. Now everyone should know what a jinx and a curse is. The former Death Eater turned to the blackboard and the chalk wrote up their homework which was list three curses and three jinxes as well as their effects. After the chalk finished, it dropped to the holder, and Professor Styx turned his eyes to the class. "I want you to copy this down, and turn it in to me by your next lesson. You are dismissed." Professor Styx waved his hand at the doors and they parted open to allow the students to leave the classroom. Professor Styx watched them leave, and thought that they should be thankful that the assignment was all that they received. Luckily, he was in a good mood enough to not torture them - for now at least. Assignment: Roleplay the lesson, and do the homework assigned. You all should know the proper heading to use.Defence Against the Dark Arts,2,1 |

When April arrived for the first Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson of her second year, she saw that Professor Styx was already there. She gave him a smile, one she didn't expect him to return in a thousand years before she sat down in the same seat she had used last year. Defence Against the Dark Arts wasn't her favorite subject, and Professor Styx's gloomy atmosphere didn't really help in that regard. She twirled her quill around in her hand as she started to listen to his lecture of the day. Prank-like jinxes sounded sort of like fun! She smiled a little, wondering if she would learn about one that she could use on October. Her friend was soooo uptight sometimes, maybe a good laugh would help? The Professor asked what a curse was and April raised her hand because she knew the answer. "A curse is a spell that's used to hurt someone else, they can be very serious like the killing curse or the cruciatus curse." But with the second question she didn't raise her hand. She didn't really know the answer very well, a jinx could be as bad as a curse, couldn't it? It all depended on how you used it. She read the homework and groaned silently, though it really wasn't all that much work. Still, the Hufflepuff definitely preferred NO homework, but that wasn't likely in Defence Against the Dark Arts. The lesson was over and she got to her feet, heading out of the classroom with her friend Therese and chatting to her about the past holidays. |

It was time for Defence Against the Dark Arts again. A useful subject on paper, but they didn't get to the very serious stuff in first year and she highly doubted they would in her second year either. She always felt jealous of the fifth, sixth and seventh years who got to learn advanced magic. She wished she could skip a few years, but that wasn't possible. She took her seat near the front with her friend Veronica and took out what she would need to take notes. Prank-like jinxes sounded like they could be fun, but it also sounded like... Dark Arts Light, nothing too serious yet. She sighed and slumped a bit in her seat, when would they learn some real stuff? When the professor asked them what a curse was. Phoebe's hand shot into the air but she pouted as she wasn't picked. Then a second question was asked and her hand shot into the air again. "A jinx is a spell that can be used to cause harm to others, but unlike a curse the harm caused by the spell is often temporary, easily reversible and less serious than the harm a curse can do." She smiled proudly when the answer was right. She copied down the homework assignment and then put away her things. She left the classroom with Veronica, planning to research which spells they were going to learn this year and do the homework together. |

Sophie Wilson was getting used to being back in school. She didn't really mind it, but it was definitely a change from the holidays. Defence Against the Dark Arts wasn't her favorite subject, but it wasn't her least favorite either. At least she could relate to Professor Styx and his eternal grumpy expression, she often had the same sort of expression on her own face, though it was by far less intimidating from a small twelve year old girl. It was nice to have a class with Geo in it, though the Hufflepuffs were a bit loud, friendly and chatty for Sophie's taste in general. She knew that they would have the same classes with all houses next year when they were third years, and was happy to see Caro more often. Professor Styx told the class they were going to be learning about prank-like jinxes this school year. That sounded like a bunch of nonsense to Sophie, and insufferable people that thought they were funny (Gabriel Rosenberg came to mind) would probably start using these spells on people like Sophie to be funny. At least they would learn how to defend themselves from it, she supposed. She didn't bother raising her hand when the professor asked a question and then another, letting the eager students answer them. She rolled her eyes, Phoebe Holland was such a know-it-all. She copied down the homework assignment on a piece of parchment before putting away her things. She left the classroom trailing after Elly and Geo, wondering what they would learn during the next lesson and if it would be useful |

Defense against the dark arts was fun and Elly liked the subject. She entered the classroom and placed herself next to Sophie and Geo. A broad smile appearing on Elly her face, she was ready for an hour or two of spells and jinxes. Professor Styx was still the same scary man he was last year, he still looked like he was permanently angry at something. Elly only hoped she would never be the point to release he would release his anger on. Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw were a nice combi Geo was in Hufflepuff and she liked her alot. Gryffindor wasn't bad either that is were Leila and Jess were in. Elly shrugged and listened to the Professor. So prank jinxes were the subject of this year and that made Elly all excited. The possibilities that would open after learning such spells. Since Elizabeth was still a bit tired and more busy with Geo and Sophie she didn't even found time to raise her hand and answer the questions. The homework was easy to do and Elly already worked some jinxes out at the end of the class. When the class really ended she walked with Sophie and Geo to their next destination.

Defense Against the Dark Arts was a class that Elijah enjoyed and always would. The spells were interesting, the content was interesting, and the professor was terrifying enough to ensure that Elijah listened to every word that left his mouth. He wasn't expecting to learn anything from this lesson but at the same time he knew that there was a very good chance that he would still he distilling some important information on the class and it would sneak up on them for their exams and he would not have a very fun time if he didn't pay attention now. He copied down everything that the professor said as well as the answers that his peers provided and when the rest of the class was dismissed he followed them out. |

Professor Styx was weird and creepy and Jackson didn't like him very much, but the class he taught was interesting and he seemed to enjoy it despite the man who taught it. He made his way into the classroom and took his seat towards the back. Professor Styx asked the class the difference between Hexes and jinxes. Jackson disappeared in his chair as he avoided having to answer a question, luckily other students came in and answered them so Jackson straightened up in the most casual way possible. Jackson took notes on what Styx told them about jinxes and hexes. He dreaded having to practice them as he had a sneaky suspicion they would have to practice on each other. Putting that thought to one side, Jackson packed away his notes and once they were dismissed he made his way out of the classroom. |

The second year of school was beginning. Norton was so in awe of the fact he was back at school he didn’t even mind that he’d soon be up to his neck in work once more, he was back at HOGWARTS, he was back where everything made more sense to him. He had thoroughly enjoyed his break, having Min meet his family, his sister, his father, meeting all of her family, spending time together had been great and now he was back at school. He was back where he could wave his wand and do fancy things with it. At home or really anywhere but school, he could do no such things, which had been depressing to him, but at the very least now he was back and he could learn even more magic. He was looking forward to it. Not just because he would be doing more spells but because in general, being back at school was so exciting for him. He loved school. Okay, he didn’t love all the classes, but he was happy in general to be back at the classes, and excited to be getting started. He took the final few books that he would need and headed off to the class. He was excited to see Min, he was excited for everything this year would bring. Norton had not particularly enjoyed the last semester of Defense against the dark arts, it wasn't that he hated it, it was just that he didn't particularly like it either. He had to sit through more he thought before he could really say whether or not he liked it. The hufflepuff walked happily into the room and took a seat with Min. His gaze shifted about the people and the decor of the room until the professor got started. The question about the difference between jinxes and hexes perplexed the boy slightly. He wasn't the type to pre-prepare anything for the first week and so he hadn't picked up a book. He also hadn't given much thought about the difference between the two. Nortie began to make notes about what the man was saying, writing down the little information the man was giving them. It was going to be an odd, but perhaps better semester, they would be able to do spells, and learn hexes and jinxes, that would be the most fun they could have surely. The young hufflepuff hoped they'd learn a spell in this first class, but of course they wouldn't that was just an insane thing. The boy took a note of the homework before packing up and leaving the room. |

If there was one subject that Veronica didn't find herself very enthusiastic for, it was Defence Against the Dark Arts. There wasn't really one thing that discomfited her about the class in particular (because surely it was rude to be so nervous about a professor), but the general atmosphere of the classroom and subject material all culminated together to make her time in the class more apprehensive than enjoyable. Nevertheless, she was determined to do her best in each lesson, and so Veronica readied herself to take notes as soon as Professor Styx began the lesson. Hearing that they would be studying prank-type jinxes was a bit surprising, considering that she hadn't known that they could be considered as part of the Dark Arts, but in a way it was a bit of a relief. Jinxes were much less intense than some of the material they had covered last year, and for that Veronica was thankful - some of those lessons had left her feeling quite upset and uncomfortable at times, even as she had done her best to perform to the professor's expectations. She noted down each answer to the questions that were asked, smiling in particular at Phoebe's answer, and wrote down the homework too once it appeared. Even though it was for her least-liked subject, Veronica was glad to have something to focus on this week to get her back into the study routine.

Geo was delighted that Hufflepuff's were able to start with Defence Against the Dark Arts in the first semester, and while she had heard that many people weren't a fan of the Professor, Geo adored him. The way he could hold the authority over the class was amazing, and Geo had high respect for anyone that control potential chaos, and not to mention he had beautiful jaw bones. Taking her usual seat beside Sophie and Elizabeth, Geo rested her chin in one hand as she watched the Professor speaking, caught up in the sound of his voice. Not even Professor Haden captured the students attention in the way that this man did, and Geo would gladly do her best at the homework for his approval. They still had a little time before they'd be practising real hexes, and she was pleased they'd be first looking at pranks. Perhaps this term she'd be able to pull a few on her friends in Gryffindor since they wouldn't recieve the same lessons for a number of months. On leaving the class, she followed Elly and Sophie, hoping their next stop would be the library so should could get a handle on this homework. |
