Astronomy Professor 1-4
[ * * ]
Today was the star gazing day she had promised her first years, and Michelle always lived up to her promises. She got herself ready for her lesson, she gulped down a double espresso - almost choking on it, she put on her dark blue jumper and stood at her desk waiting for the students to arrive, she had a set of telescopes placed by each desk, so people could just pick them up and go, eventually everyone had arrived and Michelle was extremely excited about this event. She sat there staring out the window, it was a nice night tonight, and twilight was nearly over so it would be perfect timing when they arrived. Michelle grinned at them when they did.

"Welcome guys!" she smiled. "Right today is your last proper lesson of astronomy of your first year so I thought I should treat you to a star gazing night, so everyone get into pairs please." she smiled "Ok now your ready lets go, grab a telescope as well" She smiled, as she lead them out of the classroom and up the across the bridge to the North Tower, she chuckled to herself hearing all the whispering and chatting from the students behind her, as they reached a ladder to the very top of the North Tower she turned around "I forgot to mention, if you are afraid of heights, don't fear there are charms and spells all around the North Tower so you don't fall off," she spoke, the comment she had just made probably adding more fear into their hearts.

There were seats along the rim of the tower and a lectern in the center where the professor could speak from "Hush now please." she smiled, when everybody was quiet she began to speak again. "Right tonight I want you to look for the location of the North Star and mark it down on your star maps and then look for anything that to you seems very cute or nice and jot down its features, and you can use your textbooks to find the name, if you need any help I am right here." she smiled. She walked down from the lectern and handed out some textbooks for the students to use as a reference "Oh and the North Star is astronomically known as 'Polaris' so note that down as well as it being in the constellation Ursa Minor, it may appear in your exams." She added.

stop staring ... I had spattergroit, ok!

It was one of the last lessons in astronomy and Minerva knew she was going to miss this class terribly. The professor was wonderful but the subject matter was beyond fascinating to her. She hoped she got to keep this particular subject on right through her Hogwarts years, she knew what she wanted to do after she graduated, so taking on particular subjects didn't really matter. She was not going to be an auror or a curse breaker or any other dangerous occupation that was out there, she had plans - big plans and the sky was the limit.

She wore a warm jumper and a jacket because this time of year in New Zealand though her favourite was also a lot cooler. Minerva was excited about the star gazing and couldn't help but fidget a little, she didn't often express her emotions the way others did but when she was excited about a school subject or a particular topic, she was near bursting with enthusiasm. She couldn't help but grin like a lunatic at Norton every so often and when the professor asked them to get into pairs, there was no contest. She stood beside him and actually reached for his hand, locking her fingers in his before she realised that no one else was partnering up that way.

Minerva gingerly let his hand go and chuckled softly at him, whispering her apology for her eagerness as she picked up her telescope and passed him one as well. The class followed the professor across the bridge to the North Tower and Minerva remembered the time she had spent there with Elly discovering their love for muggle chocolate. Once up on the tower, Minerva glanced about at the different seats that were spread out and went to take up position as the professor spoke to them. She set up her telescope and unrolled her star map, holding it down at the corners with little stones that she had brought in her pockets just for that purpose. She passed Norton a few as well before glancing through her telescope to find Polaris.

It looked incredible and she inhaled softly at how magnificent the entire night sky looked. They had a perfect night for star gazing and Minerva couldn't help but glance over at Norton, smiling and looking back through her telescope again to see what else in the southern hemisphere she could find, she wasn't sure about finding anything cute or nice but really wanted to find something.

She began viewing the different star clusters then reading her star map before repeating the process again and again, until she was certain that she had located Apus. She flicked through her notebook quickly and ran her finger along the index to find what was written about it. She had presumed because it's name had derived from a Greek word that there would be some form of mythology attached to it but there wasn't. The Apus constellation represented it said the bird of paradise and had been created by a Dutch astronomer and mapper Petrus Plancius in the late 16th century after he had studied the observations of Dutch navigators.

Minerva was a little disappointed that there was no fantastical mythology behind it but not so much that it hindered her from continuing her work. She drew lines to map the stars in the Apus constellation, Alpha Apodis, Gamma Apodis, Delta, Kappa, Beta, Zeta, Eta, Epsilon and the other stars on her map that she could not make out in the actual sky. She smiled at her efforts and found herself stifling a yawn just as they were out of time and had to pack up to go again. She gathered her things and left with the class, leaving her telescope back in the classroom before making her way back to Hufflepuff house.
