Professor Styx was sitting behind his desk rather than leaning up against it. This was a whole new approach, and this lesson would be simple and quiet for him, which was grand because he had a migraine that no potion he brewed fast enough could cure it. The parchment that lined the desks were quizzes, with an anti-cheating charm cast upon them. Professor Styx watched as the students sat down at their seats and Professor Styx told them in a cold tone, "The quiz is resting on your desk, you will have all class to finish it. I expect silence. Once the quizzes are done, you are free to turn them in and leave the classroom." Professor Styx opened his book and he started to read as the kids finished their quizzes.

Elly walked in the classroom and muttered something under her breath. She had heard lesson five was a quiz. Luckily Minerva was here with her, she could always keep her calm. Elly looked at the quiz and although it wasn't all that hard it was just unfair. They had an exam at the end, no surprise quizzes in between. Elly grabbed her pen and started filling in the answers. In between Elly yawned some bit and wrote some more. The quiz wasn't the most exciting one around and Elly wasn't in the mind set for something like this. When she was done she left the quiz on the Professor his desk.

As she entered the Defence classroom, Veronica was curious to see that there was a sheet of parchment on each of the desks, and as she reached her usual spot she read over the heading quickly, seeing that it was a quiz. Her face paled slightly, she hadn't been prepared for a quiz. As Professor Styx told them to begin, Veronica scrabbled for her ink and quill, reading over each of the questions in more detail. There were things on here that they'd never even learned in class - and she hadn't done nearly as much extra reading for this subject as she clearly should have. Would there be surprising extra questions like this on the exam as well? Mentally adding more work to her already rather long study to-do-list, Veronica got started on as much of the quiz as she could, trying to make educated guesses about the rest - something that it absolutely pained her to do.

Minerva had been completely unsure about this particular class right from the very beginning, possibly because of the bad press that the professor who taught it had about the school but also because she did not like to think of anything related to the dark arts. Now however she believed this class was an absolute necessity, this was as a result of discovering Alistair spewed with slime because of a poltergeist but also because neither of them had any idea at the time exactly what sort of spell would have worked best. Hexes of course but the most she would have been able to do was levitate it or blind it with light or some other charm that would possibly have little to no effect.
No, she had decided that this class was necessary and learning all about defence against poltergeists, lethifolds and other creatures that went bump in the night was high on her list of things to accomplish. She entered the class, taking her seat beside Elly as she always did and smiled at her dear friend who had been muttering under her breath. Minerva didn't understand why something as inconsequential as a quiz would unbalance her even a little, Elly was one of the cleverest people she knew, something like this would be a breeze for her.
She took up the parchment after the professor had spoke and turned it over to read the questions on it. She reread them before dipping her quill into her ink pot and finally started to answer. Every so often she glanced at her watch, making sure that she didn't spend too much time on one question over another and that she had still enough time to go before the class finished.

Your Name: Minerva Khulik House and Year: Hufflepuff | First Year Defence Against the Dark Arts Quiz
1. What are the Dark Arts? The dark arts is a form of magic that is used to intend harm, to control maliciously or to inflict death upon a victim. It is a form of magic because it encompasses not only a variety of spells but also harmful potions, cursing of objects with intent to harm and breeding of creatures such as inferi and basilisks. Many wizards and witches believe that the dark arts corrupt those that practice them to the point that their appearance changes.
2. What does the Imperious curse do? The Imperious curse renders the victim completely under the control of the one that cast the incantation. It is believed that if a victim possesses great strength of mind then it is possible to resist the bondage of the spell. According to History of Magic, the curse was created to brainwash and to coerce people into slavery back in the middle ages. It was declared to be an Unforgiveable curse by the Ministry of Magic in 1717. The incantation itself is Imperio.
3. What is the incantation for the killing curse? The incantation for the killing curse is Avada Kedavra - the key pronounciation being; a-VAH-dah ke-DAH-vra. It's etymology is Aramaic and means 'let the thing be destroyed'.
4. How many 'Unforgiveable' curses are there? There are three unforgiveable curses, the Imperius curse, the killing curse and the cruciatus curse. These were all made unforgiveable back in 1717. By the end of the twentieth century any wizard or witch using one of these curses on another human was awarded a life sentence in Azkaban. The exceptions to this were if it could be proven that a castor was under the influence of the Imperius curse; Aurors during the first wizarding war were given permission to use them and Lord Voldemort legalized them during his reign of terror in the second wizarding war.
5. What are the consequences for using Dark Arts? (Legal, and otherwise.) The consequences for using the dark arts is corruption of the soul, appearance and personality. While the Unforgiveable curses are illegal themselves they are made legal during times of war for Aurors, as are other aspects of the dark arts. The legal impercussions of using dark arts is minimal, it is frowned upon but not illegal to practice the dark arts. It is the use of the three Unforgiveable curses upon another human being that holds the consequence of a life time servitude in Azkaban prison.
6. What was the real name of "'Lord' Voldemort"? Tom Marvolo Riddle
7. What is the incantation for the shielding spell? The incantation is Protego which derives from the latin word 'protego' meaning I cover or I protect.
8. What does 'Stupefy' do? Stupefy is the incantation for the stunning spell which renders a victim unconscious or stops moving objects. 9. What is the effect of the babbling curse? This is similar in effect to the tongue tying curse and renders its victims unable to speak coherently but rather speak in a rapid, continuous, foolish and incomprehensibly excited manner.
10. What does 'Finite' do? This incantation is a counter spell, as it works on a wide range of spells from simple to complex, the 'finite' spell is considered a general counter spell. The word derives from the latin word 'Finire' which means to end - this is exactly what a counter spell does, it terminates all spell effects.
11. Describe the effects of the Bat-Bogey Hex. This hex effectively turns a victim's bogeys into large black bats that crawl out of the target's nose and fly away. Allegedely invented by Mable Dwillingwort in 1152.
Bonus: What spell expels your opponents weapon from them? This spell is Expelliarmus, this is known as the disarming spell as it has the ability to release an opponents wand or weapon from their grasp. It's etymology derives from the Latin words ; Ex - meaning out; Pellere meaning to drive and Armus for arm.

April happily skipped into Defence Against the Dark Arts, wondering what they were going to do today. She greeted Minerva with a wave before finding her seat. It was always so dark in here, but she didn't mind. After all, Professor Styx could do what he wanted with his own classroom! She was surprised to find a quiz on her desk, but the professor soon told them about it. She sighed and picked up her quill, hoping she would do alright.

These last few weeks of classes were dragging by, and Sophie couldn't even try to look a little cheerful as she entered the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom. At least Professor Styx never pretended to be happy when he wasn't. There wasn't much Sophie disliked more than fake cheerfulness. She greeted Elly with a simmple nod and then took her seat. She sighed when she saw the quiz waiting for her. It didn't look incredibly hard, but it was annoying. With another sigh, she picked up her quill and started writing.

Phoebe was sad the lessons were nearly over. Sure, the holidays would be fun but she didn't learn nearly as much new information when she was at home with her sisters. Not to mention, she would miss her best friend Veronica. It was so nice to talk to someone as intelligent as she was, and she gave her friend a smile now as she took her seat in the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom. Today it seemed like they were going to do a quiz and Phoebe was determined to do well. She wanted to get a better score than everyone else in the class, though she wasn't even sure if it would be graded. Still, she would do her best.

Geo had been running late that morning. Dragging herself out of bed, her hair like that of a birds nest, she had raced down to the DADA classroom, clearly causing a little comotion as the lesson had already begun. Looking across to Elly, who was as usual tied to the hip of Minerva, Geo took her new but now usual seat beside Sophie who seemed to already be halfway through her quiz questions.
Saying nothing, she tried to ignore most of the people around her. She was meant to be here for her education anyway, so why should she allow a little friendship drama to stand in her way of success?
