Eduardo sat at his desk while his students filed in, few as they were. Seventh year classes were always a little more intimate than earlier years which was good but also had drawbacks too. To kick this lesson off he requested, "Please give me names of muggle astronomers you know." A few hands went up and the man pointed to one who said, "Galileo" and he smiled, nodding although it wasn't what he was looking for. Then the second student said, "Nicolaus Copernicus?" and Professor Orbon nodded once more. "Very good. We're actually going to be talking about him today," he said, awaiting them to get their quills and parchment out before he could continue. "Nicolaus Copernicus was born in 1473, raised in Poland. He is famous for his Copernican Theory, in which that the sun lies near the center of the universe, and the earth, which spun daily on its axis, revolved annually around the sun. This kind of theory is known as a 'sun centered' theory. He is famous also for writing a book on astronomy called 'De Hypthesibus Motuum Coelestium a se Censtitutis Commentariolus', more commonly known as Commentariolus." "Another person is Claudius Ptolemy," Eduardo added and smiled. "Claudius Ptolemy is probably the most famous astronomer and mathematician - despite the fact most of his theories were proved wrong and incorrect later on in the future." Admittedly it was a little funny but being a muggle was hard to get things right and then to have lived so long ago added to that. "At first, Ptolemy began to accept that the earth was at the center of the universe, but in later studying, he began to believe that the earth and planets moved in circles around larger objects. He created the term epicycle, which was used to describe the circular paths that objects in space moved around. Ptolemy was the first person on Earth to create the horoscopes." Professor Orbon grinned and said, "Not exactly astronomy but it was a good try." The man couldn't help but think of his friend and colleague when he spoke of horoscopes but he brushed past this and continued. "Our last person, today, is Edmund Halley: he was the first famous British astronomer and he was the first to calculate a comets orbit. He wrote a book called Astronomiae Cometicae Synopsis (Synopsis on Cometary Astronomy). Which was started in 1682 and published in 1705. In this he mathematically demonstrated that comets move in a elliptic orbits around the sun and how over time they would pass the same point. He had such an accurate prediction that when the comet- now named Halley's Comet- returned in 1758, it validated his theory." With that the Cuban man's lecture was over and all he had to do was wait for the students to finish writing their notes when he said so. "You're dismissed. Please study this. It will be in your exams." Of course Eduardo had yet to have prepared the exam for them but too much important information had been added for it to be skipped. It was safest to ensure they all had their work done anyway so he sat in his desk as they all scurried off, hopefully to study. EC to the first two to answer the question.Astronomy,7,3 |

Alana wasn't sure why she'd even chosen to come to class on this day, but here she was sitting at her usual desk in the Astronomy classroom. As Professor Orbon began his lesson, Alana was prepared to take notes. She didn't participate since she didn't really want to even be there. They began to hear about Copernicus. Alana jotted down some notes, knowing she was butchering the spelling of some of the things that the man was saying. As they moved on to Ptolemy, Alana sighed. Why did these astronomers have such difficult names? The lesson continued on with the Head Girl jotting down more notes about the astronomers that Professor Orbon was discussing. When the lesson finally ended, Alana packed her bags, ready to crawl into bed. |

Felix wasn't a big fan of Astronomy but there wasn't much left of it so he just needed to hang on for a pass. The Ravenclaw wasn't yet sure what he wanted to do when he left Hogwarts so he was taking on as much as possible to keep his options open. He made his way up to the classroom at the top of the tower. Once he took his seat he turned his attention to Professor Orbon who began the lesson. Before any kind of lecture the professor asked the class to name any muggle astronomers they knew. Felix reluctantly raised his hand, "Galileo," He mumbled. After he was done asking questions Professor Orbon moved on to his lecture about Copernicus. Felix took notes on the astronomer and the others that were mentioned and when the lesson was over he packed away those notes and made his way out of the classroom. |
