Professor Orbon felt poorly for his fifth years, with all these lectures he had to give them he felt sure they would think he was a dull man who enjoyed such tasks when that was far from the truth. Still these things were important so he pushed on. "Sit, sit," the man beckoned to his students as they entered. They had little time to waste. "Comets are among the most brilliant, and most rare objects in the night sky. These soaring beacons with their beautiful tails come from the outer realms of the Solar System. A comet is from the group of planetary bodies known as planetesimals. They are made out of dust, and ice. Kind of like a dirty snow ball. Comets come from two places: The Kuiper Belt, and the Oort Cloud, both of which are on the very edge of the solar system." Eduardo wasted no time on getting on top of this lesson, especially with so many other things preoccupying him elsewhere. "A comet will spend billions of years in the Kuiper Belt or Oort Cloud. Sometimes two comets will come very close to each other, or even crash into one another. When this happens the comets change directions. Sometimes their new path will bring them into the Inner Solar System. This is when a comet begins to shine. Up until now the comet has been among millions of others exactly the same, but as they approach the warmer Inner Solar System they begin to melt leaving behind magnificent tails." "Unfortunately Comets don't live very long once they enter the warmer part of the Solar System. Just like a snowman melts in the summer, comets melt in the Inner Solar System. Although it is the most glorious part of their lives, traveling through the Inner Solar System eventually kills them. After several thousand years they melt down to a little bit of ice, and dust, not nearly enough to leave a tail. Some even melt away completely." Eduardo almost felt bad for comets in that moment. Almost. "Many people think that a comets tail is always following behind it, but actually the coma, or tail can either be behind the comet or in front of it. Which way the tail is pointing depends on where the Sun is. That's right, the Sun's heat and radiation produce a wind called the Solar Wind, as a comet gets close to the Sun it begins to melt. The gas and dust that melt off are blown away from the Sun by the solar winds. So if a comet is traveling towards the Sun then the tail will follow behind, but if the comet is traveling away from the Sun the tail will be in front of the comet." "And it looks like we've run out of time! You can go, no homework today!" Eduardo knew he was a strict man as far as grading went but he was still happy to give them a break every once in a while.Astronomy,5,3 |

Tholomyes practically dragged himself up the many steps to the astronomy class, he didn't want to go to anything today, he had spent some time on the pitch despite the loss at quidditch Tholomyes had still wanted to practice, if they played better, that would be better wouldn't it? He felt so hopeless, this year wasn't going how he'd planned in the slightest, and this year was so important, it was so necessary for him to do well during this year. He sighed heavily as he walked into the classroom and took his usual seat for the lesson. Lazily pulling out the books that he would need for the lesson and running a hand through the mostly unruly dark brown hair that he had. This would be over soon, the professor would be brief he hoped. And certainly as the lesson began he couldn't help but hope that a lecture on comets would be as brief as many comets were to the human eye. The boy pulled his notes out as the man continued, and began to write down what he was saying, noting down how much time these comets spent in the two places the man had mentioned, how they could crash. It was interesting, but Tholomyes' mind could not stay focused on him, instead as he took the odd note, he began lightly sketching with the awkward quill next to his notes. Certainly more difficult than sketching with a pen, but the result usually better if he got it right. He continued to listen though, and every so often, when the man said something that seemed more important that Tholomyes would write down, it was at the very least easier for his mind to just settle and pay attention, even if it seemed like he wasn't. The lecture was brought to a close and Tholomyes was thankful for the lack of homework. He packed up his things and then left the room. |

Cairo knew he would enjoy his astronomy lessons no matter if he were sitting lectures or doing practical work. The subject itself was simply so interesting to him that he was eager to learn all he could, regardless of how it was taught. That was why the fifth year arrived early to the astronomy tower and also why he chose a seat at the front of the room. He unpacked his stationery and wrote a header on his page for the lesson, and underlining it before looking back up to listen as the professor explained theories about comets. Cairo had not seen a comet in his life, despite using the telescope in his room to watch the night sky for many years and he was intrigued to find out more about them; if not only for the sake of trying to see one himself. Cairo already knew that comets were made of ice however he had been yet to put two and two together to realize the trail behind a comet was its matter melting away as it drew closer to the sun. He noted that fact down, and then nodded at the extra information of the placement of the comet's tail depending on which direction it was moving from the sun. He was tempted to raise his hand and ask how an astronomer could tell what direction a comet was moving, although he waited to long and the class was then dismissed. Instead of lingering around to ask his question, Cairo chose not to mention it and then left the room, happy to not have any homework for the day. |

The North tower was one of Lyra's favorite places in the entire castle. She always enjoyed the Astronomy lessons, but she especially loved it when it was a practical lesson. The brunette arrived to the classroom late, and only barely arrived in time for the start of the lesson. It seemed that today's lesson would be a lecture on comets. The Gryffindor quickly pulled out her parchment and quill to take a few notes. OWLs would be here before she could imagine. She was determined to do well on her exams this year. Lyra had seen one comet before, but it had been many years ago before her father disappeared. Her parents had taken Lyra and Link to an old stone tower to watch it fly by. She still remembered the amazement she felt even though she had been so very young. The brunette hadn't realized that comets were made out of ice, and that it was their burning as they died that made them so brilliant. The Gryffindor was surprised to find that the time was already up. She gathered her things and left the room. |
