"Today we are going to start our first switching spell." Professor Summers started, a grin on his face as the students took their seats. He was super excited to be doing a practical lesson again this week, and hoped his students were just as excited. "Switching Spells are some of the most common types of transfiguration spells, and simultaneously some of the most complex to explain or understand. The initial concept seems simple enough; you take one item and simply switch it out for something else..." He shook his head, indicating that this was not the case. "But no. Once we dive deeper into the mystery of these spells, you will certainly find that they are awfully complex in their simplicity." Aeon took two perfectly new quills from his desk, one black and one white. He placed them both upon his desk, moving things around to make some space. He placed the white one on the left and the black one on the far right. For once the class fell silent, and most of them stared up at him somewhat eagerly. After a pause, his wand swished downward toward the desk, though it aimed more at the middle than at any one particular quill. Not a sound escaped his lips. Silently, slowly, both quills began to change. The black one brightened, turning the color of coffee with milk, to gray, and then finally to white. The white quill gained dark brown tips for but a moment until the new color seeped slowly toward the center, effectively making a black quill. The two quills had completely switched places. Professor Summers picked up the black one. The same black quill that had previously resided on the right side of his desk, now sat on the left. His small class still stared at him. He felt absolutely certain that at least a few of them were contemplating whether he had transfigured both quills to change to a different color, or if they had really switched. The difference between switches and transfiguration spells was most always subtle. "Fact One," He started. "You will find that in most cases that when you cast a switching spell, there is no incantation." He fell silent for a moment to let the implications of that statement sink in. "So when you cast a switching spell, you can no longer rely on correct wording. Your success will come solely from your ability to concentrate and focus not only on the objects being switched but also from your knowledge of the second object's whereabouts and location, which brings us to Fact Two." Professor Summers opened the first drawer of his desk, and placed the black quill into the drawer and left the white one sitting on his desk. "The two objects that I switched were close together and in plain sight; this does not always have to be the case. For a small example..." He swished his wand once more through the air impressively and the white quill turned back to black. From his drawer he removed the white one. "I think I shall have you all try a simple switching spell yourselves in the remainder of the class. We will start with an inanimate object like the quill and work our way up from there." He reached under his desk and pulled from it one pile of white quills, and another of black. "Okay guys! I want each of you to come up here and collect two quills each. Remember, visualization and wand movements only. By the end of class, I want to see each of your quills swapped colors. I will be watching for pranksters and cheaters. You have about 40 minutes, so get started!" Homework: Role-play attempting your very first switching spell. Keep in mind that you are attempting a type of magic that is far different than anything you've learned before. I imagine such an easy spell can be cast without too many problems, but the 'no incantation' thing might be a little strange if you've never tried it before. Transfiguration,4,3 |

Eleanor smiled as she walked into the transfiguration classroom and took a seat in the room. Fortunately, they were going to learn their first switching spell and the Hufflepuff was excited. She sat up straight in her seat as the professor spoke. When he placed two different coloured quills on his desk Ellie stared with anticipation, wondering what he was going to do. He didn't say a word as the quills on the desk slowly changed colours and Ellie didn't know if she'd ever be able to do something like that as it seemed very complex and the professor had obviously one that lots of times. When it was time to collect two quills each, Eleanor did so and walked back to her desk with one in each hand, placing them in front of her. As she took her wand out and pointed it at the quills she tried to visualise them changing colours like the professor's did as instructed but they weren't doing anything. She tried again with her eyes closed but it took more than a few tries for any sort of change to happen. The tip of the white quill had become slightly darker by the end of the lesson but there was no real change. Sighing, Eleanor put the quills back and left the classroom. |

Sianna was glad that the festivities of the previous week were finally over, the valentines day things plus the roses hadn’t been an enjoyable experience for her in the slightest, but it was over and she could begin to look forward. This wasn’t going to be the easiest thing for her to do, she wasn’t an expert at her own emotions but she could learn and she would manage within another year. The teen was keen for the year to be over, but she at least was able to keep her mind busy with all the work she had for the Accio, it was a lot and so she had to keep focused upon that. The teen was pretty content, a little frustrated but to her with a brother like she had it was rather normal. She was getting ready for the day, putting aside the work she’d been doing for the accio and began getting herself ready for the work day. She put her books into her bag and then began to get herself ready. She put on her uniform and began to brush her hair, she put her hair up and out of her way and making sure she had her wand before leaving the classroom. Sianna felt confident that in this lesson they would do far more than just test switching spell related sweets and this brought a great amount of joy to Sianna who was very eager to just get started on doing some switching spells for herself. She walked into the classroom and took a seat with the room. Her gaze shifted to the man at the front of the room as he began speaking, telling them exactly what she wanted to hear, they would be trying the switching spell themselves. She couldn't wait to. The teen wrote down what the man was saying, the myths of the spell before paying close attention to what they would be doing. It seemed a little frustrating to be having to only deal with simple small items but she knew it was the necessary start. The teen took the two quills she was supposed to, the ones that needed to be switched colours. She pointed her wand directly at them and visualised them in her head switching colour. She concentrated hard on it, but it took several minutes before there was any indication of colour change and further minutes for them to actually change. She gave a small sigh but was glad when she had finally managed it. Sianna spent the rest of the lesson working at the spell, looking to get quicker and better at it. |

The last week had been weirdly amazing, he couldn’t believe what had happened in it. He was trying to wrap his head around the fact that Elysia actually liked him, he wasn’t sure where they currently stood, but at the very least he knew that she liked him. It had been good for him, he was so pleased about this, it was such a good thing to him. The fact he had so much to do with classes was the last thing on the slytherin’s mind but at the very moment he had classes to worry about, he had no more duelling due to the fact he’d lost, but he was still feeling pretty happy with everything else. It was the only bad thing. The teen was getting ready for the day, with perhaps a little more enthusiasm than he would’ve had otherwise had for the classes that he had that day. The boy was gathering up the books that he had for the day, he grabbed his wand and then placed that in his bag as he moved around grabbing the other bits and pieces that he would need before putting on his uniform and heading out of the room. Zared walked into the class, feeling that unless there was more background theory to learn that they would be doing an actual spell in this class. He was pretty sure of it, and pretty eager. The last lesson had been interesting and it had given him another week to learn about this that and the other thing to do with switching spells, he just wanted to do the spells. There was little that he wanted to do more. The teen took his seat within the room and looked to the professor as he got started. Telling them what they would be doing in this class, and Zared was happy when it turned out they would in fact be doing a switching spell. He didn't much appreciate how the professor had told them, but at the very least they would be doing a bit of magic, and that was enough to keep Zared interested. The slytherin listened closely to the man's instructions before grabbing the quills and placing them in front of him. He concentrated hard on it, on switching the two. He pointed his wand at it and then imagined them switching, he did the wand movement and focused all of his concentration. It took a few times to get it write but eventually the boy got it, and within class time. He packed up his things and happily left the room. |

Lennon walked into class and took his seat, waiting expectantly for the professor to begin class. They had been studying switching spells so he wondered hopefully if today would finally get to learn how to cast one. He smiled happily when the professor announced that they would, and he could sense the excitement around the room. He watched as the professor demonstrated how to do a simple switching spell with two different colored quills. Lennon thought nothing of the professor not saying an incantation out loud because he figured the man was just used to performing magic nonverbally. But he was surprised to hear that this type of magic didn't require an incantation at all. Lennon quickly jotted down everything Professor Summers was saying in his notes so he wouldn't forget and he could study them later for their exams at the end of the year. He didn't know if the idea of performing non-verbal magic now was exciting or daunting. Still, he was ready to finally try his hand on the switching spell so he stood up and grabbed the two different colored quills and walked back to his desk. Lennon placed them across from each other just the way Professor Summers had. He held his wand in his hand and looked at both quills firmly, trying to think of them switching colors. At first he didn't know which one to focus his concentration on, and he kept imagining the two quills simply floating across each other in midair to land on opposite sides, but that's now how it worked. He wasn't used to trying to make magic happen with sheer concentration. He liked being able to say incantations because it sounded purposeful, and even when he eventually got the chance to do more non-verbal magic the idea was to think the incantation in your head. But this was different, now he had to simply concentrate on the two objects switching colors. It seemed a lot easier said than done, which he was disappointed to find out. Lennon shook his head and tried again, focusing on the color of the black quill draining while its color seeped into the white quill. It felt like it happened at a glacier's pace but eventually he saw the effect he wanted and by the end of the lesson the two quills he had started with were on opposite ends. Satisfied, he picked them up and handed them into the professor, hoping to be able to do it again in his room to practice. |
