Professor Aeon Summers
Member Avatar
Canine Animagus ☼ Spell Inventor Magical Menagerie Proprietor Transfiguration Professor 1-4 Brodie's Familiar

Professor Summers greeted his students from behind his desk as they entered the classroom, gesturing for them to take their seats. "Good morning, and welcome back to Transfiguration. For those new students who have transferred over, or the old ones who are simply just forgetful, I'm Professor Aeon Summers. Now, let's get started. As I'm sure you all remember, first year was centered around Inanimate to Inanimate Transfiguration. We're completely done with that branch. This year we're moving on to something more complex; Animate to Inanimate. It's a lot more challenging than what we've done so far, but I'm confident that most of you won't have too much trouble." The wizard glanced around the classroom, happy that the majority of them had seemed somewhat capable from the previous year. They were a few who were rather disappointing, but he couldn't have a perfect class.

"If you all remember back to first year, we went over Transfiguration terms and their meanings in your first lesson. If you can't properly recall, Animate to Inanimate transfigures something living into something that is not. For example, a hamster into a rock, or a flamingo into a lawn flamingo. Of course, as much fun as trolling muggles by selling temporarily transfigured animals would be, the Ministry doesn't allow it. Rules are rules I guess. Anyway, as with Inanimate to Inanimate Transfiguration, you're still using the three-tap method, so nothing changes there."

He stopped to make sure everyone was following along, continuing when he was sure at least most eyes were on him. "A few people have some difficulty understanding how Animate to Inanimate transfiguration works. We don't take the life away from the animals, it's more like we suspend it. They still has some small degree of awareness and thought, but are incapable of movement, speech, seeing or hearing. If you were to turn a person into a couch, they essentially are a couch for that period of time. They're aware if you were to sit on them, yet aren't able to do anything but provide you with comfort."

Summers got to his feet and walked around to the front of his desk as he spoke, suddenly feeling uncomfortable to be sitting in his own seat. The reality of it was that anything had the potential of being something else. A book thrown into a fire may very well have once been a human, transfigured into an object as a punishment or prank. Which brought him to his next step of the lesson. "There was once a time where Transfiguration was used to punish dark wizards and other rule-breakers. Before Azkaban, wizarding authorities had few places to hold wizards and witches. As such, they resorted to changing them into a stationary figure. Their bodies were turned to stone and became their prisons." His face was far more serious as he spoke. There were depictions of this punishment in old books around the library, and it wasn't pleasant. "Wizardkind has always had questionable methods of punishment. This method has not been used in a long time, but it wasn't that long ago that we still had Dementors roaming Azkaban. Thankfully now we have a less cruel system in place. Which brings us to your homework." Summers waved his wand toward the board, the chalk quickly scrawling their task onto its surface before they were dismissed.

Transfiguration was one of the more useful subjects, and Tristan was eager to learn more about the subject. He also noticed for the first time that Professor Summers had a rather nice smile. He shrugged and took a seat, not lingering on that thought. He took out his parchment and quill to take notes, ready to get started.

Animate to Inanimate sounded very interesting, and he was glad they were getting started with that. It was more challenging, but Tristan was ready for the challenge. He took notes on how Animate to Inanimate transfiguration worked, he hadn't really considered what it would do to the animals, but the professor's explanation made sense. He wondered how it would feel to be transfigured into something else, it would probably be horrible if you were indeed aware of everything. It was no wonder it was used as a punishment back in the day. He did wonder why they just turned the people to stone versions of themselves instead of some tool others could use, that would be way worse in his eyes. It was a long time ago, but he figured for the worst people it might still be a good punishment. He didn't want to voice that opinion though, so he figured he would write the essay from the other perspective. He left the classroom with Vivian, wondering when they were going to try spells.

Questioning Everything | Honeydukes Assistant | fifth year

[justify]Remaining at hogwarts over the holidays was something that Jerara was growing used to, for one thing he was rather happy to stay at the much cooler New Zealand than northern australia, where it would be too warm, stuffy and just horrible. Being alone had its faults but he liked the work he’d been doing and during that time he’d run into the girl whom he’d danced with at the yuleball, so it had been pretty good. He was happy with how it had gone. The young ravenclaw was eager to get started on another semester, he thoroughly enjoyed the lesson that he was doing, and he was reading much more than he should, the classes on curses and jinxes had certain peaked his interest, and he was reading all about that, but now that he was in second semester he had a whole different set of classes that he needed to be studying for, that he needed to be working on. He was getting ready for the day, placing the necessary books into his bag and getting everything he would need together. He put his wand in the bag and then after double checking he wasn’t missing anything he left the room.

Jerara had a fascination with all things magic casting, so charms and transfigurations were classes he liked, though wasn't always the best at. The young ravenclaw took a seat in the classroom and looked to the man at the front. He was hoping they would delve far more into transfiguration and was sure that second year would have far more things of interest when it came to that subject. However, today was more of a lecture than anything else, and though he didn't really mind this, he knew casting magic and learning a new spell would be fun too. Jerara listened along, noting down how the transfiguration types were as the man described it. Certainly Jerara was surprised that transfiguration had once been used as punishment, he couldn't help but wonder what that would feel like to cast such magic, to punish one like that with ones magic. He couldn't help but imagine what it would feel like to be subjected to it. Though he could admit it was probably right that it was no longer used he still felt like perhaps it might useful on occasions. Jerara took a note of the homework and seat off to do it. This was an interesting homework assignment.

farm girl | giggly | hard worker | fifth year

[justify]The young hufflepuff was feeling pretty happy about herself, being at home certainly had its advantages, she loved spending time with her father, she loved spending time on the farm, it was just the perfect holiday, in Signy's mind there was nothing that could beat it. Nothing that could be better. The hufflepuff was pretty to be back for another semester, not only did it mean she could spend more time with Xavier and Andi, but she could spend her time having fun at school, at working hard, at reading when she could. The girl was eager to have many adventures, she was eager to get started, to work at whatever was necessary for her to do so. Her grades had been rather good in the last semester, not amazing, but good, she had been very proud of them, and she knew she was working as hard as she could to achieve that. She would manage that here too, in this second semester. She was ready to. The girl had finished putting her books into her bag, she was making sure she had everything that she might need for the day and then after putting on her uniform, left the dorm room and headed straight for the class.

Signy loved magic, and she loved working hard, so she was enthusiastic about the beginning of a new semester, she arrived at the transfiguration classroom eager and ready to get started. She took out her notes and was looking to the professor as he began his lesson. She had to restrain herself from giggling happily at the prospect of the work they were going to be doing. She listened as the man began telling them what they would be doing that semester in this class. She was certainly interested in it, and really hadn't even considered that some of it might not be allowed by the ministry. The fact they could just suspend life in an animate object was a thrilling idea, and she was keen to work in these lessons to be able to achieve it. She smiled happily as the man continued in telling them that it had once been a method used by the ministry as punishment, and she was somewhat curious about to what end. If it just suspended life then it was pretty pointless thing, the person didn't give back to the community or really get the time to reflect. She didn't think it morally wrong, more it was a questionable method in helping people do better. She decided to save it all for the homework that was about this very issue, and just packed up her things and left.
