Professor Kalif Styx

Professor Styx looked as though he had not moved an inch from the last lesson, as he was leaning against his desk with his arms folded across his chest. The second years were soon to arrive and once everyone was seated, Professor Styx had a really good question for them all, but he doubted that one would not have the correct answer as much as an opinion. Once the doors were shut, and the class had settled down, Professor Styx got their attention with his difficult question, "Who can tell the class why we would study Prank-like Jinxes in this class, when they are not dark in nature?" The first student raised their hand, and once Professor Styx gestured for them to continue, they gave the class their opinion. Silent, he motioned to another student to hear their answer as well. "I would not say that you are correct, nor would I say that you got the answer wrong. However, why I am teaching you this is because as a second year, none of you would have any hope to survive against advanced Dark Magic, let alone cast it."

Professor Styx wanted to get this through their heads before they would even try to go out and face someone in his allies and hope to survive. Most of them would not hurt a kid, but if Professor Styx was not a professor, and someone met him in a dark alley, that would be a different story. "You may pick up on curses and jinxes in your books that may seem funny and harmless, however when you use them on each other... That is where I come in. I will teach you how to recognize these jinxes and curses as well as reverse them when used on you." Now that the class seemed to know why Professor Styx was teaching them what they might find enjoyable, he continued on, "Most of these jinxes can be countered and or blocked by the spells that were taught the previous year. However, this year will be mostly theory." They would not be enjoying the lesson so much but he could care less. He was doing his job, and when the students were miserable but getting stronger in magic, he knew that he was doing his job right.

"Today, we will begin the Knee-reversal jinx. You will be writing me an essay on this jinx, it can include, but is not limited to, the jinx's effect, use, reasons for use, reasons for creating such a spell." Professor Styx wondered how many different reasons why the jinx would have been created to begin with. "You have a basis to work on. This jinx is obviously used as a prank, but also is a rather cruel way to have someone stop walking to fail to walk decently." Professor Styx waved his hand at the door, and they opened slowly to allow the students to leave the classroom. "You have until next lesson to turn these in. Class is dismissed." Professor Styx did not wish to have any lingering students try out this jinx in his presence.

Assignment: Roleplay the lesson and do the assignment.

Having a class from her Head of House was always a little more stressful than a regular lesson, if she messed up here he would surely remember it. She didn't have many hopes of becoming a prefect after her first year, but maybe if she worked hard enough she could make up for it. Not that she really wanted to be one, but her mother would approve of it, unlike her position on the Quidditch Team.

She took her seat in the middle of the classroom and took out her parchment and quill. When the professor asked a question, she raised her hand. "Because they are similar to the Dark Arts and can be used for dark reasons if the caster wants to?" She asked, hoping it was okay. She didn't really get a definite yes or no, which was a shame. The reason he gave sounded a bit silly, they could still learn theory about Dark Arts even if they couldn't learn spells yet, right?

The knee-reversal jinx sounded awful, and Odette imagined using it on all the people she didn't like. She was wondering if she could include that in her essay somehow, but she figured that wasn't very smart.

Rose wasn't scared of Professor Styx like some people in her year, but she did always feel sort of subdued in his classroom. She wondered if it was because of how dark it was there or because of Professor Styx' chilling expression. She took her seat and sighed, this was going to be a long hour. She didn't perk up until the professor mentioned Prank-like jinxes. She beamed. That was interesting! She exchanged a look with her friends and sat up straight, ready to take some notes.

Unfortunately most of the lecture was about the reasons for teaching this, instead of really teaching them any spells. The professor also told them that it would be a mostly theoretic year. That was a bummer. Still, the Knee-reversal jinx sounded kind of interesting, she wanted to try it out.

Rory was hugely not thrilled to be stuck in a classroom with Professor Styx again. Every time his eyes grazed over the class of students she felt like she was a bug pinned to one of those creepy boards that bug-people had. Trapped for an hour of no nonsense and no fun, it was Rory's worst nightmare. Particularly because she had the sneaking suspicion that she might actually enjoy Defence if it wasn't taught by Professor Gargoyle. See, prank jinxes - that was fun. Or it would be, if they actually had a chance of casting them. Hearing that this year would be mostly theoretical made Rory groan (inwardly, she was nowhere near brave enough to interrupt the professor with even the slightest noise while he was talking). She was sure she'd read, heard, seen, been told somewhere, she couldn't really remember - that practical application was the only way you could really learn something. It was just like boring professors to take all the fun parts out of their classes. Rory made sure to take a note of the homework before leaving at the end, already trying to calculate the minimum she would have to do to not make Professor Styx mad.

Another defense class, Alex was up for it. Parchment and quill in hand, he knew they wouldn't be doing spells any time soon. Bringing some fun into the class room would surely make Professor Styx burn alive.

He decided to keep his mouth shut when the first question was brought up. He didn't have any intention of standing out from the crowd.. Yet.

The knee-reversal jinx sounded useful to him. You never know when it might come in handy against bullies, as a self-protection jinx. That's another thought, jinxes for self-defense. Noting down the homework, he was ready to leave. He didn't want to spend any more time with this grump.
