]Professor Styx glanced up at the time and he realized that it was, once again, time for the first years to return to their lessons, and this time, he had to teach them. This lesson was about a certain someone that he knew all about - even met once or twice. Professor Styx was in fact a Death Eater a long time ago, but has left since the Dark Lord's fall. He was doing his job though, as a professor for the time being. And it suited him. He took role mentally, and he stood up to begin the lesson once more. His onyx eyes washed over the expressions the first years had. They were not going to enjoy this lesson, however it was full of information that they would need. He began, "The Dark Arts are not to be meddled with, and most of you have thought, well why not? The question will be answered this class period. We will learn the consequences of the Dark Arts, and also of someone who had meddled with them a little too much."

The emotions on his face were stone-like, and unreadable. He continued, "Notes will be required as well for this lesson, and I will not slow down on this lecture. You all should know that the punishment for performing Dark Arts is Azkaban, which is the wizarding prison guarded by Dementors in cause some of you are unfamiliar with the wizarding world." Professor Styx paused for a moment, to ensure that everyone was taking in the information that he was giving them. "If some of you think that you would not get caught, then it is untrue as the signs are inevitable." Professor Styx flourished his wand and he tapped the blackboard behind him and an image appeared.

Professor Styx saw that some if not all of the students were confused on who this Slytherin student was. He continued on, "This is a former Hogwarts student named Tom Marvolo Riddle Jr.. He is a mass murderer, torturer and also an abuser of the Dark Arts. He is seventeen here, and he had been practicing the Dark Arts for a while during this time. As you can see, he looked somewhat normal. He had little to no friends at all, and distanced everyone from him." Professor Styx watched as the other students seemed to be taking notes. "You should remember this as what your parents and grandparents would describe him as." He tapped the board again and another image appeared.

Several students gasped as the picture went through their little minds. "This would be Lord Voldemort, a self given name, and he had once tried to take over the wizarding world and purge it of all the muggles, muggle-borns and blood traitors alike. He had gone further than anyone of using the Dark Arts, even of some of which that we would not dare name. Using the Dark Arts like this will take a huge toll on your appearance, your personality and your soul. The Dark Arts will tear you away from your loved ones and those that love you." Professor Styx tapped the board again and the picture melted off of the board, and replaced with the homework assignment.

Though he went over the words that he thought and shook his head. He instead wrapped up the lesson and continued, "The assignment is an essay on the Dark Arts and the effects on the caster. You are to have it ready by the next time you set foot in here. Class is dismissed." Professor Styx crossed over and sat behind the desk, the doors opening to allow the students to leave the classroom.

stop staring ... I had spattergroit, ok!

Minerva had survived the first one, the first DADA class that was but she wasn't so sure it was going to be that easy all the time. She entered the classroom and took a seat, smiling to those she knew but keeping her head down so that she didn't draw attention to herself. The professor thankfully just got on with the lesson which was fascinating to say the least. Minerva was delighted that the consequences of using the dark arts was being taken seriously by the professor and that he was imparting his wisdom to the students. She took out her quill, ink pot and parchment and began to take the notes she knew she would need for studying later on.

notes

Dark Arts - Consequences
Azkaban
Tom Marvolo Riddle Jnr - mass murderer | dark arts abuser
by 17 years old - no friends, distanced himself

Minerva paused in writing her notes, she had two good friends now ... but only a short time ago she had no one at all, did being friendless have something to do with people becoming seduced by the dark arts? It was something she felt she had to understand more and giving her attention over to the professor she watched as a second image appeared on the board. She couldn't help but gasp, she wasn't sure what sort of being it was and was horrified to discover that this was in fact the Lord Voldemort. Her parents had never spoken of him, he was before their time and another hemisphere away entirely but he was in quite a few history books but she had never imagined he could look so ... horrendous! Is that what the dark arts did to a person? She continued taking notes until it was time to go and then she wrote the homework assignment down too before leaving the classroom with the other students.

Defence Against the Dark Arts Lesson 2

The Dark Arts is a form of magic that relies heavily on the intent of the castor rather than the magic itself. If we take the example of immortality and look at it from the perspective of Lord Voldemort and Nicolas Flimmel, they both approached it from different ways. One used the philosophers stone which was the use of alchemy in light magic, while the other used the splitting of his soul by mass murder to create horcruxes the most dark and evil of acts.

The Dark arts can be in the form of curses, jinxes, hexes, objects, potions, dark creatures such as dementors , lethifold, basilisks and inferi among others. The dark arts are considered to be continuously changing and indestructible, the over use of the dark arts leads to an irreversible toll upon your very soul, appearance and personality.

Phoebe was very interested in the Dark Arts, not because she wanted to hurt others, but because she felt like any type of magic had its uses and could have a different puprose than had been originally intended. She got that a professor of Defence Against the Dark Arts could hardly talk about its uses, though, so she planned to do a little extra research on her own later.

She took out her parchment and quill and got started on her notes. As she took notes on the information, she also added in any questions she had and wanted to look up later. The punishment for Dark Arts seemed kind of harsh, she wondered if it was the same no matter which type of Dark Arts you did. The image he showed as of a boy, and Phoebe wasn't very interested until he told them his name. Oh! She sat up slightly and didn't gasp at the new image because she had expected it. She wrote down some of the effects the professor mentioned and then finally noted down the homework. She left the classroom when the doors opened.

Sophie was looking forward to a nice, quiet class. The others only seemed to behave the way they should when they had a strict teacher like Professor Styx. And Phoebe Holland wouldn't get to show off as much as she did during Charms last week. Hopefully.

Sophie took her seat and took out parchment and quill, ready to take notes to prepare for the exam. She didn't recognize the boy in the picture and didn't really get why Professor Styx was showing them some boy. Her eyebrows raised slightly when it was revealed who he was. The professor really had wantedto shock them with that change, huh? Sophie had been surprised, but she was pretty good at keeping her emotions in check. She gave some of the people that had gasped dramatically a dirty look, that was so unnecessary.

It made complete sense to her that meddling in the Dark Arts would have consequences for your body and health. But surely only idiots would even consider doing something like that. They were literally called DARK. That was a warning sign to anyone.

She wrote down the homework assignment and packed up her things. She was one of the last people to leave the classroom. She wasn't in as big of a hurry to get out of here as some other people seemed to be.

April wondered if any students had ever tried to cheer Professor Styx up. He seemed so grumpy all the time and that couldn't be good for his health. She wondered if she could do something, but she wasn't sure. For now she just gave him a sunny smile before taking her seat. The Dark Arts sounded very serious and scary, and she didn't think she would ever be tempted to try it. It was a sure way to get locked in prison, and she couldn't do any of the things she wanted there. Her father had given her the lecture on how dangerous it was already, so she hoped the professor would show them something new so she wouldn't be bored for the whole class.

He showed them some Slytherin boy that didn't look familiar to her. She was surprised when it turned out to be Lord Voldemort. Who knew he had once looked normal? His later appearance was so creepy! She took some notes about what would happen if you used the dark arts, but she didn't really linger on it. Only bad people would even want to use them, right?

She wrote down the homework and waved at Professor Styx before leaving the classroom with some other Hufflepuffs.

Elly yawned and wasn't happy she was about to have Defense against the Dark Arts. The Professor was so grumpy and generally moody. Today was the second lesson of Defense against the dark arts and Elly wasn't sure if she liked the classes or not. The Professor knew what he was doing and he definitely fit the theme. The classroom was big and Elly sat down. She took her paper and pen and started writing. Elly was so excited to have this class with both Geo and Minerva. It was like she had this class with her two best friends. Sophie and Phoebe were here too so that was awesome as well.

The class was interesting and Elizabeth was learning something new at least. In her astronomy classes she already knew everything and the lessons were dull. At least these classes were fresh and new matter. When the class ended Elly made the homework and left for the library.

Defence Against the Dark Arts Lesson 2

The dark arts are a branch of magic that is frowned upon, but not illegal. Some spells and jinxes of the Dark Arts are prohibited from use and can land you into magical prison. Dark Magic refers to a jinx/hex or curse that affects the victim in a negative way. A curse is the worst part of Dark magic were as a jinx is a more of a light form of Dark Arts.

Pursuing a carrier in the dark arts can have an effect on your personality and soul. If used regularly it alters your appearance. The Dark Arts rely on the intent of the caster rather than the intent of magic. If you want to use a curse on someone you really have to want it, otherwise it won't work.

Veronica was rather subdued as she entered the Defence classroom for her second lesson. As usual, she had done some reading ahead and... well... it seemed that there was at least one subject in the world that didn't seem to raise her enthusiasm very highly. Nevertheless, Veronica was ready and waiting with her quill for Professor Styx to begin - she still wanted to do the best she could in this class after all. The beginning of the lecture wasn't auspicious, however, and as it went on Veronica found herself wishing she didn't have to hear about these sorts of things. She'd never looked up any information about He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named on her own, though she had heard of who he was, of course. Although diligently taking notes, her engagement with them was much less enthusiastic than usual and once the lesson was finished Veronica was as eager to leave the classroom as any of the other students.

Defence Against the Dark Arts, Lesson Two

The Dark Arts are those types of magic that are used with intent to cause harm to others, and most branches of magic have some content that is considered 'dark.' Spells and potions are the most common way a user can affect others, and objects, people, and beings are all able to have the Dark Arts performed upon them. This magic is considered unacceptable by most wizarding societies, as seen by Ministry reactions to its discovery. The Dark Arts also can be said to 'punish' users itself, however, an example of which is Tom Riddle Jr, who was later widely referred to as 'He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.' Wishing harm and pain on others is a terrible thing to do, and so your own self becomes darkened by such intentions - is it widely accepted that the more someone performs the Dark Arts, the more they become corrupted by its influence. This mostly affects the personality and soul, but can also cause irreversible impact to your outward appearance, though this is likely only in the most severe cases.
