Professor Kaibryn felt she was settling in alright at the school, it was completely different to Scotland in that there were more international students here and that meant the accents were wide and varied and therefore the students themselves were so vastly different too. It wasn't just different background but different cultures and traditions, she found the students she had so far met to be interesting and vital and many still had a genuine taste for learning which she couldn't help but respond to. Invigorated by their enthusiasm she had brought along a training kit and had the classroom organised before the students entered so that all the desks and chairs were back against the wall and in the middle of the classroom were miniature inflatable manikins, she removed each from its bag and pressing a small button on each side let them inflate naturally. They were organised in a semi-circle so that the students would be able to work on theirs while being able to see how it was done first from her own one which was directly at the front of the semi-circle. She was kneeling before her own manikin when the students entered and with a smile she indicated for them all to take a place before each of the inflated items. "Hello and welcome to today's class ... last week in your hand-outs you would have seen the letters CPR, those letters stand for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. It's a bit of a mouthful that's why it's more commonly known as CPR. What it is used for is to revive a person who has stopped breathing or whose heart has stopped beating. Many muggles today are trained in this from adults to students like yourselves, it saves lives. Unless you're going to go on to be a healer, you probably will only learn a rudimentary small healing charm that is effective for cuts and bruises but not for anything more serious ... so you will have this at least to fall back on" she paused for a moment before indicating the manikin before them all. "This is an inflatable manikin and your learning aid, you will all get to keep this so you can practice on it as it will be part of your exam at the end of the term. For those that pass their CPR exam, you will get a certificate to say you are trained in it, you might not think so now ... but knowing CPR does and can save lives!" Again she paused before she looked at each of them, "Alright ... there is no need to take notes today, I have comprehensive hand-outs for you to take away with you. Today I want you to concentrate completely on actively participating and listening. There are three main steps in CPR, they're known as A-B-C ... or A - check the airways, B - do rescue breathing and C - do chest compressions!" Faida spoke clearly to the students, "Always start with checking the person's airways. The person's breathing might be faint and shallow so you have to do three things ... Look, Listen and Feel for any signs of breathing. Something is possibly blocking the person's airway if they aren't breathing and it's often times the tongue that is at fault. Make sure that the person is lying on their back," with each instruction that she gave them she demonstrated with the use of the manikin before her, "place your hand on the forehead and your other under the tip of the chin like this, then gently tilt the person's head backwards...by doing this the tongue should shift from the back of the throat and no longer be an obstruction" practice that for the next five minutes please, the professor stood up once again going to each of the student's to watch them and again give any necessary instruction and encouragement before returning to her place again. "If however the person is still not able to breathe ...even after clearing the airway" she looked at each of the student's one by one, "You will have to assist the person in breathing!" "This time you gently support the person's chin to keep it lifted up and the person's head tilted back, you then proceed to pinch the nose with your fingers tips like this" Professor Kaibryn demonstrated this before continuing, "this prevents air from escaping when you begin your ventilating. You place your mouth over the theirs and create a tight seal, keep your own head positioned so that you can see their chest, don't over inflate the lungs as this could cause the person to vomit but if that does happen, be sure to turn the person's head to the side and then carefully remove any new obstructions out of the mouth before you continue" she demonstrated all she said first before continuing, "then give two...full breaths, between each breath give the person's lungs time to relax, so place your ear close to his mouth and listen carefully for any air escaping while watching the chest to see if it falls when the person exhales." She instructed for them to practice this before the class resumed with the next part of the lesson. "If you're lucky, the person will hopefully have begun breathing, coughing or moving at this point but if they haven't ... then you have to check their circulation. Now I want you to turn to the person beside you and with these two fingers" she indicated her index and middle finger, "I want you to place them on what is known as the carotid artery - that is to the side of the windpipe. You will feel a pulse there, look at your watch and count the number of beats in 10 seconds, you then multiply that number by 6 to get your heart rate per minute. A normal resting rate should be between 60 and 100" she allowed them to check for a pulse first in the student beside them and then asked them to check for their own pulse so that they could become used to finding it before then continuing the lesson. "So you check the person's circulation and if you cannot find a pulse ... you begin compressions. In order to do this right you need to do the compressions in the right place, so" she demonstrated to the class by placing two fingers at the spot where the lower ribs met then put the heel of her other hand next to her two fingers, "can you all do that please!" She moved between them making sure that they all found the correct hand placement before continuing. "Ok, I want you to place one hand on top of the other, interlace your fingers, lock your elbows at your side and using your own body weight, compress on the chest. If you feel or hear any cracking sound then release the pressure but do not stop. Count aloud to help keep your focus, compress 15 times at a rate of 3 compressions every 2 seconds, then do two breaths ... so try it now... 15 compressions and 2 breaths" she stood again to go between the student's correcting any thing that needed it and encouraging them as they went along, "remember to check for a pulse and any signs of consciousness as you continue" She allowed them to continue practicing before glancing at her own watch, she ran a hand through her hair where had the time gone? "Alright class, you can finish up now. Just deflate the manikin like this" she depressed on the circular button near the ear and the inflated manikin deflated rapidly, "just fold it neatly put it into it's bag and bring it away with you. There are hand-outs on the desk near the door, be sure to take them on your way out please and practice as much as you possibly can. Thank you" she smiled encouragingly at them as they left. ---------------------------------------- rp the lesson - a simple attendance post this week will only receive an A roleplaying the actual lesson will get full marks for extra credit - rp a practice session on school grounds with the manikin and link it in your post. handouts this week can simply be rp'd as being there but for any additional notes please view the reference link thank you ---------------------------------------- References: Muggle Studies,4,2

Lilyanna quite enjoyed Muggle studies. Muggles were very smart individuals and she couldn't wait to learn something new again this lesson. She arrived to the class on time and sat at the front of the room. The professor was right that whatever CPR stood for was a mouthful and was glad that she didn't have to say it like that if she didn't want to. She watched intently as the professor practiced CPR on the inflatable mannequin and tried to remember everything she did for when it was her turn to do it. When it was, Lilyanna situated herself beside the mannequin on the floor and began to look, listen and feel to see if it was breathing. Obviously, it wasn't, and so she then proceeded to slowly tilt its head backwards, even though it didn't have a tongue. The fourth year felt quite stupid doing it but if this was a real life situation she'd have to know what to do. When they were told to start compressions on the mannequin, Lilyanna did so, placing her hands on top of each other on the mannequin's chest. The counting reminded her of the practice that Andrew told her to do, except it wasn't so intense, and so she was quite good at it when it came down to it. Once she and the rest of the class was done, she deflated her mannequin like instructed and thanked the professor before leaving the classroom at the end of the lesson. |
