Faida Kaibryn waited for the students to enter and take their seats before she stood from behind her desk and addressed them.

"I am your substitute professor for this term, you can address me as Professor Kaibryn" her English accent was distinct, moving to the front of the desk she slowly paced back and forth speaking to the students.

"A lot of wizarding history interconnects with muggle history, just like quite a bit of muggle history has impacted upon the magical world what we will be learning about today however is muggle-borns, these incredible people who have one foot in the wizarding world and another in the muggle world and who have to make a choice. However ..." she paused and looked up to see if they were even paying attention, "during the second wizarding war - muggle borns had no choices, they had no rights, they were not even allowed a wand. They were displaced, accused of stealing magic, accused of stealing wands. Many were locked up in Azkaban, children, women, men ... all innocent people - incarcerated for simply being a muggle-born."

Faida leaned against the edge of her desk as she continued, "Muggle born records were completely wiped out by Voldemort and he then set about appointing the Muggle-born Registration committee. Muggle-borns had to by law sign the register, they were interviewed and I use that word loosely ... they were interrogated ... as to how they got a wand, who they took their magic from and then were either thrown into Azkaban or left for homeless. Many tried to flee the country but thousands didn't, couldn't ... and yet their story is not one you are likely to see in the newspapers or magazines - it doesn't sell! One of the most profound books of our time is My Wand - My Magic, the Memoirs of an Azkaban survivor and yet barely fifty of these books were bought. This is a turning point in the history of the wizarding world and yet it is not something that is even taught in history of magic ... I know this because I also taught that subject back in England. It is a stain on the world ... a period of history that many want to pretend has never happened and others forget it ever occurred."
She turned and picked up a few items before dispersing them about the class.

"These are a few of the newspapers of that time, a wand application ... Muggle-borns could not just go into Ollivanders to purchase a wand any more, they first had to apply for one and of course, were always turned down! There is also a muggle registration form. I want you all to look at these carefully, try to understand what it must have been like to have that level of hatred and prejudice directed at you. When you are finished looking through them just leave them on the desks I will collect them but for your homework assignment, I want you all to write a diary ... a memoir ... I want you over the next few weeks to find someone at the school who is muggle born and get to know them, really to know them. Write about the differences between you, things that are the same if any, their likes and dislikes, their hopes and aspirations for the future ... This homework assignment will cover the next few weeks but ... I want to see proof each week that you are doing the assignment. You are dismissed."
Faida returned to her desk and sat down waiting for them all to leave before summoning the newspapers and forms to her and folding them carefully before putting them back in their protective covers.
