Do More of What Makes You Awesome!
[ * ]
Faida Kaibryn had gone traveling for a year or maybe more, she was still undecided as to the duration as yet but she had taken a sabbatical from her teaching career, wanting to see whether or not she really wanted to spend the rest of her life teaching students who had no interest in learning or at the most, a rudimentary interest. She had only been in New Zealand all of four weeks but in the time she had continuously heard amazing things about the magic school here also called Hogwarts. It seemed then fate stepped in and gave her an opportunity to see what it would be like to teach on the other side of the world and to see if student's lack of interest was a universal thing or not - an advert for a muggle studies professor - a temporary position- came her way and she could not help but answer it.

She stood now in the classroom and greeted the students that entered with a small smile as she leaned against the front of the desk. She wore all black but even with her professor's robes on her tattoos were visible at her neck and on her hands.

"Welcome, I am your professor for this semester - I'm only a substitute so we won't need to bond and get to know one another's life stories, that means no essay on what you did for your vacation" she gave a light chuckle before continuing, "My name is Professor Kaibyrn, muggle schools are infamous for always setting essays on what you did during your holidays but you're going to have enough assignments to get through this semester without me adding daft ones to it. What I want to begin with is a few simple rules ... pay attention, be respectful ... of me and one another and for the subject. Most people think muggle studies is an easy grade well ... not the way I teach it - you earn every point or none at all. Contrary to popular belief muggles are not lazy - there are a lot of entrepreneurs, go getters and trail blazers in so many different fields. The specific field we will be discussing today is important not only in the muggle world but for those in the muggle world that can't perform any healing magic."

She stood up and turned to remove items from two boxes on her desk. Jotters, pencils and a pencil sharpener with plastic padding that included an eraser at the other end of it. Walking between the desks she placed one of each down before each student.

"These are what you will take notes with this semester, nothing else. These ..." she held up the combined eraser and sharpener, "are for rubbing out any mistakes you make and this end ..." she pointed to the small hole in the top and inserted a pencil into it and turned it a few times, "is how you sharpen it when the nib wears down ...now ... today's lesson is an introduction to First Aid!"

Faida slid her hands into the pockets of her trousers as she leaned on the front of the desk once again, "this country is one of the healthiest in the entire world by muggle standards, completely different by wizarding standards but here the most in the way of environmental hazards runs to drowning or hypothermia. There aren't any dangerous animals or snakes that can eat, bite or sting you but ... in New Zealand there are extremely strong winds and many mountain ranges and ... these produce what is known as a chill factor... it causes a severe sudden dip in temperature especially during the winter months. The wizarding community aren't affected by this because we'd just perform a heating charm but muggles can't do that and students under the age of seventeen can't either, so what to do if stranded on a mountain trek or when there's a sudden drop in temperature and you recognise the early signs of hypothermia?"

She wasn't expecting an answer but paused momentarily before continuing, "first of all you have to get to a warm place as soon as you possibly can, remove the wet clothing but be careful doing so, wrap up in as many warm layers as possible. If there are warm drinks or some kind of energy foods eat them, drink them but do not let anyone give you alcohol, this does not help! Be sure to ask them to cough first just to check that they can actually swallow. Encourage them to shiver or if it's yourself ... do your best to shiver, it helps circulation. When you need to worry is when the shivering stops. I'll pass around a hand-out at the end of class with a list of the early signs and what to do in the event of, on it."

Faida tapped a small stack of papers on her desk as she looked at the students before her.
"That brings me on to the other high priority risk factor ... drowning. There was a time in New Zealand where just about every muggle Kiwi could swim then about 2010 or thereabouts it was discovered that more people in New Zealand drowned than in places like England. So a big debate circulated as to who should be teaching children to swim and funding for it and so on, they had estimated in 2011 that by 2030 over 180 muggles would drown a year!"[1]
She let that sink in a moment before continuing, "Now ... try to estimate how many of the wizarding community can swim? Far fewer than the muggle community and that's fine if you can brandish your wand and rescue yourself but what if you are underage and can't use a wand and accidentally fall in to a lake or the ocean? ... well, consider yourself another statistic!"

Glancing at her watch she was surprised that the end of the lesson was upon them already and so clapped her hands together twice calling the students to attention.

"The next lesson is going to be a follow up from this one ... remember to take one of these before you go, class dismissed."

Abigail Carter was not looking forward to this semester of Muggle Studies at all. The class was boring, the subject matter sucked, and she was more than certain that there was a whole lot more stupid things for them to learn. She begrudgingly took a seat and accepted the stupid muggle writing utensils from the professor before she began to explain the lesson to them of which she only really half listened too. This was not going to be something that she would enjoy so she took the bare minimum amount of notes that she had too and then left the classroom when they were all dismissed.

[justify]The recent headache with Lennon aside the ravenclaw was feeling pretty good about what she was facing in this semester. She had done well in the last one, and knew she could do just as well if not better in this one too. Though there was little way to go up from where she was. Sianna did have more on her plate during this semester, though most of the large school events were done there were still a few left and then there was the oh so simple method of picking the pictures to use, and it took a while, Sianna took a lot of pictures, she knew it was better to have too many than too few. The teen was getting ready for the day, she had finished her own little schedule, and she was trying her best to find a place for all of the things she had to do. It was working out just fine, a few things needed moved around but that was about it. Everything else was fine. She was getting ready for the day, brushing her hair carefully, putting it up in a ponytail and then gathering the right books for the lessons that she had that day.

Sianna arrived at the muggle studies classroom and looked to this new professor at the front of the room. She liked the look of the professor, not entirely sure why and was pretty interested in what they might be learning. The fourth year pulled out her books as the professor began the lesson. She was surprised that the professor didn't introduce herself, or that they wouldn't be either. She was rather happy about that fact even, it was a nice break from other professors. She kept her focus on what she was saying, the little information about muggles that felt unnecessary given that this was fourth year not third year, but each to their own teaching style she assumed. The fact they were doing healing, but non-magical healing was also pretty interesting. She looked at the box that was placed in front of her, and wasn't too surprised at it, they'd always been instructed to use muggle utensils in this class, these were just a specific set of them. She began using them as the professor began her lesson, taking about first aid. It was a fairly involved lesson, with so much for them to learn, Sianna's hand began cramping as the lesson progressed and she wrote more and more down. The girl was so happy to be learning about all this. She wasn't sure she'd ever need it, given that she could do magic, but it didn't make it any less useful. Eventually the lesson came to an end, and she took the time before leaving to review the notes she had taken. She compared them to the handouts and smiled to herself as she placed them within the rest of her muggle studies notes before packing up and leaving the room.

Lilyanna was very glad to be back at school. She had missed going to classes and learning new things and was quite proud of herself for the grades she managed to get last semester. Most of the classes she had to do this semester she wasn't very good at but she hoped that, with the help of Andrew and Daniel, she'd be able to get through them. Luckily, her next class was muggle-studies which was one of her favourite. She made her way there by herself and sat in her usual seat at the front of the room. Unfortunately, the professor had been replaced by someone else but luckily they weren't going to be there forever. With a small sigh of relief, Lilyanna sat quietly in her seat as she took notes. She already knew what an eraser, pencil and sharpener did and so didn't bother writing anything down about that. Instead, she wrote as many notes down as she could about First Aid. Not being able to use magic did have its consequences, but Lilyanna thought that the way they were able to handle such situations was intriguing. By the end of the lesson she had left with a good amount of notes and headed straight to her next class.

Notes

  • Strong winds produce a chill factor which causes a severe sudden drop in temperature, especially during winter.
  • If you think you have hypothermia, try to stay warm and remove any wet clothing.
  • If you can cough, it means you can swallow.
  • Do not drink any alcohol and try to shiver if you think you have hypothermia.
  • In around 2010 it was discovered that more people drowned in New Zealand than in England.
