Professor Kalif Styx
Member Avatar
Patriarch of the Zhefarovich Family, Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor, Slytherin Head of House, Former Death Eater, Legilimens, Occlumens

Professor Kalif Styx entered the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom, dark robes flowing behind him and his dark, onyx eyes flowing with little to no emotion at all. His eyes wondered around the classroom, before he pointed at the windows with his gloved finger, and shades lowered down to make it seem even darker in the classroom. And now, his eyes roamed down to the time turner, and saw that he was going to have to teach first years today. They were the youngest group of students in the classroom, just eleven or twelve-years-old. This would be one long day for him. Once everyone walked into the classroom, Professor Styx was standing in front of the classroom, with the blackboard behind him, and a sour look on his cruel, stone-like face. Professor Styx watched as everyone sat down in their seats, however if anyone made any sort of sounds or disturbances while he was teaching this important subject, he would ensure that they would not have a good time in his class.

After everyone was seated and silenced. Professor Styx waved his hand at the door and it slammed shut. His tone was sharp and cold, and he started the lesson, "Welcome to your first year of Defence Against the Dark Arts class. My name is Professor Kalif Styx, and will be referred to as Professor Styx. I am also the Slytherin Head of House. Most of you seem like you are excited to be learning this class however, I would not hold that excitement in for too long. This class will have essays as well as practical magic. In this class, you will learn exactly what the Dark Arts are, and how you will defend yourself against them." Professor Styx paused for a moment, and he narrowed his eyes at the students. He did not know exactly what they were thinking that this class was, but it was not going to be easy. "I would advise taking out your parchment, ink and quills, because notes are required as well in this course. I will go over the rules in this class, and you will have to remember that these rules are to be followed, no matter what." Professor Styx paused for a moment, to wait to see if everyone had done that, and once they had, Professor Styx leaned against the desk that was in front of the room to go over the rules and guidelines of the class.

"The rules are simple. One, respect of the peers and professor is required. Another is no talking while I am talking as that is a sign of disrespect, so if you have a question, raise your hand. Thirdly, we have the rule where we will be practicing spells in class, so practice only the spells that I tell you do to. Fourthly, have your parchment, ink and quill with you every day as well as your wands. You will not know when we will be practicing nor will you know when we will be lecturing. Lastly, all homework is to be turned in on the due date." Once everyone was done writing down the rules, it was time to get to the main part of the lesson. Professor Styx continued, "Now, who can tell me what the Dark Arts are?" Hands shot up into the air, but Professor Styx nodded to one single student to answer the question. The student was right, and he nodded once more to tell the student that they were correct. "Now, what I want you to do is write down a question if you have one about anything for the class, and I will do my best to answer it. This is an easy homework assignment so there would be no excuse for you not to do this. Class is dismissed." Professor Styx waved his hand and the door opened. He went back to behind his desk to finish up any other work that he had to finish up.

Assignment: Roleplay the lesson and do the assignment. Take some notes as well. Before replying to this for your lesson, be sure to read the class rules.

Elijah Zelinsky was back at school for the second semester after enjoying the holidays with his family. It was a whole different world out there now that he had spent such a long time in the school and so he was glad to be back here now. He took a seat in the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom and he smiled at Professor Styx on his way in. He had heard a lot of stories about the man from the other people at the school but he didn't believe most of them. He couldn't be as bad as they said. He listened to the professor as he introduced himself and then explained the rules that they were going to have to follow throughout the semester. He wrote down the question for his homework and then left the classroom with the others. He had a feeling he would like this class.

Sophia Jackson had been looking forward to Defence Against the Dark Arts the most out of all of her subjects. It was the most intriguing and held the most interesting subject matter of all of the other classes that they attended. The young metamorphmagus took a seat in the classroom and got out her writing equipment straight away, knowing that the professor had a reputation in the school for being extremely strict and she didn't want to give any kind of reason for him to yell at her. She listened to the professor as he spoke about the different rules of his classroom and she wrote down a question when the professor told them their homework. She then packed up when they were dismissed and then left the classroom.

Somehow Defense against the Dark Arts wasn't a class Elly was rooting for. I mean she was going to her utter most best, but the Professor just gave off this moody vibe. Elly took a seat close to Minerva, they had shared their opinions about this class. At least his classes weren't boring, Professor Styx knew his subject and talked about it with knowledge in his voice. Elly took paper and a pen, she didn't like writing with a quill. She is a lefty and ink would be smeared everywhere even Professor Styx wouldn't appreciate that. When Professor Styx asked a question her hand shot up and somehow she got picked. ''The Dark Arts are a form of dark magic which is used to harm or hurt others.'' Elly muttered quiet shyly, I mean Professor Styx looked like a scary man.

She was so happy that she wasn't sorted in Slytherin, those people were used to him by now. Elly didn't know what question she wanted to ask. So she wrote one down that she really was thinking about. When she reread what she had written she got scarred, what if she got expelled for this. She scratched it out with a line and wrote a new question.

stop staring ... I had spattergroit, ok!

Minerva Khulik had dreaded this class more than any other, she had heard some stories about this professor and though logic told her not to believe everything she heard, she also knew there was no smoke without fire. She entered the class and sat in what she thought would be close enough to hear the professor and note anything from the board and to see any demonstrations but not so close as to be right under the professors nose. She certainly didn't want to be picked for anything in this class.

She held the place beside her waiting for Elly to show up and felt a wave of relief when she did. She gave her a feeble smile, too nervous to say anything in case the professor did something outrageous like hex her or jinx her. When he began to speak Minerva felt her entire insides quiver but soon calmed down when he began talking about the class rules. Instantly her quill was dipping into the ink pot and scratching over the parchment in her haste to jot it all down. As far as Minerva was concerned, a good class had to have rules or it descended into anarchy!

DADA Class Rules

1. Respect - peers and professor
2. No talking - if you have a question, raise your hand
3. Practice only the spells that Professor Styx gives
4. Always have your parchment, ink and quill with you every day as well as your wands
5. All homework is to be turned in on the due date

When Professor Styx asked a question, Minerva took time to consider whether or not she should put her hand up. She felt still anxious and wasn't sure she should even though many other hands had flown up, Elly's as well. Minerva felt like a complete idiot for not raising hers then, the professor might assume that she knew absolutely nothing and that hesitation cost her points for her house. She was glad however that it was Elly who was chosen and gave the right answer and beamed at her as a result before giving her attention back to the stern looking man at the top of the class. The homework assignment he gave didn't seem all that bad really and as the class was dismissed, Minerva packed up and left with Elly.

Later in her dorm she set about her homework assignment and realised thinking of a question to ask the professor in relation to the Dark Arts was not as simple as she first thought it was. By the time she turned in for the night however, she was satisfied with her choice and was able to sleep soundly.

Although usually Veronica was excited for any class that she had the privilege of being able to take part in, she became quite subdued as she walked through the door to find an eerily dark classroom awaiting her. For just a second she entertained the idea that the professor might be making some sort of joke about the 'Dark' Arts - that was until she actually laid eyes on the man in question and felt a sudden chill ripple through her. He was not joking. He didn't even look as if he could laugh at a joke, and his grim seriousness made Veronica uneasy enough that she decided to take a seat a few rows back from the front of the room. Removing her writing instruments from her bag to busy herself while everyone else filed in, she soon had nothing to do but fidget as she waited for the lesson to start. She also avoided the professor's gaze while she waited, because she knew people often sensed when someone was watching them and she absolutely didn't want to make eye contact with the man, or be caught staring at him.

To her relief the class finally began, and Veronica picked up her quill in preparation for her usual voracious note-taking. To her disappointment, however, Professor Styx only went over the rules he expected them to follow - although she made sure to write every one of them down as exactly as possible, because she sensed that getting into trouble in this class could be a very unpleasant experience. Veronica didn't feel brave enough to raise her hand in an attempt at answering the question, but sent Elly an admiring look for doing so, even if the response seemed quieter than was usual for her dormmate. She finished the lesson with a quick question, which she had sort of wanted to expand upon but felt too nervous to do so when she knew Professor Styx would soon be reading it. As she left, Veronica absentmindedly noted that this was the first time she had ever felt better by heading out of a classroom, instead of coming in.

April had heard a lot of whispers about the Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. Most of them were bad and painted him in a very scary and negative light. April was optimistic though. People were probably just negative about a teacher they don't like, and a Professor shouldn't be a mean person.

She took her seat in the middle of the classroom, eager to get started. Hopefully they would learn a real good spell today so she could show it to her dad. She was quiet as she listened to the Professor's speech, though she did find it hard to focus while sitting still and being completely quiet. Professor Styx spent a lot of time going over the rules. April took a few notes but she was sure she missed a few rules. At the end of the lesson, she wrote down a quick question for him.

Phoebe was interested in all her lessons, but Defence was something she wasn't entirely sure about yet. Sure, learning to defend yourself was important, but it didn't feel quite as interesting to her as potions or Charms. It was less innovative with less room for experimenting, at least if she had the right idea about the subject.

The mood in the classroom was grim as she entered, everyone was quiet and the professor was looking quite scary. Phoebe still wanted to take a seat near the front of the class, but Veronica sat a few rows back. That wasn't like her, and Phoebe wondered if she was scared of this professor. She sat next to her friend and gave her a smile. Styx might be intimidating, but he was just a professor.

A whole lesson just to go over rules seemed like such a waste to Phoebe. They could all read the rules themselves, right? Was he that scared of them breaking them? She took notes as always but knew this wasn't going to be of any use to her during the exam. She was glad that the homework was to ask a question, because she had one.

Why do we have a lesson just about the rules? Isn't there enough material to teach us?

Sophie was glad to be having Defence Against the Dark Arts this semester. It was one of the more useful classes, hopefully, and she wished she'd had it in her first semester. Professor Styx had a big reputation, and Sophie was almost glad that he lived up to it. Seeing some of her usual loud classmates all cowed and nervous was nearly enough to make her crack a smile. It would be good for a lot of them not to be coddled for once.

Sophie took her seat near the back and took out her notepad. She scribbled down the rules as Professor Styx said them. It was always good to know what not to do, though most of these were pretty self-explanatory. Elly answered the question about the Dark Arts, and Sophie was glad for the few house points it might get them. She didn't like answering questions in class, but she liked winning. Unfortunately, the Ravenclaws were pretty far behind, but at least they weren't Gryffindor. The homework was easy, though Sophie didn't really have anything she was too curious about. She'd make something up on the spot.

[justify]The young hufflepuff had been over the moon by the end of the first semester, his first semester at Hogwarts had been the GREATEST ever! The young boy had so many experiences that he’d been telling anyone who was willing to listen to them, above all of that, he was rather eager to just spend more time with the friends he’d made over the semester. Spend more time with April, or with Min, spend time with Gilly’s friend, or even just be pranked or finally get his revenge on the older gryffindor boys. He wasn’t much of a prankster really, giggles and laughter would take over him and he’d always give it away but just to get those two back he would just try. There was a lot he was looking forward to in this second semester and he was excited for the different adventures that it might bring him. Nortie knew he would have them too, he just knew he would have them and they would be great fun, the fun adventures with magic could never end. The boy was getting ready for the day, putting his books into his bag and then heading to the classroom.

Norton had heard such things about the professor of Defence against the dark arts, he had heard so much. The boy felt almost a little nervous about seeing and having to interact with the man having heard so much about him. However, he was looking forward to the class, doing the magic and everything that would come with learning. The boy bounced into the room and spotted the man instantly, he was certainly intimidating, an imposing force. The boy smiled at him as he walked past and made his way to his seat. Of course the man wouldn't enjoy the smile, but Nortie had Gilly and knew she wasn't always as grumpy, and of course he thought it never hurt to be polite. He also smiled at Min as he passed and made his way to sit with April since she appeared to be alone. The boy looked to the front once he took his seat and waited for the class to get started, which it did as soon as everyone had arrived. The boy was rather eager, but he was certainly bored by the prospect of having to right down the rules that the professor was talking about, of course he knew how to be in a class, Norton made small attempts at writing notes but he was too eager to do spells, his leg bounced under the table in poorly contained excitement that as it turned out would not be going away, since they wouldn't be doing any magic in this first lesson. Norton knew he should've expected that, but he hadn't really, he'd HOPED for ANYTHING else. The boy was given a sheet of paper and he quickly filled it out before handing it into the professor and leaving the room. As soon as he was out, he knew he needed to do something to let out all of his energy.
